Harold Neukam, 1938-2017

Mr. Harold L. Neukam, 78, of Rolling Prairie, IN, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017, at Hamilton Communities, New Carlisle, IN.

He was born Sept. 15, 1938, in Portersville, IN, to Leland Neukam and Rosa (Tabor) Neukam Tedrow.

Harold retired in 1993 after 31 years of service with the Indiana State Police, achieving the rank of sergeant. He was in charge of school bus inspection for the Lowell Post. After retirement he worked at Purdue North Central as a security officer. He was a member of First Christian Church of Rolling Prairie, FOP, Indiana State Police Alliance and Indiana State Police Pioneers. He enjoyed working on cars.

On April 7, 1980, in Rolling Prairie, he married Shirlene Houseknecht Smith Neukam, who survives.

He is also survived by his mother, Rosa Tedrow; sons, Terry Neukam and Michael T. Neukam; daughter, Theresa O. McCormick; stepdaughter, Tammera (Harry) Rinker; stepson, Martin C. (Patricia) Smith; sisters, Linda Thomas and Beverly Meehan; brother, Gary D. Neukam; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Harold was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, Donald E. Neukam and Roger K. Neukam.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Wednesday, Jan. 25, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Thursday, Jan. 26, from 1 to 2 p.m. A life celebration will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. John A. Haferkamp officiating.

Ellen C. Volk, 1922-2017

Ellen Conboy Volk died peacefully on Jan. 21, 2017.

She was born Jan. 14, 1922, in Wanatah, IN, to Charles P. and Ethel Lee Conboy.

Ellen was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wanatah, where she served as parish secretary for many years. Ellen had a great love for her God, continually searching for wisdom and truth. She shared her faith openly.  

Ellen was appointed by Judge Alban Smith and served diligently on the LaPorte County School Reorganization Committee, which resulted, among other things, in the formation of the South Central Community School Corporation. Throughout her life, she was active in many community organizations.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward G. Volk, and one son, Michael P. Volk.

Ellen is survived by three children, Edward L. Volk of LaPorte, Barbara E. (Tom) Leek of Indianapolis and Mary A. (Mark) Horst of Burlington, KY. She was blessed as the grandmother of eight and the great-grandmother of 14. She had two great-great-grandchildren.   

Friends may call at Wanatah Funeral Chapel between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 25. A funeral Mass will be said the same day at 1:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Wanatah.

Arthur Johnson Jr., 1934-2017

Arthur Harold Johnson Jr., 82, of Westville, IN, died at 5:10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20, 2017, at Hospice Franciscan Communities, Michigan City, IN.

He was born Nov. 3, 1934, in Chicago to Arthur Harold Johnson Sr. and Lillian Elsie (Seeling) Johnson.

Arthur honorably served his country in the National Guard, then was transferred to the Armored United States Army Reserve. He also served in the Ready Reserve after his service in the USAR. Arthur was a past member of the Michigan City Power Squadron, current 55-year member of Westville Masonic Lodge 192, 1961 co-founder of Midwest Steel Federal Credit Union, and a manager and coach for Westville Little League from the late 1960s to the mid-1970s. He retired from Midwest Steel Corporation in 1988. Arthur was a collector of antiques.

On Aug. 27, 1955, at the Lutheran Church in Valparaiso, IN, he married Dixie Dene (Claussen) Johnson, who died almost a year ago on Jan. 31, 2016, after their 61 years of marriage.

Also preceding him in death were his parents; a stillborn son in 1956; son, Eugene Dale Johnson; daughter-in-law, Diane (Terry) Johnson; sister, Arlene Lillian Johnson; grandson, Andrew Eugene Johnson; and step-grandson, Landon Goldston.

Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, David Alan (Susan Lachiewicz) Johnson of LaPorte, Richard Lane (Kathleen Vance) Johnson of Lantana, TX, Sandy Reeves of Union Mills, IN, Stephen Dane (Terri Goodall) Johnson of Albia, IA, James Paul (Jennifer Bramblett) Johnson of Louisville, KY, and Michael Carl (Carey Goldenstern) Johnson of LaPorte; 18 grandchildren; one great-grandchild, Kamille; many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; niece, Melissa Boatwright; many friends; close friends, Bill and Diane Mondt, Emil and Lora Wolpink, Bob and Bonnie Kolasa, and Bill and Linda Rinker; and his favorite pets, Bonnie, Topper, Harley, Tobi and Lacy.

Cremation will take place. A private burial along with his wife, Dixie Dene Johnson, will take place in Westville Cemetery. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Patricia Allen, 1926-2017

Patricia B. Allen, 90, died peacefully Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017, at her home.

She was born Oct. 11, 1926, in LaPorte to George and Aleen (Silvey) Barker.

Patricia graduated from LaPorte High School in 1944 and was a dedicated homemaker. She enjoyed simply being with people, especially her family.

On Sept. 6, 1947, in LaPorte, she married Bina Jack Allen, who preceded her in death on June 12, 2008.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and two daughters, Judith Richards and Laura Allen.

Surviving are her son, Pat (Barbara) Allen of New Carlisle, IN; grandchildren, Lucas (Stephanie) Allen, Sarah (Nicholas) Hoff, Katherine (Aaron) Thiele, Meagan (Austin) Cabello, Nicholas (Joanna) Allen, Hannah Allen, Andrew Richards, and Amy Richards; and eight great-grandchildren.

A cremation committal has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte.  A private family service will take place at a later date.

Robb French, 1951-2017

Robb Kimbro French, 65, of Hamlet, IN, died peacefully at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, at Hospice Franciscan Communities, Michigan City, IN.

He was born Aug. 15, 1951, in Spencer, IA, to Charles and Robilee (Tate) French.

Robb was a man of service. He honorably served his country in the United States Army, serving during the Vietnam, Korea and Grenada wars, and as a Senior Military Policeman, receiving several commendations. Robb also served in the National Guard in Iowa and Indiana, where he was recognized for his marksmanship skills and received the Top Gun Award. Robb attended New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and was owner/operator of Mr. Frank restaurant in Arnolds Park, IA. He also received an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Iowa Lakes Community College. He served as Assistant Chief of Police in Dixon County, NE; was an EMT in Iowa and worked for the National Park Service as a Park Ranger at the Indiana Dunes. He retired after 27 years as a Correctional Officer at Indiana State Prison and Westville Prison. He was the 2nd Vice Commander of the American Legion, Kingsford Heights, IN, and was a site coordinator for Foodbank of Northern Indiana. Robb and his wife, Ann, were owners and operators of Legacy Pet Rescue and Sanctuary. Robb was a HAM radio operator, enjoyed fishing and hunting, and loved his pets dearly.

On Feb. 1, 2013, in LaPorte County, he married Ann (Bentley) French, who survives.

Also surviving are his stepson, Philip Gatch, his late wife’s son.

Preceding him in death were his parents and his late wife, Arlene French.

A Celebration of Robb’s Life gathering will be held Jan. 28 at Kingsford Heights American Legion, 500 Grayson Rd., Kingsford Heights, IN, beginning at noon. Burial will take place at Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso, IN, at a later date. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Emogene Koehn, 1928-2017

Emogene H. Koehn, 88, died at 11:49 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017, at LaPorte Hospital.  

She was born Oct. 30, 1928, in Monticello, KY, to Osber and Lola (Denny) Arthur. She has lived in LaPorte most of her life.  

Mrs. Koehn loved to sew, cook and bake. Her family was her life.

On July 1, 1947, in LaPorte, she was united in marriage to John W. Koehn, who preceded her in death May 20, 2007.  

Also preceding her in death were her parents; two sons-in-law, Gary Singleton and Marcus Moore; one sister, Lorene Herrin; and one brother, Herman Arthur.  

Mrs. Koehn is survived by her six children, David Koehn, Melody Singleton, Jerry (Pam) Koehn, Donna (Vernon) Berg, Mark (Pam) Koehn, and Scott (Deion) Koehn, all of LaPorte; 14 grandchildren, Lisa (Bill) Evans, Jenifer (Archie) Hill, Jeri-Lyn (Brian) Favia, Jonathan (Carrie) Koehn, Crystal (Chris) Berg, G.J. (Megan) Singleton, Marcus Koehn, Geney (Dale) Beghtel, Melissa (Adam) West, Jake Koehn, Mathew Koehn, Bill (Christy) Michiaels Jr., Jill (Tom) Ross, and Cami (Dan) Kruger; and 27 great-grandchildren, Dylan, Blake, Devyn, Trevor, Madilyn, Jared, Parker, Madisyn, Jaden, Xander, Ellie, Kylie, Kharmin, Mason, Aubree, Alyssa, Ella, Ryder, Tre, Jerry, Bryson, Jonah, Jace, Jadon, Owen, Ethan, and Nolan.

Friends may visit with the family Wednesday, Jan. 25, at Palmer Funeral Home, 202 N. Main St., North Liberty, IN, from 4-8 p.m. EST (3-7 p.m. LaPorte time). A graveside service will be held at noon EST (11 a.m. LaPorte time) Thursday, Jan. 26, at Salem Cemetery, LaPorte.

Randy Lockhart, 1959-2017

Randy James Lockhart, 57, of LaPorte, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017, in his home.

He was born June 13, 1959, in Michigan City, IN, to Jesse and Pamela (Smith) Lockhart.

Randy loved being with his grandchildren and spending time with his friends and family.

Surviving are his mother, Pamela Shankland of New Carlisle, IN; three children, Matthew Schmidt of LaPorte, and Bridget and Alexander Lockhart, both of Michigan City; brother, Brett (Doris) Lockhart of Walkerton, IN; sister, Toni (Scot) Middleton of Michigan City; three special grandchildren, Lucas Stone, Chandler Lockhart and Brianna Lockhart; eight grandchildren and expecting his ninth in April; aunts, Nina Campbell of LaPorte and Dorothy Miller of Robinson, IL; two special nieces, Erika and Jessica Gipson; and several cousins.

His father, Jesse Lockhart, preceded him in death.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, at Full Gospel House of Prayer, 2700 Ohio St., Michigan City, with Pastor Dennis Pickens officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 5 p.m. until the service. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Joseph Biernacki, 1928-2017

Joseph P. Biernacki, 89, of LaPorte, entered into eternal peace Monday, Jan. 23, 2017.

He was born Jan.1, 1928, in LaPorte to Carl and Rose (Sutor) Biernacki.

Joseph worked for 14 years for Allis-Chalmers and then for 30 years with the Whirlpool Corporation as a supervisor in maintenance before retiring. He served his country honorably in the United States Army. He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church and served on the parish council. He delivered Meals on Wheels and served on its board of directors. Joseph coached parochial school football, Little League baseball and Pony League baseball, and was a Cub Scout master.

On Nov. 18, 1950, he married Marie Pearson, who survives.

Joseph leaves many loving memories to be cherished by two sons, Joe (Cindy) Biernacki of LaPorte and Louis (Karen) Biernacki of LaPorte; sister, Helen Retek of South Bend, IN; brothers, Walter Biernacki of Eatontown, NJ, and Richard Zakowski of Northlake, IL; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; son, Robert Biernacki; sister, Sophie Biernacki; and brother, Casmir Biernacki.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, LaPorte. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at St. Peter Catholic Church, LaPorte, with Rev. Ian Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

Robert Vantine, 1938-2017

Mr. Robert J. Vantine, 78, of LaPorte, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2017, at LaPorte Hospital.

He was born Jan. 26, 1938, in LaPorte to Ralf and Hulda (Gierke) Vantine.

Robert was a farmer for his entire life in LaPorte County. He enjoyed taking his antique tractors to shows and visiting with everyone there. In recent years, everyone looked for Bob and his International 1206 at the LaPorte County Fair, and before that he was there for the tractor pulls. He was a former 4-H Leader and member of Farm Bureau Board of Directors, Sunday Farmers and Chapter 33 International Club.

On June 25, 1960, in LaPorte, he married Rita A. (Lee) Vantine, who survives.

He is also survived by his special nephews, Doug and Chris Hedington; niece, Debbie Podemski; and sister, Betty (Fred) Hedington.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and son, Robert W. Vantine.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Thursday, Jan. 26, from 4 to 8 p.m., and Friday, Jan. 27, from 9 to 10 a.m. A life celebration will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Jay Loucks and Lynn Breeden officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Mill Creek, IN.

Jack Cox, 1937-2017

Dr. Jack M. Cox, 79, of LaPorte, died Monday, Jan. 23, 2017, at Vibra Hospital in Crown Point, IN.

He was born Aug. 21, 1937, in Murfreesboro, Arkansas, to James O. and Lucille (Musgrave) Cox.

Jack graduated from Midwestern Baptist Bible College. He was the founder of Faith Baptist Church of LaPorte and served as its pastor for 40 years. After retirement he was co-founder and pastor of Walkerton Bible Baptist Church.

On Feb. 1, 1957, in Marion, IN, he married Mary Ann L. (McCullough) Cox, who survives.

He is also survived by two daughters, Linda S. (Pete) Kinsler and Laurie Ann Cox; two sons, Michael Lee (Shannon) Cox and James D. Cox; two grandchildren, Melissa (Pete) Kinsler and Mark Comford; four great-grandchildren, Dominic, Julie-Ann, Natalie and Isabella; two sisters, Sonya Nutt and Brenda Roberts; and a brother, Douglas (Reba) Cox.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Winston Cox.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Friday, Jan. 27, from 2 to 6 p.m., and Saturday, Jan. 28, from 9:30 to 10 a.m. A life celebration will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Eddie Heavner officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

William “Bill” Marquardt, 1950-2017

William “Bill” Russell Marquardt, 66, of LaPorte, died peacefully at his home on Friday, Feb. 3, 2017. 

He was born Sept. 11, 1950, in LaPorte to Russell William and Phyllis Rose (Peterson) Marquardt. 

Bill was a master craftsman, putting his gift to work for himself as the owner of Marquardt Construction and at Von Tobel Lumber as an outside salesman. After retirement, he became a school bus driver for LaPorte Community Schools. He cherished his school bus students from Riley Elementary. Bill enjoyed watching sports, especially the Chicago Cubs. He loved getting together with family and friends. He loved life and always managed to find the good in people and situations. Bill had a true servant’s heart and was loving, patient, and giving to everyone.

On Sept. 19, 1970, in LaPorte, he married Peggy Miller, who survives. 

Also surviving are his beloved children, Christopher Marquardt of LaPorte, Nevada Marquardt of Indianapolis and Sierra (Shawn) Smith of Michigan City, IN; four grandchildren, Harper, Amara, Damion and Roison; sister, Becky (Larry) Pierce of Kingsford Heights, IN; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and a great-great-nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Curt Marquardt.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Bethel Chapel, 2805 N. Ind. 39, LaPorte, with Pastor Jim Mandeville and Pastor Larry Owen officiating. Visitation will be at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, on Friday, Feb. 10, from 3 to 7 p.m., and at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the service. Interment will take place at a later date.

Doris Malstaff, 1934-2017

Doris E. Malstaff, 82, of Union Mills, IN, entered into eternal peace Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017.

She was born March 22, 1934, to William and Hazel (Hahn) Mulloy.

Doris graduated from Hanna High School in 1952. She had been employed with Nelson Shade, Production Credit Association, and most recently Wells Fargo Bank as an administrative assistant before retiring. Doris was a member of Hanna United Methodist Church and the pinochle club with friends, and was a talented artist.

On April 23, 1955, in Hanna, IN, Doris married Warren Malstaff, who preceded her in death on Jan. 22, 2004.

Doris leaves many loving memories to be cherished by two daughters, Beth Amy (Dennis) Kellogg of LaPorte and Marla G. (Tom) Bolakowski of Hanna; son, Jay A. Malstaff of LaPorte; seven grandchildren, Nicholas and Alexander (Stephanie) Malstaff, Jenna (Dan) Layton, Neil (Kelsey) Bolakowski, and Kurtis (Alexandra), Gregory and Dana Coulter; eight great-grandchildren, Kasey, Taylor and George Layton, Eli, Gabriel and Elaina Malstaff, and Matthew and Emma Coulter; and two sisters, Jeannie Heironimus of Noblesville, IN, and Evelyn (Norman) Carpenter of Hanna.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Howard and Ray Mulloy.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, LaPorte. A funeral service will be held at Hanna United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, with Rev. Darren Williams officiating. Visitation will be at the church Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the service. Burial will follow in Union Mills Cemetery.

Marcia Daniel Levine, 1926-2017

Marcia Lee Daniel Levine, 90, was born in Fort Wayne, IN, on Oct. 15, 1926. She was the daughter of Lee and Sarah Lipman Daniel and grew up in Columbia City, IN. She graduated from Columbia City High School in 1944, attended Stephens College (MO) for two years and graduated from Northwestern University’s famed School of Speech in 1948.

After graduation, Marcia worked in Chicago, New York and — in 1953 — when she married Maurice (Maury) Levine, moved to LaPorte. Together, they managed the family department stores (Levine’s Boston Stores) and specialty shops (The Village Scene and Joseph’s Shoes).

Marcia — along with her husband — loved traveling the world and seeing theater, visiting six continents and seeing hundreds of plays in New York and Chicago. She was a voracious reader of both serious fiction and nonfiction, as well as a collector of 20th Century artists’ works. Her weekly column on cooking and more (Shop Talk) in the LaPorte Herald-Argus spawned the well-received compilation, Levine’s Cooking Cards.

Marcia appeared in a number of plays at the LaPorte Little Theater Club during the 1950s and ’60s, as well as being active in the Ruth Coffeen Poetry Group in LaPorte. In later years, she was a resident of Naples, FL, where she was a patron of the Naples Council on World Affairs and Naples-Artis Baker Art Museum.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Adele Daniel Gross; and daughter, Sandra Jane Levine.

Her husband of 63 years survives. Also surviving are her son, Lee Daniel Levine; daughter, Joan Kay Russell; son-in-law, Michael Russell; and three grandchildren, Remy Daniel Russell, Emma Rose Russell and Isadore (Izzy) Daniel Levine.

She will be buried at B’ne Zion Cemetery in LaPorte. A private memorial service will be held there at a later date.

Diane Danielson, 1952-2017

Diane Sue Danielson, 64, of LaPorte, died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017. 

She was born April 23, 1952, in LaPorte to Frank A. and Sally A. (Stutts) Danielson. 

Diane graduated from LaPorte High School in 1970 and from Ball State University with an associate degree in 1972.  She was an administrative assistant with the LaPorte County Assessor’s Office.     

Diane leaves behind her son, Aaron Jonas of LaPorte; her mother, Sally A. Danielson of LaPorte; sister, Debbie Essling of Waukegan, IL; and brother, Al Danielson of LaPorte.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Kathy Krentz.

Family and friends may visit from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, LaPorte.

Cheryl Sue Simpkins, 58, of LaPorte, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017. 

She was born July 22, 1958, to Thomas and Pearl (Diedrich) Taylor. 

Cheryl graduated from LaPorte High School in 1976 and had worked as a clerk at Wilson Lumber. 

Cheryl leaves behind her mother, Pearl of LaPorte; sister, Karen (Joseph) Macalka of LaPorte; four brothers, Allen (Tari), Dennis (Susan), Kevin and Randy (Sherry) Taylor, all of LaPorte; two sons, Frank and Adam Simpkins; and three grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place. A private service will take place at a later date. Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Richard Minich, 1922-2017

Richard J. Minich, 94, of LaPorte, entered into eternal peace Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017.  

He was born Oct. 12, 1922, in LaPorte to Leo and Elizabeth (Wagner) Minich.  

Richard retired from Allis-Chalmers after 40 years, from Bortz Farm Store after 10 years, and from Bernacchi Greenhouse after 5 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus St. Michael Council No. 1542, Senior Bowling League, Over Forty Club, The Battle of the Bulge Organization, and Hubner-Swanson VFW Post 1130.

Richard served in the United States Army during World War II as a Private First Class with the Headquarters & Service Company 49th Engineer Combat Battalion, having fought on D-Day, in The Battle of the Bulge, crossing the Rhine River, and in The Battle of Berlin. He received four Bronze Stars.

Richard is survived by his wife, Jacqueline M. Cwiklin, whom he wed on Oct. 1, 1949, in Elmwood Park, IL. Richard and Jacqueline recently celebrated 67 years of marriage.

Also surviving are daughters, Kathleen (Jerry) Yoder of Fort Wayne, IN, and Suzanne (Randy) Hornstein of Greenwood, IN; son, Timothy Minich of LaPorte; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Rosemary DeWolf of LaPorte and Sister Helen Minich of Mishawaka, IN; and brother, Thomas Minich of LaPorte.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael Minich; sisters, Mary Biegel, Virginia Biegel and Helen Wandell; and brothers, Andrew, Robert and Leonard Minich.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, LaPorte, where a Parish rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 10, 2017, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in LaPorte. Family and friends may gather at the funeral home at 9 a.m. Friday. Burial will follow the Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 109 C St., LaPorte, IN 46350; or March of Dimes, Lafayette, IN.

Glennis DeLila “Dee” Jones, 88, of LaPorte, died peacefully at 7:58 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, 2017, in her home.

She was born June 11, 1928. 

Cremation will take place. Burial will take place at a later date at Rolling Prairie Cemetery. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Timothy Sandy, 1944-2017

Timothy R. Sandy, 72, of LaPorte, entered into eternal peace Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017.  

Tim was born Aug. 11, 1944, in LaPorte to Robert and Kathryn (Robertson) Sandy.

Tim was a safety manager for American Kendra Rubber Company in Reynoldsburg, OH; had taught in the Fire Science Department at Ivy Tech in Gary, IN; and worked as a guard at the Michigan City State Prison. He graduated from LaPorte High School in 1962, and served during the Vietnam Era in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Volunteer Firefighters Association and served on the Springfield Township Volunteer Fire Department, having served as a Battalion Chief during his 35 years on the department.   

On July 1, 1972, Tim married Rayetta (Baud). Tim leaves many loving memories to be cherished by his wife, Rayetta; daughter, Barbara (Jeff) Roczniak of Manteno, IL; son, Kirk Sandy of Shelbyville, TN; grandchildren, Joy and Ashley “Sandy” Reed, and Robert, Henry, Shyanne, Brianne and Haley Roczniak; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Daniel (Raynell) Sandy and Michael Sandy, both of LaPorte; and several nieces and nephews.   

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, LaPorte, where a Parish Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m., followed by an Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association service. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 13, at St. Peter Catholic Church, LaPorte, with Rev. Ian Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Springfield Township Volunteer Fire Department, 7111 N. 300 West, Michigan City, IN 46360.

Deanna Caddo, 1959-2017

Deanna Lynn Caddo, 57, of Michigan City, IN, died peacefully at 8:50 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, 2017, at Hospice Franciscan Communities, Michigan City.

She was born Nov. 19, 1959, in Michigan City to Peter and Maureen L. (Schroeder) Lulinski.

Deanna was a former member of Grace Church, Michigan City, and the Multiple Sclerosis Society. She enjoyed needlepoint; crafts; trips with the family, including fishing trips to Minnesota; and plenty of other exciting family adventures. Deanna’s favorite job was when she was greeter at Meijer, Michigan City. It gave her the opportunity to meet and greet new people. She especially liked talking with the elderly who came to the store.

On July 1, 1978, in Michigan City, she married her husband of 38 years, Keith Leroy Caddo, who survives.

Also surviving are her mother, Maureen Lulinski of Michigan City; daughter, Angela Caddo of Michigan City; stepson, Shawn Caddo of Michigan City; brothers, John Lulinski of Nappanee, IN, and Michael (Sherry) Lulinski of LaPorte; five grandchildren, Brianna, Caitlynn, Emily, Evan and Camee; mother-in-law, Margaret Caddo of Michigan City; brother-in-law, Bruce Caddo of Michigan City; three sisters-in-law, Diana Butts of LaPorte, Janice (Tom) Moelker of LaPorte and Peggy Caddo of Michigan City; former sister-in-law, Emma Embree of North Carolina; and several loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and special friends.

Preceding her in death were her father, Pete Lulinski; paternal grandparents, Harold James and Ina Nipple Sr. and John and Genevieve Lulinski; maternal grandfather, Henry Schroeder; maternal grandparents, Leona and Stanley Wozniak; father-in-law, Vernon Caddo; brother-in-law, Brian Caddo; and several aunts and uncles.

A funeral celebrating her life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, with Pastor Ray Babcock officiating. Visitation will be Monday from noon until the service.

Scott Gumns, 1969-2017

Scott David Gumns, 47, of Michigan City, IN, died at 3:16 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017, at Methodist Northlake Hospital, Gary.

He was born March 26, 1969, in Michigan City to Arthur Gumns Jr. and Laraine (Hamann) Carlson.

Scott was a member of Carpenters Local 1485, LaPorte, and enjoyed sports.

Surviving are his mother, Laraine Carlson; two children, Ryan and Taylor Gumns; brother, Todd (Julie) Gumns; grandmother, Wanda Bagwell; uncle, Larry (Maxine) Hamann; niece, Megan (Ian) Montgomery; nephew, William; great-nephew, Alex; and three cousins.

Preceding him in death were his father; grandfather, Arthur Gumns Sr.; grandparents, Harold and Ann Hamann; and nephew, Bradley Gumns.

A memorial gathering will be held at a later date. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.
