Robert Lee Childress, 90, of La Porte, Ind., passed away Thursday, March 18, 2021, at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born March 18, 1931, in Paradise, Ky., to Everett Lee and Cynthia (Mason) Childress.
Robert proudly served as a corporal in the U.S. Army from July 1952 to June 1954. He was a millwright for many years at Bethlehem Steel. Robert enjoyed fishing, camping and gardening. He was a baseball fan, especially of the White Sox. He was a Scoutmaster and a Little League coach.
Robert will be fondly remembered as a loving husband and great father. He always made time for those he loved.
On Oct. 3, 1954, in La Porte, he married Gloria May Scholz, who survives.
Also surviving are his children, Scott (Susan) Childress of La Porte, Alan (Julie) Childress of La Porte, Paul (Carol) Childress of Porter, Ind., and Carol (Ronald) Hahn of Chicago; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother.
A Celebration of Life Service with Full Military Honors will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 24, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte, with Pastor Ronald Brauer Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, La Porte. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, and from 9 a.m. until the service Wednesday.
Anyone attending the visitation and/or service is required to wear a mask.
