Olive Mechling, 102, of LaPorte, died March 20, 2014, at Brentwood Assisted Living, LaPorte.
She was born Oct. 2, 1911, in Rolling Prairie, IN, to William H. and Bertha (Hastings) Hunt.
Olive was the last of the “Fabulous Hunt Sisters,” as the family called them, a group that included Nellie Barcus, Sarah Burden, Eva Hunt, Julia VanKosky and Wilma Jones. A fixture at Brentwood since 2000, she delighted in moving from table to table in the dining room, engaging each group in good-natured conversation. She was a favorite of staff and residents alike. Olive was a 1929 graduate of Rolling Prairie High School and a member of the First Baptist Church of LaPorte.
She was married to George R. Mechling for over 60 years, until his death in 1999. With no children of her own, she became a favorite aunt to three generations of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 26, at 6:30 p.m. at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte. The family asks that no flowers be sent, and that any donations be made to Wills Township Baptist Cemetery in Rolling Prairie.
