Damon Marshall, 72, of La Porte, Ind., passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2021.
He was born Jan. 17, 1949, in North Judson, Ind., to A. Logan and Vina (Francis) Marshall.
Damon was a 1967 graduate of La Porte High School. He worked as a manager/bartender of the former Town Tavern in La Porte, and was a flooring contractor for many years.
Family was everything to Damon. It seemed like everyone he ran into was a distant relative, like a long-lost cousin. Always willing to help everyone, Damon also had friends everywhere he went. He played countless hours of pool, darts, and of course, cards. His poker buddies will remember his notorious way of losing a hand; some of those ripped-up cards will never be found!
In his younger years, Damon played sports and proudly told everyone the story of his basketball “national championship.” He coached his children’s softball and basketball teams while continuing to play league softball. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, especially at Talladega with his friends. He recently told his grandson that out of all sports teams, Notre Dame will always be his favorite. Damon loved to reminisce about the old times, telling stories to all who would listen. He loved family reunions, long drives, big Sunday dinners followed by crazy rummy or a game of 31, birthday celebrations, and making his Christmas morning breakfast: fried egg sandwiches.
Damon is survived by his children, Matt (Angela) Meeker of Bradenton, Fla., Jason Ryder of Hobart, Ind., Serena (Jason) Schmitz of Randolph, N.J., Brent Marshall of La Porte and Kyle Marshall of La Porte; 12 grandchildren, Lauren, Tyler, Kjerstine, Phoenix, Logan, Jackson, Viktor, Brennan, Rune, Ender, Brynnley, and Baker; siblings, Dennis (Joann) Marshall of Ash Flat, Ark., Steve (Cheryl) Marshall of Cherokee Village, Ark., and Debbie (Dick) Tostenson of Park Rapids, Minn.; beloved nieces and nephews; and his former wife and good friend, Vicki Marshall of La Porte.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, La Porte, is handling arrangements.
