Margaret Frances Hiler, August 11, 1920 – October 12, 2017

Margaret Frances Hiler – Fran to most everybody – was born and died at home. Over 97 years separated those two days, as did a lifetime of significant experiences, encounters, friendships, shared plans and shared values. Fran grew up during the Great Depression, lived through the events of World War II, married the love of her life, raised four children, and adored her ten grandchildren and five great-grandsons.

Fran was born August 11, 1920, in a classic two flat in Chicago. Her parents, Patrick and Lucy (Pendergast) Malloy, were Irish immigrants who passed through the gates of Ellis Island with hopes and dreams of a better life in America. Patrick worked as a Chicago street car motorman while Lucy raised three young daughters – Fran and her sisters, Mary and Patty.

Growing up in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood, Fran attended parochial school, spending her elementary years at St. Carthage before graduating from Loretto High School in 1939. She met Bob Hiler – a handsome young engineer – on a blind date arranged by a dear friend shortly after graduation. They married in Chicago on October 31, 1942.  Sensing opportunity, the couple moved from Chicago to Walkerton, Indiana, in 1953, with their three young sons in tow. Bob joined his father and brother at Charles O. Hiler & Son Foundry, and for sixteen years Fran grew accustomed to small-town life while raising the boys and their little sister.

In 1969, the Hiler family moved to LaPorte, Indiana, where Fran made her home for the next 48 years. She and Bob embraced their new community and found many opportunities to provide both time and treasure to area charitable organizations. They formed special friendships, embarked on travels, and enjoyed bridge clubs, supper clubs – as well as numerous political dinners and functions during their son John’s time in office.

Fran shared her every thought, feeling, and plan with her husband Bob for nearly fifty years. When he suddenly passed away January 21, 1992, the landscape of Fran’s existence changed dramatically, but she ably adapted to her new life. Fran delved deeper into her philanthropic pursuits, shepherded her growing family, and continued to spend winters at her home in Naples, Florida. In these latter years came moments of great joy and times of deep loss and sadness. Fran welcomed more grandchildren and great-grandchildren into her family, just as she lost many close friends and family members, including her son Bob.

Fran enjoyed life. She cherished her family, delighted in her friendships, and found fulfillment in her service to others. Fran loved cooking, bridge, crosswords, music, reading, and balancing her checkbook. She was congenial, fun-loving, generous and kind. Fran had a wonderful sense of humor and truly loved a good laugh (as well as a good cry from time to time). She was proud of her Irish heritage and true to her Catholic faith.

Fran is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Mary Murray, her beloved husband Bob, and her eldest son Bob Jr. She leaves her children Larry (Janet), John (Catherine), Tricia (Dan Luck), and her grandchildren Laura (Andy Moravej), Virginia (Joe Napoli), Alison, Caitlin (Jake Schott), Morgan, Conor, Haley, Erin, Meagan, and Brady, and great-grandsons Daniel, Michael, August, Orion, and Cedar.

Her sister Patty Keating, numerous nieces and nephews and their families, and a few devoted friends (the younger ones!) also survive Fran. She loved them all, and she knows they loved her.

Her children extend their sincere appreciation to Fran’s companion and caregiver Sophie Jedrysek and to the staff at the Center for Hospice Care.

The family will host an Irish Wake from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. (Eastern Time) on Wednesday, October 18, at The Brick, 1145 Northside Blvd., South Bend, IN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. (Eastern Time) on Thursday, October 19, in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. Private interment will be at the family mausoleum at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Unity Foundation of LaPorte County, P.O. Box 527, Michigan City, IN 46361; The Women’s Care Center, 512 Maple Avenue, LaPorte, IN 46350; or Hospice Foundation, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545-5234.

Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, is handling the arrangements for James “Jim” W. Lehner, 94, who entered peacefully into eternal rest surrounded by his family on September 3, 2017, at the Catherine Kasper Life Center in Donaldson, Indiana.

The youngest of eight children, he was born December 24, 1922, to Frank and Kathryn (Arnold) Lehner in Nekoosa, Wisconsin.

On February 26, 1949, Jim married Harriet M. Keenan at Sacred Heart Church, Nekoosa, Wisconsin. She preceded him in death in 2009, a few months after celebrating 60 years of marriage.

A natural athlete, Jim graduated from Alexander High School in Nekoosa where he enjoyed academics and playing sports. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted and proudly served his country in the United State Navy during World War II as an aircraft machinist mate working on Stearman and Corsair aircraft. On December 14, 1945, he separated from the military after being stationed on Saipan Island and returned to Nekoosa. Upon his return, he began and completed a four-year apprenticeship as a wood master patternmaker under the guidance of his brother Bernard. Jim became a master craftsman of this important trade, building industrial patterns for over 50 years. In 1953, he accepted employment with Conrad Pattern Corporation, LaPorte, Indiana, where he worked for 19 years while raising his family. He opened his own business, Lehner Pattern Corporation, in 1980. He used to joke that if he didn’t like the boss all he had to do was to look in the mirror and tell him so.

Jim was an inspiration in many ways to his family and friends. He enjoyed helping others whenever he could. Blessed with a quick wit, a funny sense of humor and an adventurous spirit, Jim was always involved in new hobbies and activities that included golfing, reading, gardening, tropical fish, airplane restoration, radio controlled airplanes, swimming, sailing, snow skiing, winemaking, cooking, clock building, traveling, bridge playing, LaPorte Slicer sports, and Green Bay Packers. He was an enthusiastic fan of his children, eagerly attending sporting events, music recitals, business ventures, 4-H and band concerts. He supported and encouraged each of them to develop their unique interests and talents.

He was honored to receive the Volunteer of the Year Award of the LaPorte YMCA, where he was a member for over 50 years. His past associations and memberships included LaPorte Aero Club, Knights of Columbus #1542, American Legion Post 83, VFW Post 1130, LaPorte Rotary Club, American Legion Honor Guard, Pattern Makers Union, and Beacon Hills Golf Course board of directors.

He enjoyed spending his final year at the Catherine Kasper Life Center in Donaldson, Indiana, where he soon became a favorite to many of the residents and staff. He loved the beautiful setting with its lakes and gardens and was able to attend daily Mass. Before moving to Donaldson, he lived at Brentwood Manor in LaPorte for seven years, where he continued many of the longtime friendships he has made while raising his family in LaPorte.

Jim and his wife Harriet were faithful members of St. Joseph Catholic Church, LaPorte, for over 65 years. He served as an usher and eucharistic minister. His faith was central in his life and he never missed attending Mass. He would remark that if you can’t give God one hour a week, something is wrong. It was important to him that his children receive good educations, beginning with parochial school and continuing through college.

Jim was a proud, loving, dedicated and beloved father to his six children who survive him. They include James W. (Dale) Lehner Jr., Battle Creek, Michigan; Ann Marie (Doug) Norman, Greeley, Colorado; Cynthia J. Dixon, Hanna, Indiana; Jeffry K. (Sandra) Lehner, The Woodlands, Texas; Rebecca (John F.) Ellis, Sedona, Arizona; and LtCol (ret) Christopher E. (Helen) Lehner, Camas, Washington. He cherished and felt blessed to be a grandfather to his thirteen grandchildren. They include Luke Lehner, Lori Lehner, Sean (Nora) Norman, Noah (Megan) Norman, Joel Norman, Maria (Lehner) (Marc Andre) Otto, Michael J. Lehner, Jessica (Ben) Ellis Maier, John Ellis Jr., Evan (Carly) Lehner, Alison Lehner, Bennett Lehner, and Caroline Lehner; and two great-grandchildren, Tierney M. Norman and Cillian S. Norman. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including Dean Rolzin of Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Frank, Bernard and Leon Lehner; and four sisters, Josephine Billings, Kathryn Lehner, Marie Rolzin and Charlotte Korbol.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Monday, October 23, 2017, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, LaPorte. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, October 23, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, LaPorte. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, LaPorte, with military honors.

A great guy died the other day. Of course, if he didn’t like you, you wouldn’t have experienced him this way, but you still would have respected him. How could you have not?

A life well and thoroughly lived, he served in the military after being given the choice of that or jail by area police for drag racing, hooliganism and running amok. He served wholeheartedly with the Army 10th Infantry in Wuerzburg, Germany, in Operation Gyroscope, earning an Honorable Discharge on February 17, 1963. When not defending the USA, he played soccer and raced tanks.

On December 16, 1957, he married his soulmate, Winona Bilderback, to whom he would devote 60 years. Together they raised five challenging children to believe in The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit. They all turned out just fine because of his patience, knowledge and love.

Mustangs were a love … always had one for show and racing. Shiny cars with all the bells and whistles, all the gadgets to keep them that way and many trophies to prove it.

Ken worked at Bethlehem Steel in Burns Harbor as a General Manager for 40 years, retiring a few years before they went belly up. Smart guy, kept his pension, investments and health benefits, which proved invaluable in the last couple years of his life.

This man will be missed, no way around that. Most especially by: Winona Struss, Janie (Bruce) Galko, Tia (Rick) Miscik, Kurt (Shelly) Struss, Susan (Doug) Helwig, and Eric (Jill) Struss. Grandchildren Steven (Pauline) L. Price, Brittany Struss, Abbey (Jason) Hedrick, Gabe (Paige) Struss, Rebekah Struss, Collin Struss, Morgan Struss, Mia Struss. Great-grandchildren Madison Price, Malorie Price, Ameliya Price, Kosta Karagianakis, Riley Karagianakis, Gracelynn Hedrick, and Mason Hedrick.

Ken donated his body to The Indiana University School of Medicine.

Ken’s soul was welcomed by his parents, Dolly and Russ; another mother, Marie; sister Patricia; son-in-law Bruce; many family and friends.

A private family dinner will be held at Christo’s Family Restaurant in LaPorte, IN, on October 29 from 3 p.m.–5 p.m.
