Marvin L. Goad, 85, of LaPorte, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2014, at Brentwood in LaPorte.
He was born July 6, 1929, in South Bend, IN, to Lewis and Opal Faye (Dewees) Goad.
Marv graduated from LaPorte High School in 1947 and received an associate degree from Purdue University. He retired in 1992 from Bendix Corp. in LaPorte after 37 years as an engineering designer. Marv served as the general chairman of the LaPorte Jaycees 4th of July Celebration in 1958. He was a member and past president of the LaPorte Rotary Club, was a Paul Harris Fellow through Rotary International, and was a past LaPorte High School Athletic Booster Club president, Sunday school teacher for 50 years, and a Meals on Wheels volunteer and board member for many years. Marv was one of the founders and organizers of the LaPorte High School Athletic Booster Club in 1975. In 1981 he received the President’s Award from LaPorte High School Athletic Booster Club for his outstanding service and dedication above and beyond the call of duty. Marv was the announcer for LPHS girls basketball through the 1979-2003 seasons, totaling 23 years. Then he was the announcer for LPHS girls volleyball 1989-2005 season, totaling 15 years. His next announcing assignment was for LPHS boys baseball from 1992-2004, totaling 12 years, and his final announcing assignment was for LPHS boys basketball from the 2001-2005 seasons, totaling 4 years. He also had the scoring assignment for 6 years. This totaled 10 years of service for this team.
Together with his wife, Jane, he was a member of the Dugout Club of the LaPorte Baseball Association. Marv and Jane received the LPHS Athletic Booster Service Award for their contribution to the athletic program through the countless hours of voluntary service and dedication to the goal of promoting high school athletics in the LaPorte Community. In 1999 they were recipients of the Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Distinguished Service Award. In February 2014 Marv and Jane were inducted into the Norman J. Hubner Athletic Hall of Fame.
Marv was a former member of Countryside Christian Church and most recently attended First Church of God in LaPorte. Marv and Jane served as coordinators of SIA (Seniors in action) at Countryside Christian Church.
On March 28, 1946, in LaPorte, he married Jane (Gourley) Goad, who survives.
Also surviving are his beloved daughters, Cynthia A. (Robert) Cutler of LaPorte and Kathleen D. (James) Abbott of Irons, MI; and four grandsons, Thaddeus (Laura) Cutler of LaPorte, Andrew Abbott of Chicago, Layton Cutler of Los Angeles and Dr. Matthew (Holly) Abbott of Ann Arbor, MI.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, with Pastor Roger Ash and Pastor Jeff Hines officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until the service.
