Gordon Kuchel, 1937-2013

Gordon Lee Kuchel, 75, of LaPorte, died peacefully Thursday, May 30, 2013, at his home.

He was born May 31, 1937, in LaPorte to Willi O. and Grete (Schmidt) Kuchel.

Gordon worked as a printer, starting at Don Sensow Printing, then working as a printer/pressman apprentice at The Town Crier. He retired from The Gary Post-Tribune as a printer after almost 40 years. After his retirement he worked part time at Master Roll Manufacturing Company. Gordon was a member of First United Methodist Church in LaPorte, where he was a trustee, led the current events class, served as usher, and helped prepare for the church’s semi-annual rummage and treasure sale, where he made coffee and was sure to eat Connie’s sloppy joes. He was a special deputy with the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department and belonged to the Lake Patrol. Gordon was also a model airplane hobbyist and served as treasurer of the Northern Indiana Modelers.

On June 2, 1956, he married Mary Sue (Ginther) Kuchel, who survives.

Also surviving are their beloved children, Debbie Bell of LaPorte and Glenn W. (Sherrie) Kuchel of Orland Park, IL; grandson, Joshua Kuchel; granddaughter, Sarah Kuchel; sister, Kathryn Bass of New Buffalo, MI; four nieces and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 3, at the Chapel of First United Methodist Church, 1225 Michigan Ave., LaPorte, IN 46350, with Rev. Evan Lash officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Monday from 11 a.m. until the service. Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Lorraine Dilworth, 1929-2013

Lorraine T. Dilworth, 84, of LaPorte, died Thursday, May 30, 2013, at IU Health LaPorte Hospital.

She was born in Michigan City, IN, on April 28, 1929, to Herman and Carrie (Lau) Tiebert.

Following her retirement from the LaPorte County Juvenile Probation Department, Lorraine worked as the secretary at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in LaPorte for many years. She dedicated her life to her family and the church. She held a deep love for music and enjoyed attending concerts in the community. She was a member of Tri Kappa and the Community Concert Association.

On Oct. 2, 1948, she married James Dilworth, who preceded her in death on Dec. 5, 1993.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; brother, Harold Tiebert, and sister, Mildred Van Sant.

Lorraine is survived by her beloved children: daughter, Jennifer A. (Tom) Wood of New Mexico; and son, James K. (Linda) Dilworth of Illinois; four grandchildren, Alexandra (Ben) Martinsen, Travis Wood, Christopher Dilworth and Emily Dilworth; two brothers, Daniel and Calvin Tiebert; special niece, Sue (Michael) O’Leary; and several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 3, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with Father Thomas Kincaid officiating. Visitation will be at the church Monday from 9 a.m. until the service. Burial will take place following the service at Greenwood Cemetery in Michigan City.

Ruth Mitch, 1927-2013

Mrs. Ruth Opel Mitch, 86, of LaPorte, died Monday, May 27, 2013, at Golden Living Center-Countryside, LaPorte.

She was born May 17, 1927, in LaPorte to Charles and Lilly I. (Kimmel) Wiltfong.

Ruth had lived in Des Moines, Iowa for 36 years. She worked for seven years as a registered nurse for New Oaks Care Center.

She is survived by two sisters, Betsy Stevens of LaPorte and Frona Willis of Tempe, AZ.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, sister Mary Freese and four brothers.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on  Tuesday, June 4, from 9 to 11 a.m. A life celebration will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Jesse Moore officiating. Interment will follow at Springville Cemetery, LaPorte.

Stephen Holdeman Sr., 1939-2013

img001Mr. Stephen H. Holdeman Sr., 74, of LaPorte, died June 1, 2013, at 1:06 a.m. at IU Health LaPorte Hospital.

He was born April 30, 1939, in Goshen, IN, to Roscoe and Adah (Cripe) Holdeman and had lived in Fish Lake for 40 years.

Stephen was an U.S. Army career man, had been a truck driver for several years and was chief inspector for New York Blower. He was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of Fish Lake American Legion Post 400, a member and former president of Fish Lake Conservation Club, and was a Lincoln Township volunteer fireman for 25 years. He enjoyed traveling with his wife.

On June 30, 1959, in Bordeaux, France, he married Suzanne Dusser, who survives.

He is also survived by one daughter, Sheila Howe of Naples, FL; two sons, Lt. Col. Stephen H. (Crystal) Holdeman Jr. of Ft. Belvoir, VA, and Patrick J. (Janice) Holdeman of South Bend, IN; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; 10 nieces; and 11 nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Christine Holdeman; and one brother, James Holdeman.

A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, June 5, at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Fish Lake with Rev. Michael Heimer officiating. Visitation will be at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, on Monday, June 4, from 3 to 7 p.m. and on Tuesday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in New Paris Cemetery following the Mass, with military honors conducted at the cemetery by the Indiana Army National Guard.

Cummings, Connie Photo obitConnie Mae (Barnes) Cummings, 50, of Rolling Prairie, IN, died Thursday, May 30, 2013, at IU Health LaPorte Hospital.

She was born in LaPorte on Dec. 22, 1962, to Dale and Joyce (Kebr) Barnes.

Connie graduated from New Prairie High School in 1981 and attended Oklahoma State University. She worked as a water quality supervisor at Mishawaka Utilities from 2001 through 2009. She enjoyed needlepoint, cross-stitch, gardening and flower arranging. She loved her kids and grandkids very much.

On Oct. 4, 1982, she married Patrick B. Cummings, who survives.

Also surviving are her beloved children, Joshua Cummings of LaPorte, Tonya (Lee) Hansen of Champaign, IL, and Nicholas Cummings of Panama City, FL; grandsons, Noah Cummings and Beau Hansen; her parents, Dale and Joyce Barnes of Rolling Prairie; her brothers, Gary Barnes and Ed (Cindy) Barnes; her sisters, Bonnie (Don) Stoner and Darlene Barnes, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, on Monday, June 3, from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Tuesday, June 4, from 9 to 10 a.m. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Rev. Frank Endres officiating. Burial will follow the service at Foster Cemetery, Rolling Prairie.

Terry Haas Sr., 1950-2013

Terry Haas Sr 001Terry Lee Haas Sr., 62, of LaPorte, died peacefully at 5:50 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2013, at his home.

He was born Aug. 6, 1950, in Cincinnati, OH.

Terry worked for ArcelorMittal, Burns Harbor, for 43 years. He honorably served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Terry was a gun enthusiast and held a Federal Firearms Dealers License (FFL). He enjoyed coin collecting and spending time with his family.

On July 4, 1969, in New Buffalo, MI, he married his wife of 43 years, Teresa Haas, who survives.

Also surviving are his mother, Mildred Woodrum of Cincinnati, OH; five children, Terry (Angie) Haas of Michigan City, IN, Tim (Jen) Haas of LaPorte, Tracey of Michigan City, and Tyler and Zack Haas, both of LaPorte; three sisters, Connie Bazemore of Westville, IN, Patricia Saul of Tucumcari, NM, and Gloria Leasaw of California; three brothers, Ronald and Gary Haas and John Woodrum, all of Cincinnati; and seven grandchildren.

His brother, Tom Haas, preceded him in death.

There will be no services. Cremation will take place. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Dan Butler Photo 001Dan L. Butler, 55, of Rolling Prairie, IN, died Sunday, June 2, 2013, at Memorial Hospital of South Bend, IN.

He was born in LaPorte on July 14, 1957, to Carney Sr. and Donna (Newland) Butler.

Dan was the president and union organizer of Indiana Carpenters Union Local 1485. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, motorcycles and especially riding his Harley. Dan also enjoyed spending time with his children.

Surviving are his daughters, Paige Butler of LaPorte and Kristen Merrill of New Carlisle, IN; his son, Kyle Merrill of LaPorte; his mother, Donna Butler of Rolling Prairie; sisters, Patty (Tim) Swanson of LaPorte and Phyllis (John) Benson of Rolling Prairie; brother, Carney (Sandy) Butler Jr. of LaPorte; sister, Sherry (Bob) Younggreen of LaCrosse, IN; grandfather, Eugene Newland of Rolling Prairie; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and grandmother, Sophia Newland.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, June 7, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, with Rev. Curtis Southwood officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 6 p.m.

Delphine MooreMrs. Delphine Jennie Moore, 80, of LaPorte, died Sunday, June 2, 2013, at Golden Living Center Fountainview in LaPorte.

She was born Aug. 4, 1932, in LaPorte to Henry Carlson and Alvina (LeBlanc) Carlson Smith.

Delphine worked for 20 years at the Indiana Department of Transportation before retiring. She was a member of Assembly of God Church. Delphine was a 1951 graduate of LaPorte High School. She enjoyed crocheting, listening to music and going for walks.

On May 20, 1967, in New Buffalo, MI, she married David J. Moore, who preceded her in death Sept. 28, 1998.

Delphine was also preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Andre Propes and David Moore Jr.; her stepfather; and a sister-in-law.

She is survived by her daughter, Laurida Arion of Rockville, IN; five grandchildren, Christopher (Sommer) Griffin of LaPorte, Jason (Christine) Griffin of LaPorte, Marek Konieczny of LaPorte, Brandon Propes of Iowa and Angela Propes of LaPorte; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Roy Carlson of Huron, SD, and Ray Carlson of Palo Cedro, CA; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Wednesday, June 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday, June 6, from 10 to 11 a.m. A life celebration will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Jeff Hines officiating. Interment will follow at Patton Cemetery, LaPorte.

Anna GomezAnna Marie Gomez, 44, of LaPorte, died peacefully at 8:40 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2013, at IU Health LaPorte Hospital.

She was born Aug. 10, 1968, in Columbus, OH, to John and Mary (Pickering) Newcomb.

Anna enjoyed caring for and helping others.

Surviving are her siblings, Sharon (Harley) Newcomb-Morgan, Vernon Newcomb and Tony (Angie) Newcomb, all of Brenton, WV, and Michelle (Scott) Ryman of Columbus, OH; and many nieces and nephews, especially Andrew Newcomb and Quinton and Tessa Ryman.

Her parents preceded her in death.

A funeral celebrating her life will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 6, at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 p.m. until the service. Burial will be held at a later date in Mount Zion Cemetery, West Virginia.

Paul “Curly” Marshall, 82

A graveside service for Paul “Curly” Marshall, 82, of Greenhills, OH, and formerly of LaPorte, will take place Saturday, June 8, 2013, at 11:30 a.m. at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte, with Rev. Ronald Brauer officiating. A Celebration of Life will be held at First Methodist Church Fellowship Room, LaPorte at 12:30 p.m. following the graveside service.

Mr. Marshall died Nov. 9, 2012.

Full military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the LaPorte Honor Guard. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Andrew Weber, 1995-2013

Andrew WeberAndrew Phillip Weber, 17, of Union Mills, IN, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at IU Health LaPorte Hospital.

He was born Sept. 30, 1995, in LaPorte to Donald Weber and Kimberly Mooi Burns.

Andrew was a student at LaPorte High School and played varsity tennis for the LaPorte Slicers. He loved all sports. As a young boy, Andrew played Pop Warner football, which was his first love. He wore number 18 on his jersey and was proud to be the starting quarterback. He played many years in Little League in LaPorte and Kingsbury and enjoyed music. Andrew loved the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos because of his love for Peyton Manning, and also enjoyed University of Kentucky Basketball. He was a member of First Church of God, LaPorte.

Surviving are his mother, Kimberly Mooi Burns and his “dad,” Larry Burns, both of LaPorte; his “father,” Donald Weber of New Carlisle, IN; one sister, Gabrielle Weber of LaPorte; one brother, Donald Weber II of LaPorte; his maternal grandparents, Chuck (Barb) Mooi of Michigan City, IN; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and his girlfriend, Karlee Wolford of LaPorte.

Preceding him in death were his paternal grandparents, Gerald and Darlene Weber, and one cousin, Keri Alyce Mooi, who died in 1989.

A funeral celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 8, at First Church Of God, LaPorte, with Pastor Jeff Zigler officiating. Visitation will be at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, on Friday, June 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the service. Entombment will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Michigan City.

Ethan Z. Day, 20, of LaPorte, died unexpectedly at 6:41 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at his home.

He was born Dec. 17, 1992, in Michigan City, IN.

Ethan loved music, played guitar and participated in the LaPorte High School Marching Band and choir. He also enjoyed playing video games and was a Chicago Bears fan. Ethan attended Agape Christian Church, LaPorte.

Surviving are his parents, Chris and Toni Day of LaPorte; two sisters, Brooke Day and Corissa Singleton, both of Logansport, IN; two brothers, Trevor Day of LaPorte and Austin Day of Logansport; grandparents, Theresa McFarland of LaPorte, Dan and Karen Day of LaPorte, and Carol and Ted Lake of Buchanan, MI; great-grandmother, Betty Day of Westville, IN; and his grandmother Carol’s son Ron Scott.

Visitation will be Sunday, June 9, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte. A private family service will be held at a later date.

Maxine Harris, 1921-2013

Maxine M. Harris, 91, of LaPorte, died Monday, June 3, 2013, at IU Health LaPorte Hospital.

She was born in Washington, Iowa, on Dec. 14, 1921, to George T. and Gladys (Crove) McKee.

Maxine was a homemaker and assisted part time in her husband’s dental office. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, a charter and a life member of LaPorte Hospital Auxiliary, a former member of Tri Kappa Association Chapter, and a former member of the Northwest Dental Auxiliary.

On June 14, 1941, in Hobart, IN, she married Dr. Paul P. Harris of LaPorte, who survives.

Also surviving are her beloved children, David (Kay) Harris of Lafayette, IN, and Paula Jean Harris of LaPorte.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

A private family Celebration of Life service was held Thursday, June 6, at Door Village Cemetery.

She was born in Gary, IN, on Sept. 18, 1945, to John and Evelyn Mihelic.

Nancy worked as a bank teller and an insurance secretary. She enjoyed sports (even got a hole in one once), reading, traveling, gardening, and playing with her grandchildren.

In August of 1967 she married John Vereb, who survives.

Also surviving are her beloved sons, John A. (Angie) Vereb, Jeffrey A. (Kimberly) Vereb and Jason A. (Randall) Vereb; brother, Ronald (Vicky ) Mihelic; grandsons, Harrison, Zachary and Jacob, and step-grandson, Connor; granddaughter, Katelyn, and step-granddaughter, Alayna.

She was preceded in death by her father.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday June 8, at 4 p.m. at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, with Pastor Everett Shattuck officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. A graveside service will be held at Calumet Park Cemetery on Monday, June 10, at 1 p.m.

Robert “Bob” Trevitt, 1944-2013

Mr. Robert E. “Bob” Trevitt, 68, of LaPorte, died Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at LaPorte Hospital.

He was born Nov. 14, 1944, in LaPorte to Everett and Ruth (Callandar) Trevitt.

Bob worked for over 20 years at Joy Manufacturing Co. in Michigan City before retiring. He enjoyed classic cars and car shows.

He is survived by his two sisters, Carol McDaniels of Walkerton, IN, and Sharon (Chester) Konopacki of LaPorte, and several nieces and nephews.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Allen.

The family will receive friends Monday, June 10, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte. A life celebration will be held at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Dan McDonald officiating. Interment will follow at Patton Cemetery, LaPorte.

img001Leotie Starr “Cricket” Julovich, 17, of LaPorte, died Tuesday evening at the home of her friend.

She was born Nov. 28, 1995, in Hammond, IN, to Pamela McClure and Monde Bustamante, having lived here for six years, coming from Dyer, IN.

Cricket was a high school student. She was lovable, energetic, optimistic, talented, intelligent, and enthusiastic. She’ll be loved and missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Pamela and Adam Julovich of LaPorte; two brothers, Kaled and Austin Julovich of LaPorte; maternal grandmother, Rita McClure of Dyer, IN; maternal grandfather, Robert (Carol) McClure of Whiting, IN; maternal great-grandmother, Veronika McClure of Billett, IL; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her maternal great-grandfather, Walter McClure.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, on Saturday, June 8, at 4:30 p.m. with Pastor Roger Ash officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Jack Childers Sr., 1938-2013

Jack Childers 001Jack Leroy Childers Sr., 75, of LaPorte, died peacefully at 2:24 a.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at Franciscan Community Services Hospice.

He was born Feb. 24, 1938, in Beaver Dam, KY. He was the adopted son of Roosevelt and Clemmer Childers.

Jack worked for The Levy Co. as a maintenance electrician. After 29 years of service, he retired in March 2001. He was a member of Midwest Operating Engineers Local 150, Acme Lodge 83 and Elks Lodge 432. Jack enjoyed machinery and taking care of his properties and his renters, who dearly loved him. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.

On Feb. 2, 1986, in Michigan City, IN, he married Darlene Kellogg, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Jack Childers Jr. of LaPorte and David Childers of San Antonio, TX; and one sister, Marge Kruger of Kentucky.

There will be no services. Cremation will take place. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

John Berzanskis Sr., 1923-2013

John F. Berzanskis, Sr., 90, of Rolling Prairie, IN, died Sunday, June 2, 2013, at Brentwood Senior Living Center, LaPorte.

John was born in Chicago on March 3, 1923, to Jonas and Onna (Tolenitis) Berzanskis. He spent most of his life in Chicago, where he raised his family and began the family business AMS Mechanical Systems. At the age of 55 he and his wife Mary Ann (Shilney), who preceded him in death on May 5, 1998, moved to Kona, Hawaii, where he spent 32 wonderful years and became known for his strong work ethic, entrepreneurial nature and large but gentle handshake. John relocated to Rolling Prairie in 2010 and spent his remaining years close to his children and grandchildren.

John served his country in World War II as a member of the Merchant Marines.

Surviving are his beloved daughters, Janine (Herman) Meyers and Judith (Cook) Berzanskis both of LaPorte; his son, John F. (Sandy) Berzanskis Jr. of Palos Park, IL; friend and caretaker, Nikki Shafer; grandchildren, Jennifer (Marc) Heniser, Patrick (Erin) Baugh, Jake (Jenny) Baugh, Jamyn (Dave) Simonik, McGee (Michael) Jacobson, Domini and John Robert Berzanskis; and 17 great-grandchildren.

There will be no public funeral service. A small private memorial service for the family will be scheduled at a later date. The Berzanskis family is asking that you keep their father and family in your prayers. Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Kelly Williams, 87, of LaPorte, died peacefully at Golden Living Center, LaPorte, on Saturday, June 8, 2013.

He was born Feb. 10, 1926, to Jesse and Emma (Young) Williams.

Kelly was a member of the World Wide Church of God. He retired from the Indiana State Highway Department in Porter County and also worked at Howmet in the security department.

On July 21, 1956, in Fairborn, OH, he married Christine Howard, who survives.

Also surviving are daughters, Anita (Ray) Davis and Dema (John) Furaitor, both of LaPorte, and Rita (Paul) Finazzo of Valparaiso, IN; son, Kelly S. (Michelle) Williams of Rolling Prairie, IN; granddaughters, Kim (Tyrell) Roberts, Kelli (James Metcalf) Davis, and Angela, Jessica and Olivia Williams; grandsons, Ray (Alice Walters) Davis Jr. and Paul Finazzo Jr.; great-grandchildren, Miranda Ritchie, Madison and Chloe Roberts, Christopher Ritchie and James Metcalf Jr.; sister-in-law, Jane Howard; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Rufus, Russell, Preston, Johnny and Biram Williams; and sisters, Dema Jones and Nancy Williams.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, with Rev. Rufus Williams and Pastor Tim Williams officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, June 10, and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday. Burial will follow the service at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

McCorkel, Barbara Jean Obit PhotoBarbara Jean McCorkel died June 8, 2013, in LaPorte.

She was born to Herman and Martha (Lilly) Noel on Aug. 5, 1943, in Lexington, KY. The family moved to LaPorte County in 1953.

Barbara attended Mill Creek High School, where she was a cheerleader. She acquired a Certified Nurse’s Aide License in LaPorte County and was employed at Fountainview Nursing Home in LaPorte for 15 years. She was also employed at the VNA for hospice caregiving in LaPorte County and in Stuart, FL.

She is survived by her husband of 15 years, Larry McCorkel; two daughters, Debbie Hazelbaker Riggs and Angie Hazelbaker Conlin; two granddaughters, Nicole Conlin Losiniecki and Leslie Kahn; a great-grandson, Timothy Losiniecki Jr.; brothers, Don, Charles, Bill, Ken and Larry Noel; sisters, Lucy Mize, Margaret Dial, Bernie Yerby and Peggy Gladden; a niece, Beverly Dean Jennette; and a son-in-law, Randy Conlin.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Ernest, Herman Jr. and Bob Noel; a sister, Joyce Whilhelm; and a grandson, Billy Kahn.

A private family gathering in Barbara’s honor will be held at a later date. Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.
