James “Dink” Riley Umphrey, 1965-2020

James “Dink” Riley Umphrey, 55, of Smyrna, Tenn. passed away Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2020 in Tennessee.

He was born Jan. 24, 1965 in La Porte, Ind. to James R. Sr. and Sharon K. (Chlebowski) Umphrey.

James lived in the La Porte area until the age of 23, when he moved to Tennessee. He served in the United States Army from 1984 to 1989. He worked for Bridgestone in Lavergn, Tenn. for many years before retiring from FED-EX in Murfreesboro.  He loved fishing and watching Tennessee football, but his biggest joy was his family, whom he cherished.

Survivors include his mother, Sharon Nell; daughter, Stephanie Carol Umphrey of Smyrna; brothers, Michael Umphrey of La Porte and Shawn Donahoe of Wisconsin; sister, Lisa (John) Cox of Smyrna; adopted children, Madison, Taylor, Aubrey and Daniel, all of Murfreesboro;  life-long love, Teresa (Henley) Umphrey; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father on July 15, 1977; step-father, Robert Nell, in 2018; and nephew, Dallas Donahoe, in 2003.

A graveside service will be held at noon Saturday, Sept. 26 with military honors at Pine Lake Cemetery.  A celebration of James’s life will follow from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Loyal Order of Moose, 925 Boyd Blvd, La Porte.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sharon Nell.
