Mr. George Lewis Hart, 84, of Columbus, IN, died July 10, 2013, at Our Hospice of Central Indiana in Columbus.

He was born July 14, 1928, in Michigan City, IN, to Charles and Elizabeth (Ball) Hart.

Enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps at age 17, George was proud of his service in China, where he rebuilt bridges following World War II. He remained an avid member of the China Marine Corps, attending numerous reunions throughout his life. Many a family event found George entertaining with stories of his years spent overseas. George was an avid fisherman all his life, with regular trips to Canada and throughout the Midwest. Having lived his adult life by the water, his grandchildren fondly remember him teaching them to bait a hook and fish. George was also an aspiring golfer and he kept the scorecards for 40 years to prove it. But most importantly, he taught all his grandchildren the importance of showing up, as he was a dedicated regular at their softball, soccer, baseball and football games and practices. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Cecelia Martin Hart; stepchildren, Steven John Martin (Gretchen Anderson) and Michelle Martin Colman (David), of Bloomington, IN, and Kevin John Martin (Patricia) of Indianapolis; his adoring grandchildren, Gabriel, Sam and Emily Colman and Helen and Zechariah Martin; his sister, Margaret Muinch (William) of South Bend, IN; and brother, John Patrick Hart of New York City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Mary Graham, Helen Louise Simonson, Catherine Hart and Patricia Kohne.

A graveside service with full military honors will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 13, at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte, with Deacon Chris Hawkins officiating. Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.
