Mrs. Gladys A. (Wilhelm) Schoof, 99, of Hamlet, IN, died Sunday, March 23, 2014, at Golden Living Center Fountainview, LaPorte.
She was born March 3, 1915, in Springfield Township, LaPorte County, to George and Augusta (Boettcher) Wilhelm.
Mrs. Schoof worked for the LaPorte Community School Corporation as a kitchen manager at Kingsford Heights Elementary School before her retirement. She was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, LaPorte. Gladys took great pride in her gardens and her home. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend. She leaves us with memories of her love of nature and her devotion to all.
On Nov. 24, 1932, she married Lawrence W. Schoof of New Tracy, IN, and lived there her entire life. He preceded her in death.
She was also preceded in death by one son, Melvin Schoof; two grandchildren, Gene Schoof and Pamela Schoof; four sisters, Dorothea Schoof, Emma Bradley, Louise Kievert and Leona Wilhelm; and four brothers, Earl Wilhelm, George Wilhelm, Irving Wilhelm and Leonard Wilhelm.
She is survived by two sons, Arnold (Dottie) Schoof and Larry (Liz) Schoof, both of Hamlet; daughter-in-law, Arlene Schoof of LaPorte; six grandchildren, Shelley (Mark) Cravens, Christine (Curt) Cable, Marc (Lisa) Schoof and Janet (Robert) Archer, all of LaPorte, Lois (Michael) Swanson of Rolling Prairie, IN, and Julie (Jeffrey) VanLiew of Brownsburg, IN; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Tuesday, March 25, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday, March 26, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. A life celebration will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Victor Frohne officiating. Interment will follow at Kingsbury Cemetery, Kingsbury, IN.
