John Clingler, 1939-2015

John W. Clingler, 75, of Union Mills, IN, and formerly of Valparaiso, IN, died Monday, May 18, 2015.

He was born Sept. 30, 1939, in Hebron, IN, to Willis and Matilda (Garvey) Clingler.

John graduated from The Indiana School for the Deaf in Indianapolis. He retired from American Home Foods Company and worked at Ye Olde Pipe Shoppe in LaPorte.

John is survived by his sisters, Roszelia Smyers of South Bend, IN, and Margaret (John Jr.) Coyle of Richmond, IN; three nieces and four nephews; and many great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Helen Cites and Irene Flynn; and brothers, Dave Flynn, Harry Clingler, Lester Flynn and Kenneth Clingler.

Visitation will be held at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, on Wednesday, May 20, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Graveside services will follow the visitation at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Union Mills Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Indiana School for the Deaf, 1200 E. 42nd St., Indianapolis, IN 46205.

Betty Watson, 1942-2015

20150518-131544_BettyWatson001Mrs. Betty A. Watson, 72, of LaPorte, died Sunday, May 17, 2015, at Miller’s Health and Rehabilitation in LaPorte.

She was born July 22, 1942, in Rossville, Georgia, to Franklin and Betty (Harris) Humphrey.

Betty had worked for the Tecnico Steel Co. She was a caregiver for her parents. Betty loved to do yard work, and especially loved her grandchildren.

She is survived by her two daughters, Kim (Mark) Lowery and Shelly (Charlie) Davis, both of Hamlet, IN; two grandchildren, Stephanie Lowery and Rachel (Eddie) Farias; two great-grandchildren, Lilly Yerington and Jeffrey Yerington; and two brothers, George Lamar (Diane) Humphrey of Hamlet and Franklin (Sharon) Humphrey Jr. of LaPorte.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Robert Humphrey.

There will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held at Patton Cemetery, LaPorte, on Thursday, May 21, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Terry Watson officiating. Interment will follow. Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Gertrude Ann WhiteGertrude A. White, 77, of LaPorte, died peacefully at 6 a.m. Sunday, May 17, 2015, in her home.

She was born at home on Nov. 24, 1937, in Seymour, Iowa, to Everett and Wynema (Norman) Liggett.

Gertrude was a 1956 graduate of Union Mills High School. She retired from Silgan Containers, LaPorte, in 1990. Gertrude was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, Union Mills. She was a fan of the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bulls. Gertrude was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, and friend who will be dearly missed.

Surviving are one son, Norman (Lori) White of Union Mills; one daughter, Jane (Carlos) Delanuez of White, GA; one sister, Kollene Highnote of LaPorte; seven grandchildren, Lindsey, Leah, Ryan, Lauren, Veronica, Cecillia, and Maria; sister-in-law, Ladonna Liggett; and brother-in-law, Glen Rosenbaum.

Preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers, Robert and Gene Liggett; and two sisters, Ayliffe Pinkerton and Shirley Rosenbaum.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 23, at Bethel Presbyterian Church, Union Mills, with Pastor John Beehler officiating. Visitation will be held at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, on Friday, May 22, from 4 to 7 p.m., and at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the service. Burial will be in Union Mills Cemetery following the service.

Frank “Tyke” Vernallis, 1965-2015

He was born Nov. 10, 1965, in Valparaiso, IN, to Frank and Sonia (Maczuzak) Vernallis.

Frank was a longshoreman for many years.

He leaves behind a daughter, Paige Vernallis of LaPorte; his parents, Frank and Sonia Vernallis of Portage, IN; sisters, Lauren (David) Testerman of Seattle, WA, and Beth (David) Benkert of Gilberts, IL; a brother, Brad Vernallis of Avon Lake, OH;  nieces and nephews,  Lindsay, Katelyn and Michaela Testerman, and Ava and Evan Vernallis;  and loving friend, Robin Baker of Hobart, IN.

Family and friends are welcome to attend a graveside service at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 23, at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

Bertha Schoof, 1922-2015

She was born Nov. 9, 1922, in LaPorte to Wilbur and Dora (Felton) Huge.

Bertha was a graduate of Rolling Prairie High School, a member of St. John Lutheran Church and LaPorte Hospital Retirees, and a past president and secretary of St. John Lutheran Circle 6. She retired from LaPorte Hospital in 1986 from Central Services. Bertha had a special relationship with the Lord and He carried her through the end of her illness. Her next love was her family, especially her grandchildren. She had a talent for beautiful embroidery work, which she shared with her family and friends. Bertha was a crossword puzzle whiz, enjoyed reading and loved the Cubs!

On Sept. 13, 1947, in LaPorte, she married Virgil (Spike) Schoof, who preceded her in death on Sept. 22, 1983.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Steven Lain; son-in-law, Terry Lain; and three sisters, Elizabeth Bracken, Erma Dial and Frances Grissamore.

Bertha is survived by two daughters, Gail Lain of Lakeland, FL, and Carla (David) Antos of LaPorte; son, Robert (Barb) Schoof of LaPorte; seven grandchildren, Jessica (Mike Robinson) Lain, Kyle (Elizabeth) Antos, Jon Antos, Matthew (fiancée, Cassie Wolfe) Antos, Gretchien (Jason Pettis) Smith, Christien (Heather) Schoof, and Anita (Gordon) Pytynia; 10 great-grandchildren, Steven and Xavier Robinson, Amaya, Isabelle, and Elin Robinson, Robby and Caitlyn King (fiancee Cole McIntosh), Bailey Pytynia, and Ethan and Ivy Schoof; two great-great-grandchildren, Sophie and Madelyn; and five sisters, Lydia Livinghouse of LaPorte, Doris Martensen of Cassopolis, MI, Carol Jesswein of New Carlisle, IN, Carolyn Snider of Attica, IN, and Wilma Glasshagel of Oxford, OH.

Visitation will be held at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, on Tuesday, May 26, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held at St. John Lutheran Church, LaPorte, at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, where family and friends may visit one hour prior to the funeral. Burial will follow in Patton Cemetery, LaPorte.

She was born June 3, 1931, in Michigan City, IN, to Clyde Alton Virge and Zoa Alice (Murray) Weber.

Geraldine was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker.

On April 17, 1949, in Michigan City, she married Robert M. McGee, who survives.

Also surviving are her beloved children, Bob (Ginger) McGee of LaPorte, Penny (Mike) Kaderly of LaPorte, Linda (Jay) Fisher of Las Vegas, NV, Nancy (Don) Goff of Decatur, MI, and Mike (Connie) McGee of New Carlisle, IN.

A Memorial Service will be held Monday, May 25, at 1 p.m. at the Jehovah’s Witnesses LaPorte Kingdom Hall, 1205 E. Jefferson Ave., LaPorte, with Tom Troxell officiating. A cremation committal has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, handling arrangements.

Frank Beamon, 1925-2015

He was born Feb. 2, 1925, in Vincennes, IN, to Cleatus and Pearl (Thompson) Beamon.

Frank had worked for New York Blower. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II, and a member of LaPorte American Legion Post 83. Frank enjoyed fixing bicycles and riding bikes. He liked watching the Tour of DeFrance bike race and car racing. Frank enjoyed the outdoors and doing yardwork.

On Aug. 30, 1952, in LaPorte, he married Mary (Noakes) Beamon, who preceded him in death Feb. 3, 2015.

Frank was also preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Erma and Donna; and two brothers, Harry and Dale.

He is survived by his daughter, Linda Beamon of LaPorte; brother, Paul Beamon of Vincennes, IN; and three sisters, Dorothy McCune of Vincennes, Betty Haubeil of Vincennes and June Carr of Kentucky.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Wednesday, May 27, from 9 to 11 a.m. A life celebration will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor JoEllyn Chadwick officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

Susan SandersMrs. Susan C. Sanders, 69, of LaPorte, died Sunday, May 24, 2015, at her home.

She was born Dec. 26, 1945, in LaPorte to Alfred and Pearl (Cavender) Wolfenbarger.

Susan had worked for Whirlpool and American Home Foods. She loved to cook, cross stitch and crochet. She also enjoyed doing yard work, especially the flowers. Susan loved animals and hummingbirds. She especially loved being with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

On Sept. 18, 1976, in LaPorte, she married Douglas Sanders Sr., who survives.

She is also survived by three sons, Douglas (Angela) Sanders II, Jimmie Adams and Scott Adams, all of LaPorte; four grandchildren, Hayley (Tim) Gust, Thomas Dykstra, William Dykstra and Paige Dykstra; two great-grandchildren, Parker Gust and Willow Elliott; and four brothers, Alfred (Lucy) Wolfenbarger of LaPorte, Michael (Vickie) Wolfenbarger of LaPorte, Edward Wolfenbarger of South Bend, IN, and Theo Wolfenbarger of LaPorte.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Brandon Adams; three brothers, Richard and Robert Wolfenbarger and special brother Donny Wolfenbarger; and one sister, Betty Kniefel.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Wednesday, May 27, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Thursday, May 28, from 10 to 11 a.m. A life celebration will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Bill Barnes officiating. Cremation will take place.

Richard Baske, 1921-2015

He was born Sept. 17, 1921, in Hanna to Bennie Bert and Sophia E.L. (Werner) Baske.

On April 14, 1946, in Crown Point, IN, he married Grace Elizabeth Rudolph, who preceded him in death on May 10, 2004.

His parents also preceded him in death.

Surviving are his beloved children, Robert E. (Marjorie) Baske and Melvin Baske, both of Hanna; grandchildren, Kristina L. (James) Hayes, Scott E. Baske, Nathan E. Baske and Matthew R. (Ashlee) Baske; and two great-grandchildren.

A private family service was held. A cremation committal has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, handling arrangements.

Donald Hix 001Donald E. Hix, 64, of LaPorte, died peacefully at 1:37 p.m. Friday, May 22, 2015, at Miller’s Health and Rehabilitation in LaPorte.

He was born Nov. 26, 1950, in LaPorte to Junior Everett and Nora Elizabeth (Knotts) Hix.

Don honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1968 to 1977, discharged as a Sgt E5, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He earned his living as a diesel mechanic. Don loved his family, good coffee and beer with friends.

On Dec. 13, 1971, in Lawton, OK, he married Regina (Jauga) Hix, who survives.

Also surviving are two children, Kimberly (John) Schmidt of Fort Hood, TX, and Chris (Linda) Hix of LaPorte; one brother, Roy (Karin) Hix of Mill Creek, IN; three grandchildren, Tatiana, Christian and Cade; one great-grandchild, Baby Tatiana; two cousins, Doug and Roger Klement; and his beloved dog and best companion, Diva.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one sister, Peggy Hardtke; four aunts, Terry Klement, Helen Ulrich, Norma Gene Strauss and Nina Ridge; one uncle, Donald E. Hix; and grandparents, Harlan and Blanche Hix, and Frank and Elsie Knotts.

In honor of Don’s memory, be good to your neighbor, hug someone you love, and above all else, never give up when times are tough.

Gerald L. KompGerald L. Komp, 87, of LaPorte, died peacefully at 4 a.m. Tuesday, May 26, 2015, in his home.

He was born March 11, 1928, in Appleton, WI, to Leo and Erma (Roehl) Komp.

Gerald was a member of First United Methodist Church, LaPorte, and Phi Delta Kappa fraternity. He loved golf and restoring cars. Gerald was a past board member of the Salvation Army and the YMCA. He was a loving husband and father.

On Nov. 19, 1977, at First United Methodist Church, LaPorte, he married Patricia (Newton) Komp, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Steven Komp of Dallas, TX; two daughters, Christina (Richard) Smith of New Carlisle, IN, and Barbara Komp of Skokie, IL; and one grandson, Kevin Komp of Dallas.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one sister, Mary Chinn; three brothers, Robert, Donald and Richard Komp; and one granddaughter, Erin Komp.

There will be no services. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

She was born Feb. 15, 1946.

She leaves behind four sons, Richard Melton (Michele), Gerald Lovett (Mary Lynn), Thomas Lovett (Vicki) and Brian Lovett (Shannon); 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Donna was preceded in death by her father, Gerald Rhoades; mother, Hazel Holland; and daughter, Deborah Lynn Hacker.

A memorial service will be held at Northridge Woodhaven Funeral Home, Millington, TN.  A cremation committal has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Terry Lee Martin, 72, of Bloomington, IN, and formerly of LaPorte, died Thursday, May, 28, 2015, following a 13 1/2-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

He was born May 22, 1943, in Michigan City, IN, to William and Peggy (Hasemeyer) Martin.

Terry graduated from Elston High School in Michigan City. He went on to retire from NIPSCO as a gas serviceman after 31 years of service.

On June 5, 1993, in Valparaiso, IN, he married Kathleen E. Cartwright, who survives.

Terry is also survived by two sons, Scott Martin of Yorkville, IL, and Shaun Martin of McClenny, FL; one stepson, Brian (Renae) Cartwright of Bedford, IN; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one step-grandchild; two sisters, Sally (Larry) Novak of Orange Park, FL, and Sandra (Robert) Flotow of Savannah, GA; one brother, John “Jack” Martin of Rolling Prairie, IN; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents and a brother, William Martin.

Visitation will be held at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, on Monday, June 1, from 4 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 2, at a time to be determined at the funeral home, where family and friends may visit one hour prior to the service.

Michael Zimmerman, 1950-2015

He was born Oct. 3, 1950, in Hammond, IN, to Charles and Beatrice (Shultz) Zimmerman.

Michael was a U.S. veteran, having served as a Green Beret in three tours of duty in Vietnam. He enjoyed fishing, horses and spending time with his family. He was also a Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed Beatles music.

On Aug. 17, 1996, he married Mary O’Brien, who survives.

Also surviving are his beloved children, Cari Zimmerman of Griffith, IN, Lindsay Zimmerman of Cedar Lake, IN, Christina Bishop of Arizona, Michelle (Daniel) Irvine of Portage, IN, Anthony Rincon of Mishawaka, IN, and Jason (Angie) Hayes of South Bend, IN; and grandchildren, Logan, Luca, Adron, Tia, Drake, Alec, Taylor, Keeli, Sidney, Olivia, Ethan, Devin, and Dominick.

He was preceded in death by his parents and stepson, Clinton Hayes.

A Celebration of Life gathering will take place June 7 at 2 p.m. at the M&M Ranch, 10827 W. Division Rd., Westville, IN. A cremation committal has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte.

In lieu of flowers, the family would love to receive plants that can be planted in the special memorial garden that the family will be creating at their home.

Mitchell Miller, 1931-2015

Mitchell Miller, 83, of LaPorte, died Sunday, May 31, 2015, at Miller’s Health and Rehabilitation in LaPorte.

He was born June 16, 1931, in Salyersville, KY, to Will and Dovie (Howard) Miller.

Mitchell worked for 34 years at Allis-Chalmers in LaPorte; he had also worked at General Motors (Electro Locomotive). He enjoyed gardening, woodworking and refurbishing furniture.

On July 2, 1949, in Prestonsburg, KY, he married Alice (Shepherd) Miller, who preceded him in death March 3, 2014.

Mitchell was also preceded in death by his parents; one son, Ralph Miller; one daughter, Garnet Miller; three sisters, Parrot Wireman, Lanie Shepard and Victoria West; and two brothers, Sam Miller and Arnold Miller.

He is survived by his brother, Willie Miller of Medaryville, IN; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Barbara Lindgren and Burl White.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Wednesday, June 3, from 9 to 11 a.m. A life celebration will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Paul Coldiron and Pastor Joe White officiating. Interment will follow at Kingsbury Cemetery, Kingsbury, IN.

Albert Meece, 1947-2015

Albert MeeceAlbert E. Meece, 68, of LaPorte, died peacefully at 7:40 a.m. Friday, May 29, 2015, at Hospice Franciscan Communities in Michigan City, IN.

He was born April 7, 1947, in Michigan City to James E. and Martha Jane Meece.

Albert retired from the Michigan City Municipal Department after over 30 years of service. He was a past member of the American Legion and Moose Lodge, both in Michigan City. Albert loved gardening and dancing, especially the Jiggerbug Dance.

On May 30, 1970, in Michigan City, he married Suzanne Elaine (Wilke) Meece, who preceded him in death.

Also preceding him in death were his parents, grandparents and three brothers, Bill, Bob and Larry Meece.

Surviving are his daughter, Laurie (Rob) Sabie of Union Mills, IN; seven sisters, Marie (Molly) Brown of Trail Creek, IN, Martha Bolliger of Kansas, Helen (Jenny) Meece of Westville, IN, Shirley (Virgil) Lockwood of California, Margie (Donald) Picking of Kansas, Mary (Jack) Zahrndt of Michigan City, and Joanie (Jim) Sliwa of Tampa, FL; four brothers, Terry (Carmelina) Meece of Chesterton, IN, Charles (Mae) Meece of Pines Township, IN, Jerry Meece of Michigan City and Donald Meece of Kansas; one uncle, Dan Hildreth of Washington; and one grandson, Dylan Charles Schlundt of Colorado.

There will be no services. Burial will take place at a later date at Springville Cemetery, LaPorte County. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Edsel “Buck” Horn, 1933-2015

Mr. Edsel “Buck” F. Horn, 82, of Michigan City, IN, died Monday, June 1, 2015, at his home.

He was born Feb. 12, 1933, in Hopper, Arkansas, to Ted and Lottie (Holifield) Horn.

Buck had worked for 43 years for Dwyer Products. He loved to go camping, fishing and hunting and also enjoyed the outdoors and traveling. Buck especially loved spending time with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

On June 28, 1952, in Beverly Shores, IN, he married Alice (Metts) Horn, who survives.

He is also survived by his daughter, Kim Horn of Michigan City; three sons, Leslie Horn, Larry (Shirley) Horn and Terry (Dania) Horn, all of Michigan City; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth and Ted (Kathy) Horn, both of Arkansas; sister, Doris Miller of Libertyville, IL; sisters-in-law, Beverly (John) Parrett of LaPorte and Janet Horn of Glenwood, AR; and several nieces and nephews.

Buck was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Billy Carol Horn, and one sister, Clarene Betts.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Thursday, June 4, from 9 to 11 a.m. A life celebration will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Hanna Cemetery, Hanna, IN.

20150602-103529_CoraMetcalf001Cora Bailey Metcalf, 99, of Whiteland, IN, and formerly of LaPorte, died Sunday, May 31, 2015, at Franklin United Methodist Community in Franklin, IN.

She was born Dec. 13, 1915, in Starke County, IN, to Harry Leslie Bailey and Nora Eveline (Melvin) Bailey.

Cora had worked 27 1/2 years for Howmet, retiring in 1985. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of LaPorte; Past Matron of Eastern Star, LaPorte Chapter 280; High Worthy Priestess of WSI Covenant Shrine; and had been a Brownie and Girl Scout leader.

On July 31, 1937, in Michigan City, IN, she married Chester Metcalf, who preceded her in death Sept. 10, 2003. Her first marriage was in 1932 in Crown Point, IN, to Clarence Clauson, who preceded her in death Nov. 29, 1935.

Cora was also preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Samuel, Russell, Allen, Harry and Howard; and five sisters, Esther, Edna, Leah, Dorothy and Irene.

She is survived by her daughter, Donna (Robert) Dhondt of Greenwood, IN; two sons, Arthur (Jan) Clauson of Dallas, TX, and Wayne (Linda) Metcalf of Bridgeton, MO; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lula Lounsberry of Michigan.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Friday, June 5, from 11 a.m. to noon. A life celebration will be held Friday at noon at the funeral home with her grandson David Clauson officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

Joann Phillips 001JoAnn P. Phillips, 73, of LaPorte, died peacefully at 1:25 a.m. Saturday, May 30, 2015, at Hospice Franciscan Communities in Michigan City, IN.

She was born Feb. 5, 1942, in St. Louis, MO, to Glenn Prinkey and Herble (Hyatt) Parker.

JoAnn was a member of The River Christian Fellowship, LaPorte. She loved to attend church and read.

In Pennsylvania, she married the love of her life, Jim Phillips, who preceded her in death.

Also preceding her in death were her parents, grandparents and great-grandchild, Rory Tinoco.

Surviving are seven children, Kim Hawkins, David McMillan and Tracey Chavez, all of LaPorte, Sherri Phillips of Florida, Stephen Libera of Oklahoma, Jordan Libera of LaPorte, and John Yocum of Pennsylvania; one sister, Jan Huth of Oregon; and 25 grandchildren: Amber Burosh, Brady Dora, Mariah Held, Brenden Held, Brandon McMillan, Michael McSweeney, Eryn, Breland, Breanna and Paigh McMillan, Hannon Phillips, Nicholas Madden, Kristan Presley, Tiffeny, Katelyn and Hailey Sweger, Faith, James, Alexander, Joshua and Noah Phillips, Gracie, Christopher and Riley Libera, and Aria Harradon.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, at The River Christian Fellowship, 2699 N. Ind. 39, LaPorte, with Pastor Jack Balon officiating. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.
