Raymond Dubie, 1928-2014

Raymond DubieRaymond S. Dubie, 86, of LaPorte, died peacefully at 1:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 12, 2014, at Miller’s Merry Manor, New Carlisle, IN.

He was born in February of 1928 in New York City to Stanley and Stafania (Pockowski) Dziubakiewicz.

Raymond was the owner and operator of DeRay Cleaners.

On June 26, 1959, at St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church in Michigan City, IN, he married Constance Di Giacomo, who preceded him in death.

His parents and brother Stanley also preceded him in death.

Raymond is survived by two brothers-in-law, Ronald (Delores) Di Giacomo and Frank Di Giacomo; two nieces, Angie (Zbigniew) Resiak and Kristina Di Giacomo; and one nephew, John (Brooke) Di Giacomo.

Cremation will take place. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Bret Churchill #2   001Bret Allen Churchill, 43, of LaPorte, died unexpectedly at 5:02 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, 2014, in his home.

He was born Nov. 19, 1971, in LaPorte to Henry Colston and Darlene (Churchill) Miller.

Bret enjoyed working on cars, such as detailing, bodywork and painting. He especially loved working on his daughter’s car. Bret loved hanging out and spending time with family and friends, and helping others.

Surviving are his mother, Darlene Miller-Dickt; one daughter, Alexzandria Churchill of LaPorte; stepfather, Roman Dickt, seven brothers, Shawn, Matthew and Eric Colston, all of LaPorte, Danny Miller, Charles (Linda) Miller and William Miller Jr., also all of LaPorte, and William D. Miller of Texas; two sisters, Eva Arnette and Cynthia Geren, both of LaPorte; three aunts, Betty (Duke) Dickson of LaPorte, Anna (Eugene) Vermilyer of Fish Lake, IN, and Shirley Lindsey of Michigan; two uncles, Leon (Joyce) Churchill of LaPorte and Silas Churchill of southern Indiana; four grandchildren, Natalie, Emily, Michael and Sophia; best friend, Brian Koontz of LaPorte; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his father; stepfather, William H. Miller Sr.; one sister, Tersha Rosetto; one brother, Dallas Miller; one aunt, Mary Gibson; and one uncle, David Churchill Sr.

A funeral celebrating his life will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, with Pastor Greg Irwin officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 3 p.m. until the service.

He was born Nov. 15, 1942, in Kanna, Poland, to Jan and Zofia (Czupryna) Misiewicz.

Stanislaw was a welder with IMW for many years.

On Sept. 17, 1977, he married Irena Dziekanowski, who survives.

Also surviving are sons, Chris (Anna) Misiewicz of LaPorte and Lukasz Misiewicz of Bloomington, IN; grandson, Konrad Misiewicz; sister, Krystyna Lis of Poland; and brother, Tadeusz Misiewicz of Poland.

A brother, Mieczyslaw, preceded him in death.

Visitation will be at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, on Friday, Dec. 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. The Rosary will be prayed at 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, LaPorte. Burial will follow in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

Gean Hammons, 1936-2014

Gean Hammons, formerly of LaPorte, died Nov 28, 2014, in Florida after a brief illness.
He was born Dec. 31, 1936, in Detroit, MI, to Horace and Lucille (Woolbright) Hammons.
Gean’s interests were hunting, drawing and the stock market. He worked at American Rubber in LaPorte, then at Tucker Freight Line in Michigan City, from which he retired.
Surviving are three sons, Danny Hammons of Sawyer, MI, Brett Hammons of Seneca, MO, and Cary Hammons of LaPorte; two daughters, Jodie Gilchrist of Rolling Prairie, IN, and Laura Holtzclaw of Magnolia, AK; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Joy Hughes of Westville, IN, and Barbara Russell of St Petersburg, FL.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Janice Schultz.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Doris Yandt, 1928-2014

Doris Yandt 001Doris L. Yandt, 86, of LaPorte and formerly of La Crosse, WI, died peacefully at 4:20 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, 2014, at Golden Living Center-Fountainview Terrace, LaPorte.

She was born Oct. 2, 1928, in Delavan, WI, to Louis and Selma (Olsen) Lillethun.

Doris was a loving homemaker and a member of First Lutheran Church, La Crosse. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, cooking and volunteering at the school and church when her children were younger.

On Sept. 24, 1949, in La Crosse, she married the love of her life, Artis Yandt, who preceded her in death in 2008.

Also preceding her in death were her parents; one daughter, Diane Yandt-Bayer; and one brother, Morris Lillenthun.

Surviving are three children, Eric (Janice) Yandt of LaPorte, Lori (Don) Van Dierendonck of Fish Lake, IN, and Roderick Yandt of Bloomington, IN; 10 grandchildren; one niece, Joyce Cartwright of La Crosse; one cousin and special friend, Jean Bakkom; one sister-in-law, Lois Loveng; and many nieces and nephews.

There will be no services. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements. Burial will be in Patton Cemetery, LaPorte, at a later date.

Walter Buckmaster, 1927-2014

Mr. Walter E. Buckmaster, 87, of Walkerton, IN, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2014, at Walkerton-Miller’s Merry Manor.

He was born Nov. 11, 1927, in LaPorte to Clyde and Marie (Goethals) Buckmaster.

Walter had worked at Screw Machine Co., Five Star Supermarket, Hamilton Grove Communities and White Farm Equipment. Walter was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and a member of LaPorte American Legion Post 83. He was a graduate of Stillwell School, where he played basketball. He enjoyed playing word puzzles.

He married Margaret (Long) Buckmaster, who preceded him in death; Mildred (Slater) Buckmaster, who preceded him in death; and first wife, Betty Jean (Gribble) Buckmaster, who preceded him in death.

His parents, three brothers and three sisters also preceded him in death.

He is survived by two sons, Phillip (Terri) Buckmaster of Walkerton and Michael (Melodie) Buckmaster Sr. of LaPorte; numerous stepsons and stepdaughters; five grandchildren, Michael Buckmaster, Alan Buckmaster, Dawn Buckmaster; Brian Vermilyer and Blaine Vermilyer; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brother, Ronald (Sandra) Buckmaster of Walkerton; two sisters, Jean Collings of North Liberty, IN, and Ellen Thomas of LaPorte; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Thursday, Dec. 18, from 10 to 11 a.m. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Bill Barnes officiating. A military service will be conducted by LaPorte American Legion Post 83 at the funeral home. Burial of ashes will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery, Mill Creek, IN, at a later date.

She is also a niece to Alisha (Jesus) Vance of South Bend, IN, Brandi Vance of LaPorte, Roy Vance of West Virginia, and Dianna and Tabitha Ramirez of LaPorte.

Visitation for Esalita will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, where a funeral service will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

She was born Feb. 17, 1995, in LaPorte to Travis Wireman and Shanna (Daniel) Cantrell.

Devin was very creative. She enjoyed fashion, making hair bows, taking pictures and going to the beach. Most of all, Devin loved spending time with her children, family and friends.

Surviving are her beloved children, Macy and Colson, at home; her mother and stepfather, Shanna and Robert “Bobby” Cantrell; her father and stepmother, Travis and Tinisha Wireman; sister, Taylor McAlister of LaPorte; brothers, Gavin Wireman and Rayden Wireman, both of LaPorte; stepsister, Alexis Cantrell of Rolling Prairie, IN; grandparents, James and Kathy Daniel of LaPorte, Larry Wireman of LaPorte, and Jenny Tow of Rensselaer, IN; uncles, Shawn and Scott Daniel of LaPorte; aunts, Carrie Murphy and Brenda Lane of Rensselaer; best friend and father of her children, Jacob Burdine of Michigan City, IN; and her cat, Polly. She is also survived by her Volvo, Cash.

She was preceded in death by her cousin, Shelby Nicole Daniel, and grandparents, Raymond and Pauline Baud, and James and Hazel Daniel.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, with Pastor Roger Ash officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 10 a.m. until the service. Burial will take place following the service at Patton Cemetery, LaPorte.

Richard Schmuhl 001Richard John Schmuhl, 83, of Michigan City, IN, died unexpectedly at 7:33 a.m. Friday, Dec. 19, 2014, at his home.

He was born Dec. 17, 1931, in Michigan City to Louis and Olga (Kratch) Schmuhl.

Richard honorably served in the United States Army. He retired in 1996 from Dwyer Products. Richard loved country music and taking walks. He also enjoyed playing cards. Richard always had a good joke to tell. He was a member of the FOP, VFW and DAV. He never drove past an organization without stopping in to visit.

Surviving are his lifelong companion, Joyce Putz of Michigan City; two children, Dale (Margene) Schmuhl of Michigan City and Debra (Todd) Aldrich of LaPorte; four grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother, Norman Schmuhl.

Cremation will take place. There will be no services. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Steven Gilliland, 1950-2014

He was born May 21, 1950, in LaPorte to Glenn R. and Dixie (Morning) Gilliland.

Steven retired in 2010 after 39 years as an electrician with Bethlehem Steel and ArcelorMittal. He received an associate degree from Purdue North Central, was a member of United Steelworkers of America Union 6787, and was a former U.S. Merchant Marine. He coached Little League and enjoyed camping, as well as spending time with his family and being a grandpa.

On June 26, 1971, Steven married Lynne Ann Lehker, who preceded him in death on Aug. 9, 2013.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jane Gilliland.

Steven is survived by a daughter, Stephanie (Adam) Smith of LaPorte; sons, David (Meghan) Gilliland of LaPorte and Brad (Melissa) Moore of Winter Park, FL; grandchildren, Parker, Giovanna, Lauren, Grant, Brynnley, and Faith; a sister, Kathleen (Mike) Christian of Fort Worth, TX; and a brother, Edward (Marie) Gilliland of LaPorte.

Visitation will be held at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, on Monday, Dec. 22, from 4 to 6 p.m., and Tuesday, Dec. 23, from 10 to 11 a.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Daniel Scales, Sr 001Daniel David Scales Sr., 79, of LaPorte, died peacefully at 10:58 a.m. Friday, Dec. 19, 2014, at Franciscan Communities Hospice, Michigan City, IN.

He was born March 20, 1935, in Perry County, IN, to William F. and Bertha (Butler) Scales.

Daniel retired in 2002 from Sullair Company, Michigan City, after 25 years of service. He was a member of Moose Lodge 980 in Michigan City, an animal lover and an avid fan of the Yankees, Cubs, Colts (especially former Colt Peyton Manning) and NASCAR (especially Jimmy Johnson).

On Sept. 2, 1978, in LaPorte, he married Clara (Phillips) Scales, who survives.

Also surviving are four children, Heather (Erik) Tannehill of Michigan City, Sharon (Gilbert) Romero of LaPorte, Daniel (Phyllis) Bolin of Princeton, IN, and Rebecca Starr (Michael) Arnold of Cannelton, IN; one sister, Thelma Arnold of Tell City, IN; eight grandchildren, Samantha Weinbrecht, Benjamin Bolin, Isaac Bolin, Lindsay Romero, Chelsea Romero, Jessica Arnold, Nicholas Arnold, and Connor Tannehill; and two great-grandchildren, Furie and Kass Weinbrecht.

His parents and 11 siblings preceded him in death.

A funeral celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, with David Lewis officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 9 a.m. until the service. Burial will be in Springville Cemetery, LaPorte.

Mr. Norman E. Teets, 77, of Walkerton, IN, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, at Walkerton-Miller’s Merry Manor.
He was born Nov. 1, 1937, in LaPorte to Frank and Sheila (Jendrzek) Teets.
Norman worked as a insurance agent for Commonwealth/Monumental and was very successful. He attended Grace Baptist Church in LaPorte. He loved fishing and traveling to the Caribbean and Hawaii. Norman loved working in the yard. He is at Peace with Lord Jesus Christ.
On Aug. 22, 1959, in River Forest, IL, he married Carol (Wheeler) Teets, who survives.
He is also survived by his son, Gary (Liberty) Teets; daughter, Tammy (David) Teets-Mergenthaler of New Lenox, IL; grandchildren, Joseph “Joey” Mergenthaler and Shannon (Britton) Jones; great-grandchildren, Braydon and Bradley; two sisters, Eleanor Nickel and Ramona Bendix, both of Michigan City, IN; and several nieces and nephews.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Clarence Teets; and brothers-in-law, Roger Nickel and Don Bendix.
There will be no visitation or services. Cremation will take place. Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

She was born Feb. 17, 1918, in South Bend, IN, to Gustaf and Hulda (Bowman) Nordblad.

Florence was a member of the LaPorte Lions Club. She had an extraordinary life as a loving family woman. Her home was built by hand in 1938 by her loving husband and has become a staple in LaPorte known as “Emigh Corner” for more than 76 years.

On July 2, 1938, in South Bend, she married John E. Emigh, who preceded her in death Feb. 12, 2002.

Florence was also preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Sandra K. Liffick, who passed away in November 1989; son, John W. Emigh Sr., who passed away in October 2003; and two sisters, Geraldine Lawson and Madeline Perschke.

She is survived by her loving daughter-in-law, Judy Emigh of LaPorte; two grandchildren, Tami (Kris) Barber of Rolling Prairie, IN, and John Emigh Jr. of Detroit, MI; and four great-grandchildren, Eric Barber of Rolling Prairie, Brooke Barber of Rolling Prairie, Matthew Emigh of Chicago and Sarah Emigh of Leesburg, IN.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Friday, Dec. 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A life celebration will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Jeff Zigler officiating. Interment will follow at Patton Cemetery, LaPorte.

She was born June 23, 1960, in Michigan City, IN, to Richard and Virginia (Matthew) Weaver.

Cheryl worked for Pall Filter Specialist in Michigan City. She enjoyed doing crafts and going shopping. She loved the beach and Lake Michigan and enjoyed her cat, Snowball, and dogs, Flash and Buster. She especially loved her grandchildren.

On Sept. 13, 2014, in Mill Creek, she married Albert David Wilson Jr., who survives.

She is also survived by her mother, Virginia Weaver of Arkansas; son, Jeff (Stephanie) Irk of LaPorte; two daughters, Chevin (Mark) Swinton of Waverly, IA, and Samantha Irk of LaPorte; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Weaver of Eagle Grove, IA, and Robert Weaver of Kanawha, IA; and four sisters, Virginia (Rick) Lawson of Michigan City, Kimberly (Elis) Cox of Kensett, AR, Mary Ann (Jimmy) Champlin of Ward, AR, and Malissa (Nikia) Passmore of Searcy, AR.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her father.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation services, LaPorte, on Tuesday, Dec. 23, from 2 to 6 p.m. and Wednesday, Dec. 24, from noon to 1 p.m. A life celebration will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Randy Cook officiating. Interment will follow at Sauktown Cemetery, Mill Creek.

Artur Song, Sr 001Artur Sorg Sr., 86, of LaPorte, died unexpectedly at 3:10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2014, at IU Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis.

He was born Aug. 13, 1928, in Waiblinger, Germany, to Herman and Amalie (Almeneinger) Sorg.

Artur was a retired patternmaker. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, pitching horseshoes, going out on his pontoon boat, traveling, and attending family gatherings.

On Feb. 26, 1948, in Waiblinger, Germany, he married Gerlinde (Heinrich) Sorg, who survives.

Also surviving are five children, Wolfgang (Sandy) Sorg of Mill Creek, IN, Gisela (James) Eggleston of Saugany Lake, IN, Susie (Gary) Lawson of Mill Creek, Gabriele (Ron) Phillips of Rolling Prairie, IN, and Artur (Nicole Thode) Sorg Jr. of Mill Creek; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother, Werner Sorg.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 1 p.m. Central Time Saturday, Dec. 27, at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte. Visitation will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. until the service. Burial will take place at New Carlisle Cemetery, New Carlisle, IN, at a later date.

George William Lehker, 58, of Rolling Prairie, IN, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2014, at IU Health LaPorte Hospital.

He was born July 30, 1956, in LaPorte to Walter and Roberta (Carnes) Lehker.

George worked in sales and service for Diedrich Drill Inc. for 28 years. He was a member of Maple Grove United Methodist Church in New Carlisle, IN. George loved riding on his tractor and spending time with his dog, Bo.

On May 17, 1980, he married Tara Bock, who survives.

Also surviving is his beloved daughter, Rachel Lehker of Rolling Prairie.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. CST Monday, Dec. 29, at Maple Grove United Methodist Church, New Carlisle, with Rev. Robert Raschka officiating. Visitation will be held at the church Monday from 1 p.m. until the service. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery.

He was born May 5, 1956, in Madisonville, KY, to Ardell and Josephine (Johnson) Huddleston.

Denny was a member of Christ Gospel Church of LaPorte. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, fishing with his grandsons, singing, and reading the newspaper.

Surviving are his beloved son, Scott (Jennifer) Huddleston of LaPorte; stepchildren, Shelly (Chris) Pintzke of LaPorte, Kim (Rich) Ayala of Plymouth, IN, Michael (Monica) Rowe of LaPorte and Sandy Evans of Martin, MI; grandchildren, Larry (Viva) Benton of Plainwell, MI, Cassandra (Dale) Morris of LaPorte, Sarah Benton of Martin, MI, and Samuel and Max Huddleston of LaPorte; great-grandsons, Bryson and Dylan Morris of LaPorte; mother-in-law, Ogie Sizemore of LaPorte; siblings, Donald Johnson of Saint Charles, KY, Kay (Steve) Brunson of Georgetown,TX, Michael Huddleston of Saint Charles, KY, Charles (Brenda) Huddleston of Coldwater, MI, and Leo (Kathy) Huddleston, Violet (Robert) Ipock and Carolyn Huddleston, all of Saint Charles, KY; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 31 years, Kathy Huddleston of LaPorte; his parents; two brothers, Dale Huddleston of Madisonville, KY, and Larry Huddleston of Charlestown, IN; sister, Carlotta Huddleston; and niece, Kimberly Ipock of Saint Charles, KY.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 29, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, with Pastor Ricky Bray officiating. Visitation will be held Monday from 9 a.m. until the service. Cremation will follow the service.

Schoof, Lorraine obit photoLorraine Laverne Schoof, 72, of LaPorte, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2014, at IU Health LaPorte Hospital.

She was born Aug. 18, 1942, in LaPorte to Alfred and Harriet (Schultz) Hubner.

Lorraine worked as a cake decorator for 28 years.  She enjoyed needlework and loved to read.

On May 19, 1962, she married Vernon Schoof, who survives.

Also surviving are her beloved sons, Douglas (Donna) Schoof of Woodridge, IL, and Glen Schoof of Kingsford Heights, IN; grandchildren, Levi and Brittany Schoof; and sisters, Diane Hubner of LaPorte and Geri (Terry) Snyder of Sebring, FL.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Matthew.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2 p.m. until the service. A cremation committal will take place following the service.

Paula L. Bailey 001Paula L. Bailey, 54, of LaPorte, died peacefully at 11:28 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26, 2014, at Franciscan Community Hospice, Michigan City, IN.

She was born Jan. 9, 1960, in Baltimore, MD, to George and Patricia (Buettner) Adey, who survive.

Paula was a property manager for many years. She loved the beach, shopping, watching old movies and TV shows, family gatherings, cookouts, and spending time with her grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and her dog, Shelby (Pooh).

On May 27, 1978, in Michigan City, she married Danny Bailey, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Kay (Todd) Pliske of LaPorte and Rachel Bailey (Sergio Serrano) of Michigan City; two sisters, Renee Anderson and Becky (Keith) Gouge, both of Michigan City; two brothers, George (Sue) Adey Jr. of the Pines, IN, and Mark (Elizabeth) Adey of South Bend, IN; two grandchildren, Braxton and Colton; special nieces and nephews, Joshua, Jillian, Janelle, Jacob, Heather, Jennifer, Amber, Ben, and Amaryllis; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents.

A funeral celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, with Pastor Dennis Pickens officiating. Visitation will be held Monday, Dec. 29, from 5 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the service. Burial will take place in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte, following the service.

Fred Day, 1923-2014

20141228-123634_FredDay011Mr. Fred L. Day, 91, of Knox, IN, and formerly of LaPorte, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2014, at IU Health Starke Hospital, Knox.

He was born July 31, 1923, in Peru, IN, to Joseph and Martha (Britton) Day.

Fred worked as a machinist for Allis-Chalmers Corp. for over 35 years, retiring in 1982. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II. He was a member of the PNA and PRCU, and he loved to bowl.

On Sept. 5, 1942, in LaPorte, he married Elizabeth Goodson Day, who preceded him in death Aug. 15, 2004.

Fred was also preceded in death by his parents and two sons, Roger Day and James Day.

He is survived by his two daughters, Judy (Hershel) Jones of Knox and Beckie (Mike) Moore of Three Oaks, MI; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Robert Day of LaPorte; and sister, Shirley Hibner of Michigan City, IN.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Dec. 30, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte. A life celebration will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.
