Martha Ann “Mattie” Benn, daughter of Donald W. and Phyliss A. Benn, died in LaPorte in her sleep of complications related to dementia on July 12, 2013.
She was born June 2, 1950, grew up in LaPorte and graduated in 1968 from LaPorte High School. Mattie received a bachelor’s degree in forestry from Michigan State University in 1976 and moved to the state of Washington, where she lived her adult life. She especially loved hiking and camping in the Cascade Mountains. She graduated from nursing school in 1992 and worked in that capacity until 2005.
She is survived by her brothers David (Judith Pedersen) and Sam (Kelly); her sister Ruth (Ed Hedemann); and nephews Chris, Chad and Tyler Benn.
The family thanks the staff of Brentwood Memory Care and gives heartfelt thanks to Joanie Mathis for brightening Mattie’s days over the last three years.
