Arthur Mathias, 79, of Dunedin, Fla., passed away on Sept. 21, 2021, in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Arthur (“Art” or “Butch”) was born in Michigan City, Ind., to Arthur and Margaret (Yeaney) Mathias on July 31, 1942. He graduated from La Porte High School, La Porte, Ind. He worked as a technical writer for Whirlpool Corporation in La Porte for 35 years before retiring to Tampa, Fla.
Art was a sportsman – fishing, hunting, golf, bowling, basketball, and baseball were some of his favorites. He also enjoyed drawing, taking his grandchildren to Busch Gardens, playing Yahtzee, completing Sudoku puzzles and watching game shows, especially Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy and Price Is Right. He was a fan of the Bucs, the Lightning and the Rays and enjoyed watching them bring championships to the city.
Art was preceded in death by his parents, sister Patricia Janosky, brother Mike Mathias, and nephew Brian Janosky.
Art is survived by his daughters, Julie (Jeff) Van Liew of Bradenton, Fla., and Janet (Bob) Archer of La Porte; grandchildren, Kyle Van Liew and Jessica Van Liew; niece, Terri Wisler; nephew, Jason (Kelly) Mathias; and cousins, Claudia Green, Sheila Fikes and Diana Hunt.
A gathering of family and friends in Celebration of Art’s Life will be held Wednesday, Nov. 24, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Haverstock Funeral Home, La Porte.
Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association in Art’s memory.
Art’s family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the staff of Mease Countryside Hospital in Safety Harbor, Fla., and Bayfront Hospital in St. Petersburg for the compassion and care they extended to our dad and to us during his illness. We would also like to express our gratitude to the staff of Grand Villa of Dunedin, who welcomed Dad into their senior living community and made him a part of the Grand Villa family.
