Shirley Happel, 1947-2015

20150118-144531_ShirleyHappelFinalMrs. Shirley Ann Happel, 67, of LaPorte, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2015, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

She was born Oct. 27, 1947, in Michigan City, IN, to Arthur and Irene (Copeland) Michaels.

Shirley graduated from LaPorte High School and held a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business from Purdue North Central. She retired in 2009 from Nash-Finch as a deli and bakery buyer. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, LaPorte, and the Red Hats Society. Shirley loved gardening, cooking, camping, traveling, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

On June 25, 1966, in LaPorte, she married Barry Happel, who survives.

She is also survived by a son, Brian (Gwen) Happel of Quincy, IL; daughter, Kristine Happel of LaPorte; eight grandchildren, Jason (Lindsey) Hinkamper, Jessica (Skyler) Wiegmann, Jeremy Hinkamper, James Hinkamper, Julia Happel, Jacob Happel, Konnor DeWitt, and Grayson Happel; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Arthur Wayne Michaels and Mike Michaels, both of LaPorte; and sister, Linda Duckas of Fall Brook, CA.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Patricia Chism.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Wednesday, Jan. 21, from 4 to 8 p.m., and at Bethany Lutheran Church, LaPorte, on Thursday, Jan. 22, from 10 to 11 a.m. A life celebration will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the church with Rev. Dennis Meyer officiating. Interment will follow at Carmel Cemetery, LaPorte.
