Phillip Hagenow, 1947-2015

He was born Jan. 17, 1947, in LaPorte to Edward C. and Elizabeth (Morton) Hagenow.

Phil attended Clinton Township High School and graduated from South Central High School and Purdue University. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Vietnam. His loves were his family and farming.

On Nov. 21, 1975, in Michigan City, IN, he married Sharon Malecki, who survives in Westville.

Also surviving are two daughters, Theresa (Glenn) Noll of LaGrange, IN, and Jane (Jim) Ranney of Lockport, IL; three sons, Stephen (Noelle) Hagenow and Andrew (Ashley Elcock) Hagenow, both of LaCrosse, IN, and Greg Hagenow of Westville; 11 grandchildren, Christina and Isabella Hurtado, Ethan and Claire Ranney, Caleb and Lucas Hagenow, and Elizabeth, Nathan, Kevin, Paul and Timothy Noll; sister, Elaine (Bob) Kohl of Brookings, SD; and three brothers, Jens (Betty) Hagenow of Westville and Paul (Audrey) Hagenow and Bob (Sally) Hagenow, both of LaPorte.

He was preceded in death by daughter, Ruth Anne Hagenow and son, Joseph Hagenow.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 6, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 202 N. Ohio St., Wanatah, IN, with Rev. Gerald Schweitzer officiating. Visitation will be held at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, on Friday, June 5, from 2 to 8 p.m., and at the church Saturday from 10 a.m. until the Mass. Full military services will be conducted Saturday in Westville Cemetery, Westville, IN.

Marcile Kermin, 1923-2015

kerminphotoMarcile Jane Kermin, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, 92, of LaPorte, died Tuesday, June 2, 2015.

She was born March 18, 1923, in LaPorte to William and Kathryn (Schweder) Wise.

Marcile retired from LaPorte Plastics as an inspector and had also been employed at the Athletic Shoe Company. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in LaPorte and its Rosary Sodality.

On June 16, 1945, in LaPorte, Marcile married Walter F. Kermin, who preceded her in death on Aug. 6, 1995.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Reginald Wise; and granddaughters, Sarah and Ashley Kazmierzak.

She leaves behind a daughter, Sharon Gaul, and a son, Thomas (Shellie) Kermin, both of LaPorte; four grandchildren, Rhonda Kazmierzak, John Gaul, Andrew Kermin and Christopher Kermin; three great-grandchildren, Matthew and Kaitlyn Kazmierzak and Timothy Gaul; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, on Thursday, June 4, from 4 to 8 p.m. with a Parish Rosary recitation at 5 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, June 5, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, LaPorte, where friends and family may gather at 9 a.m. Burial will follow the Mass in St. Joseph Cemetery, LaPorte.

David D. Osborn, 1926-2015

Osborn, David obit photoPrivate family services were held for David D. Osborn, 89, who died Monday, June 1, 2015, at IU Health LaPorte Hospital.

David was born Feb. 7, 1926, to Kenneth D. and Rachel (Martin) Osborn and was a lifelong resident of LaPorte.

David served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.  He served his community as an officer or director for the LaPorte Kiwanis Club, LaPorte Jaycees, Pine Lake Cemetery Board of Trustees, LaPorte Family YMCA, National Junior Chamber of Commerce, Ruth C. Sabin Home Board of Trustees, Meals on Wheels, and Unity Foundation, and was a founding member of the LaPorte County Mental Health Association. A graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, David practiced law until his retirement in 2010. David was a longtime member of the LaPorte County Election Board and the LaPorte Presbyterian Church and, along with his son, was a proud member of Chi Psi Fraternity.

On Sept. 21, 1957, in Ann Arbor, MI, he married Caryl Ann Stuhrberg, who survives along with daughter, Rebecca (Tom) Larson of LaPorte; son, D. Drummond (Suzanne) Osborn II of LaPorte; and grandchildren, Matthew (Maggie) Larson of Minneapolis, MN, Gregory (Kylie) Larson of Chicago, Michael (Kelsey) Osborn of Indianapolis, and Rachel and Emily Osborn of LaPorte.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Kenneth Jr., William and Thamas.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the LaPorte YMCA, LaPorte Hospital Foundation, LaPorte Kiwanis Club or to any community organization of the donor’s choice.

Roger Singleton, 1937-2015

Mr. Roger A. Singleton, 77, of LaPorte, died Friday, June 5, 2015, at Golden Living Center Fountainview, LaPorte.

He was born Dec. 22, 1937, in LaPorte to Russell L. and Goldie M. (Thorndyke) Singleton.

Roger graduated from LaPorte High School in 1957 and attended IU Bloomington in 1958. He was a member of the LaPorte Rotary Club. Roger held all offices within Masonic Lodge 41 F&A and was a Past Master Counselor, Order of De Molays. He participated in the following: Cub Scout Troop 390; Boy Scout Troop 39; LaPorte Jaycees from 1958-1972, holding the following positions – Regional V.P., Regional Director, Secretary of Indiana Jaycees, Ambassador of Exchange program in Jamaica; ancient accepted Scottish Rite – Valley of South Bend; and received the Sagamore of the Wabash from Gov./Dr. Otis Bowen. Roger served 20 years as a state employee, retiring in January 2005. He was a Scipio Township Advisory Board member and Scipio Township trustee. He was LaPorte County Republican Chairman from 05/1978-05/1998; in 1978 candidates in his party won 20 or 23 offices and had the first GOP sheriff of LaPorte County elected in 20 years. He helped in the election of U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar and U.S. Congressman John Hiler. In 1983 he had former President Richard Nixon speak at the LaPorte Holiday Inn as a county GOP fundraiser. Roger participated in the election of county offices, city offices, state offices, mayors, and governors. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of LaPorte. Roger enjoyed playing high school sports, and loved to read.

In May of 1992 he married Cindy (Torres) Singleton, who survives. In February of 1963 he married Marjorie Magnuson.

He is also survived by his two sons, Rodney A. (Kim) Singleton of Lake Tomahawk, WI, and Jeremy Torres of LaPorte, and daughter, Amy (Chris) James of LaPorte; five grandchildren, Sophie, Blake, Emiela, Christopher and Hope; and one sister, Elizabeth Habdas of Rolling Prairie, IN.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Sunday, June 7, from 1 to 5 p.m. and Monday, June 8, from 4 to 5 p.m. A life celebration will be held Monday at 5 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Evan Lash officiating. Cremation will take place.

Daryl Bentley, 1947-2015

Daryl L. Bentley, 67, of Michigan City, IN, died peacefully at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at Hospice Franciscan Communities in Michigan City.

He was born Sept. 12, 1947, in Michigan City to Bob and Betty (Rapp) Bentley.

Daryl retired from NIPSCO as an electrician in 2002 after 30 years of service. He loved NASCAR and watching football. Daryl was a loving husband.

On Oct. 19, 2013, in his home in Michigan City, he married Pamela (Granzo) Bentley, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Michael (Wendy) Bentley of LaPorte and Larry Greenwood of Scottsdale, AZ; one daughter, Colleen (John) Michalski of South Bend, IN; one sister, Cheryl (Mike) Osborne of Westville, IN; four grandchildren, Jessica and Scot Bentley, Erika Greenwood and Kenzie (Christian) Kantorwski; four great-grandchildren, James Dean, Savannah and Zoey Foulk and Cory Kantorwski; and two nephews, Brian and Kevin Osborne.

An open house in honor of Daryl’s life will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 11, at the Bentley home. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Clifford Cody, 1922-2015

Clifford CodyClifford L. Cody, 92, of LaPorte and formerly of Monticello, IL, died Friday, June 5, 2015.

He was born Nov. 22, 1922, in Nancy, KY, to Harry and Ella (Morris) Cody.

Clifford was a World War II Army veteran, served as a tank commander and was in the Battle of the Bulge. He retired from White Farm/Oliver as a welder. Clifford loved going fishing and watching John Wayne movies. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many and will be dearly missed.

On Nov. 22, 1942, in Monticello, IL, he married Emma Weddle, who survives. Their friends, Charles and Pearl Crawford of Monticello, stood up for them when they were married.

Clifford leaves behind his wife, Emma; two daughters, Linda (Michael) Rex of Albuquerque, NM, and Donna Cody of LaPorte; granddaughter, Tina Welches; great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Cody and Felicity Welches; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Mack (Marie) Cody, Dale (Bernice) Cody and Claude (Esther) Cody; sister, Stella (Hubert) Hickman; and beloved grandson, Bobby.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 9, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, with a service to follow at 6 p.m. A graveside service with military honors will be held Wednesday, June 10, at 1 p.m. at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Champaign, IL.

She was born Jan. 29, 1941, in Matfield Green, KS, to Jim and Inez (Anderson) Weeden.

Carol had worked for American Rubber Products for 13 years. She was a member of Rolling Prairie United Methodist Church. Carol loved to go fishing and camping and loved the outdoors. She loved her family and spending time with them.

On July 13, 1959, in Michigan City, IN, she married Melvin Miller, who preceded her in death April 26, 1996.

Carol was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Larry Weeden and Jim Weeden; and two sisters, Mary Knepp and Peggy Henshaw.

She is survived by two sons, Rodney Miller and David Miller, both of LaPorte; three daughters, Cathy (Dale) Bode of New Carlisle, IN, and Shelley (Tom) Probst and Toni Miller, both of LaPorte; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Mike Weeden of Kentucky; and three sisters, Lois Weeden of LaPorte, Annetta (Ed) Gillooley of Florida and Ula (Bob) Godfry of Tennessee.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Saturday, June 13, from 10 a.m. to noon. A life celebration will be held Saturday at noon at the funeral home with Pastor Debbie K. Beason officiating. Cremation will take place.

Joan Moldenhauer, 1946-2015

Joan MoldenhauerJoan Kay Moldenhauer, 68, of Michigan City, IN, died peacefully at 1:37 p.m. Friday, June 5, 2015, at Hospice Franciscan Communities in Michigan City.

She was born Sept. 23, 1946, in Michigan City to Aloysius and Modesta (Bent) Kolobuchowski.

Joan graduated from Elston High School in 1964 and attended Saint Stanislaus, Michigan City, for grade school. She was a member of Queens of All Saints Catholic Church in Michigan City. Joan enjoyed cooking, cookbooks, baking, reading, and playing games on her computer, especially Sudoku. She dearly loved her cat, Nathalie. Joan was a loving mother and sister.

A special thank you to the hospice staff, Mary, Colleen, and Lyne for the excellent care they provided.

On Sept. 27, 1969, in Michigan City, she married Donald Moldenhauer, who survives.

Also surviving are two children, Amy Konz and Sean Moldenhauer, both of Michigan City; two sisters, Dianne Herbig of Nebraska and Judy (Richard) Gatz of Rolling Prairie, IN; adopted son, Patrick Downey of Schererville, IN; cousins, Steven and Jeff Eason of Michigan City; cousin and special minister, Linda Middleton of Michigan City; godson, Andrew Herbid of Nebraska; and good friend, Sue Dabbert of Michigan City.

Preceding her in death were her parents and godmother, Margaret Eason.

Private services will be held at a later date. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Donald Long, 1937-2015

He was born Feb. 22, 1937, in Mill Creek to Raymond W. and Edith M. (Weedle) Long and lived in the Mill Creek area all his life.

Donald had worked for 25 years for Teledyne Casting Service, retiring in 1994. He was a member of the North American Hunting Club, Lincoln Twp. Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years, the Bass Federation, and Mill Creek Community Lions Club (10-year charter member). He was very active in supporting our troops.

On June 29, 1957, in Indiana, he married Phyllis (Perkins) Long, who preceded him in death on Feb. 27, 1998.

Donald was also preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Margaret Buckmaster and Kathleen Grage; and one brother, Terry Long.

He is survived by his loving companion, Lucille Salzer of Mill Creek; son, Kurtis (Meredith) Long of Fish Lake, IN; daughter, Cindy Wysocki of Linden, IN; five grandchildren, Cody Reeves, Carson Long, Allison Long, Sammy Long and Brian (Jennifer) Wysocki; one great-grandchild, Eliah Wysocki; five brothers, Harold Long of Attica, IN, James Patrick (Wilma) Long of Fish Lake, John (Audrey) Long of Fish Lake, Larry (LuAnn) Long of Walkerton, IN, and Francis (Kathy) Long of Westville, IN; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Thursday, June 11, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Friday, June 12, from 9 to 10 a.m. A life celebration will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Michael Heimer officiating. A Lions Club service will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow Friday’s service at Oak Grove Cemetery, Mill Creek.

She was born Jan. 23, 1943, in Chicago to Frank and Mildred (Kuczek) Wojdyla.

Dottie retired from the South Bend Tribune as a customer service representative. She graduated from LaPorte High School.

On Jan. 30, 1960, she married Norman A. Daisy, who survives. They were married 55 years.

Also surviving are her sons, Norman (Leeann) Daisy Jr. and Thomas Daisy, both of LaPorte; grandchildren, Brian, Nick, Alicia and Skylor Daisy; and many nieces and nephews.

Dottie was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Barbara Catalano; and brother, Jim Wojdyla.

Visitation will be held at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte on Friday, June 12, from 9 to 11 a.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with Reverend Ricky Bray officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

He was born July 19, 1932, in Michigan City to Robert E. and Frances (Thompson) Watson.

L.J. had worked at Westville Correctional Center for 20 years and also at Royal Metal for 34 years. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Otis, IN, and the American Legion of Union Mills, IN. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served during the Korean War. L.J. was a very active and caring person.

On Dec. 5, 1953, in Tracy, IN, he married Joan (Underwood) Watson, who survives.

He is also survived by his son, Bobby Watson of Michigan City; daughter, Cindy (James) Freeman of Michigan City; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Robert Wayne (Frances) Watson of Westville, IN; and one sister, Patricia Pearson of Michigan City.

L.J. was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Lolita Ballentine and Yvonne Watson; and one brother, James Watson.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Sunday, June 14, from 1 to 3 p.m. A life celebration will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Thomas Sabel officiating. Interment will follow at Union Mills Cemetery.

Ott, Lois obit photoLois L. Ott, 85, of LaPorte, died Monday, June 8, 2015, at IU Health LaPorte Hospital.

She was born Oct. 12, 1929, in LaCrosse, IN, to Dewey and Eunice Caroline (Vaughn) Scott.

Lois worked for many years at Plastic Services in LaPorte. She was also very involved with the Eagles Lodge in LaPorte for over 30 years. She served as past president and also in many other capacities, including cooking for weddings at the lodge.

She was married for 65 years to Fred Louis Ott Jr., who preceded her in death.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and stepbrother, Paul King.

Surviving are her beloved children, Kenneth Ott of Fort Worth, TX, Cheryl Creed of Valparaiso, IN, and Terry Ott of LaPorte; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Loretta Vaughn of LaPorte; stepbrother, Raymond of Knox, IN; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, June 15, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, with Pastor Roger Ash officiating. Visitation will be held Monday from 3 p.m. until the service. A cremation committal has taken place.

He was born April 20, 1931, in Westville, IN, to Melvin T. and Lennie (Wampler) Parks.

Fred worked as a manager at Delaney Furniture Store in LaPorte. He served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

On Dec. 22, 1951, he married Phyllis Cearing, who survives.

Also surviving are his beloved children, Debra (Michael) Purcell, Nancy (Harlan) Wiltfong and Robert (Patricia) Parks; five grandchildren, Shonna (Troy) Platz, Jillianne (Justin) Stratton, Allison (Joshua) Murphy, Meagan Parks and Tara (Tony) Lemus; 10 great-grandchildren, Cynee, Trenton, Ashton, Cadence, Aubrey, Noah, Logan, Olivia, Miley, and Jordan; and sister, Lucille Hartsock.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Brandon Parks; sisters, Elizabeth Brown, Ilene Tyner and Mary Knoll; and brothers, Melvin T. Parks Jr., Donald Parks, Lee Parks, Albert Parks and Wayne Parks.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 16, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, at the funeral home with Pastor Roger Ash officiating.  Interment will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

TerriMcClurephotoTerri A. McClure, of LaPorte, died suddenly on Saturday, June 13, 2015, at her home.

Born in Hammond, IN, Terri was the daughter of the late William Hajduk and Lottie Hajduk (Sczycut) of Naperville, IL.

All her life, Terri exhibited a servant’s heart, especially for children. Terri worked for many years at LaPorte County’s Kingsbury Elementary School Library, where she very much loved all of the students entrusted to her care; she never ceased to brighten up when sharing about her fond experiences with them.  She served many years on the LaPorte County 4-H Pigeon Committee, and she formerly taught Sunday school. Terri very much enjoyed spending her free time with her surviving husband Gary McClure, attending various festivals, fairs and other social events in the greater LaPorte area. Terri loved her husband and her family dearly, and will be greatly missed.

In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by her daughter, Gena (Derek) Edgar (Jayjack) of Burbank, CA; two sons, Aaron Jayjack of Austin, TX, and Nick (Polly) Jayjack of Fairfax, VA; four grandchildren, Addison Edgar and Anna, Warren and Corey Jayjack; one brother, Jim Hajduk of Georgia; and two sisters, Barbara Clark of Alabama and Bonnie Hajduk of Florida.

Visitation will be held Thursday, June 18, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, A funeral service will be held Friday, June 19, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with burial to follow in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

M. Helen KremkeM. Helen “Gangie” Kremke, 88, of Pensacola, FL, and formerly of Portage, IN, died peacefully at 10:27 p.m. Saturday, June 13, 2015, at Covenant Hospice Inpatient and Palliative Care Center in Pensacola.

She was born Sept. 20, 1926, in Blackburn, OK, to Marquis DeLafayette and Cora Leona (Lewis) Williams.

Helen and her husband, Harvey, owned and operated K&K Realty for 10 years. She worked in real estate for 28 years and sold antiques with her husband at the local antique mall. Helen was an avid reader and enjoyed vacationing around the country with her husband. She lived in Florida for 16 years. Helen attended McCool Methodist Church in Portage.

On Feb. 8, 1974, in Portage, she married Harvey Kremke Jr., who preceded her in death on June 24, 2011.

Also preceding her in death were her parents; one daughter, Pamela Kindig; four brothers; and one sister.

Surviving are three children, Paulette (Dean) Morton of Pensacola, Phil (Melissa) Kindig of Rolling Prairie, IN, and Patrick (Amanda) Kindig of LaPorte; six stepchildren, Donald (Kim) Kremke, Andy (Patty) Kremke, Charles (Ann) Kremke, Louise (Tom) Addison, Dona (Dick) Lorance, and Janet (Perry) Mitchell, all of Portage; seven grandchildren, Nadine Bramlett, Tricia Montes, John Yeoman, Kamela Cifaldi, Casey Kindig, Patrick Kindig, and Jaclyn Kindig; seven great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

A funeral celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 19, at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, with Pastor James Denton officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday, June 18, from 5 to 7 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. until the service.

Evelyn HarnessEvelyn L. Harness, 87, of South Bend, IN, died peacefully at 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at Wellbrooke of South Bend.

She was born June 14, 1927, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Loran E. and Adeline I. (Cochran) McCormick.

Evelyn worked for Howmet Castings, LaPorte, retiring on June 28, 1991, and for the United States Navy, drafting maps and charts for ship vessels during World War II. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting, antique furniture refinishing, fishing, cooking, baking, garage sales and flea markets, and loved wildlife. She was very independent. Evelyn’s family would come to her for advice, guidance and direction, considering her the Matriarch of their family.

Surviving are two children, Kristie L. (Sidney) Davis of Elkhart, IN, and Donald R. Harness Jr. of Iowa; four sisters, Vera “Peg” (George) Wroblewski, Nancy McCormick and Linda (Vince) Shortt, all of Rolling Prairie, IN, and Ruth “Eleanor” Falstich of LaPorte; one brother, Joe McCormick of Rolling Prairie; five grandchildren, David and Denise Harness, David E. Okeley, Michelle Mayo and Christopher Harness; and 13 great-grandchildren, Kolby, Mallory, Owen, Morgan, Nevaeh, Haven, David, Ava, Alayna, Christian, Kaitlyn, Cameron, and Kylie.

Preceding her in death were her parents; one son, Mark A. Harness; infant sister, Marilyn McCormick; sister, Joanne Erickson; and three brothers, Searl, John and Loran McCormick.

A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, June 20, at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, with Pastor James Bouslog officiating. Visitation will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. until the service. Burial will take place at Rolling Prairie Cemetery following the service.

Jack Travis, 1927-2015

Jack D. Travis, 87, of LaPorte, died Tuesday, June 16, 2015.

He was born Oct. 23, 1927, to Carol M. (Mangus) and Leland A. Travis.

Jack had been employed as a truck driver with Pepsi-Cola, Allis-Chalmers and Howmet. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and belonged to the American Legion, Hamon Gray Post 83, Stillwell Rod & Gun Club and National Rifle Association, and was Past President of the LaPorte Gun Club.

On March 17, 1951, Jack married Barbara Kruger, who preceded him in death on Aug. 15, 1993.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Flora J. Huntington; brothers, Ned and Larry Travis; and a grandson, Randy Elkins Jr.

Jack leaves behind his children, Jacqueline (Richard) Dolan, Douglas A. (Tessie) Travis, Gary M. (Michelle) Travis, Julie Travis, and Jill E. (Randy) Elkins; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Carolee Gardner.

A private family funeral will take place. Essling Funeral Home-Frank L. Keszei, director, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Graveside service for Charles “Charlie” Porter is June 21

A graveside memorial service and burial of ashes for Charles “Charlie” D. Porter, 83, will take place Sunday, June 21, at 1 p.m. at Rolling Prairie Cemetery with Pastor Dorothy Jones officiating.

Charlie, formerly of Rolling Prairie, IN, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2015, at his home in Cicero, IN, following an eight-month illness.

He was born Oct. 20, 1931, to Burl and Pauline Porter.

Charlie graduated from Rolling Prairie High School. He was a maintenance employee for the Indiana East-West Toll Road for 10 years. He worked for GTE for nearly 30 years, retiring in 1996. He later worked for Indiana Paging in Michigan City, IN, and Manpower in LaPorte. He was a Past Master of Rolling Prairie Lodge 291 F&AM, and a volunteer fireman with the Kankakee Township Volunteer Fire Department. He was the lodge secretary for 14 years and secretary-treasurer of the fire department for nearly 20 years. He was a volunteer usher at the Morris Performing Arts Center in South Bend, IN, for 14 years and served as a Boy Scout leader for Troop 353, Rolling Prairie, for almost 30 years. His proudest moments were when both sons became Eagle Scouts – the highest rank in Scouting.

Charlie and his wife were volunteers at Leighton Center for Seniors, South Bend, IN, where they also served on a Sage-ing Council and were trained as facilitators for several programs, leading classes for Leighton Center visitors. Charlie was involved in the center’s efforts to make legal in Indiana “Five Wishes,” a document to assist patients in dying with dignity. During his life, Charlie suffered a number of serious health issues, including a massive heart attack. Leighton Center invited him to speak about his experiences before a gathering of 400 employees of Memorial Hospital and he astonished even himself by doing a superb job.

On Nov. 4, 1951, in Rolling Prairie, he married Marcia Jones. The couple lived in Rolling Prairie for 50 years before moving to Cicero to be nearer their sons.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Marcia; his daughter, Susan Sims of Woodstock, GA; two sons, Timothy of Bloomington, IN, and Matthew of Noblesville, IN; two grandchildren, Sarah and Luke Porter; sister, Patricia of Detroit Lakes, MI; and brothers, Kenneth of LaPorte, Paul of Fort Wayne, IN, and Thomas of Columbia, TN.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Porter Sr., and nephew, John Porter Jr.

photo laueMiriam “Sue” Gail Laue, 82, of LaPorte, died Tuesday, June 9, 2015, at Miller Health and Rehabilitation, LaPorte.

She was born Aug. 22, 1932, in Beaver Dam, WI, to Lloyd and Doris (Walker) Larson.

Miriam retired from a career in nursing after 27 years. She was a member of Rolling Prairie United Methodist Church. Miriam enjoyed spending time with family, reading, listening to music, and sharing her nursing skills caring for people in the community.

On Sept. 3, 1955, in Beaver Dam, she married Vernon Elmer Laue, who preceded her in death in 2014.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, James Robert Laue; and brothers, Jack, Richard “Dick” and Russell.

Surviving are her beloved children, Steve (Pam) Laue of LaPorte, Stuart (Sandra) Laue of Henderson, NV, and Karen Drudi of Traverse City, MI; six grandchildren, Eric (Mindon) Laue of Milwaukee, WI, Kristin Laue of McCarthy, AK, Amanda Laue (Joseph O’Connor and a great-granddaughter on the way) of LaPorte, Ian Laue of LaPorte, Sean (Mei) Laue of Surprise, AZ, and Alexa Drudi of Traverse City, MI; and several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 27, at Rolling Prairie United Methodist Church with Rev. Debbie Beason and Rev. Dorothy Jones officiating. Visitation will take place Saturday from 10 a.m. until the service. A cremation committal has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte.
