Alvin Paul “Pete” Luther, 98, of LaPorte, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015, at Golden Living Center Fountainview Terrace, LaPorte.
He was born Feb. 4, 1917, in LaPorte to William and Louise (Kepplin) Luther.
Alvin was a 1936 graduate of LaPorte High School. He worked as a civil engineer for LTV Steel Company for 25 years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Pete was a longtime bowler and was inducted into the LaPorte Bowling Hall of Fame. He was the first LaPorte Slicer basketball MVP in 1936 and was captain of the team. Pete ushered at United Methodist Church for many years. He loved to golf, especially at Beechwood Golf Course in LaPorte.
On July 21, 1940, he married Vivian McCorkel, who preceded him in death in 2003.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and two sisters.
Surviving are his sons, Thomas M. (Marlyn) Luther and Mike (Kathy) Luther, both of LaPorte; grandchildren, Kevin (Amy) Luther, Kimberly (Marc) Christiano and Robin (Patrick) Kubit, all of LaPorte, and Erik (Kathy) Luther and Marcie (Keith) Moore, both of Indianapolis; and great-grandchildren, Emily Luther, Drew Luther, Caleb Luther, Benjamin Luther, Megan Jerndt, Meghan Pointon, Brooklyn Luther, Zach Luther, Reece Luther, Brynnley Luther, Blaine Kubit, and Kasey Kubit.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, with Rev. Evan Lash officiating. Visitation will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. until the service. A cremation committal has taken place.
