James Tarnow, 1950-2015

tarnow photoJames L. Tarnow, 64, of Porter, IN, and formerly of LaPorte, died Saturday, March 14, 2015.

He was born Sept. 26, 1950, to Raymond and Margaret (Ritt) Tarnow.

James retired from Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore after 30 years of service. He was a U.S. Marine, having served in Vietnam, and was a Disabled American Veteran. He grew up in the Lutheran Church.

James is survived by his loving wife, Mary (Chance) Tarnow; two sons, James (Kristin) Tarnow II of Temecula, CA, and Joseph (Kate) Tarnow of Lowell, IN; five grandchildren, Tiffany, Lexee, Lucas, Kendall and Michael Tarnow; two sisters, Margaret (John) Harris of Falkville, AL, and Jan (Larry) Craft of Knox, IN; two brothers, Larry (Barb) Tarnow of Canyon City, CO, and Rod (Chris) Tarnow of Knox; and several nieces and nephews.

James was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; Betty Nelson and Marjorie Ella Tarnow; and twin great-niece and great-nephew, Elizabeth and Ryan Beadles.

Visitation will be held at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 18. A funeral service will be held Thursday March 19, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial with military honors will follow in Door Village Cemetery.

Marcelline “Marcy” Breese, 1921-2015

img073Marcelline Velma “Marcy” (Johnson) Breese, of LaPorte, died Friday, March 13, 2015.

She was born March 30, 1921, in LaPorte to Walter G. and Catherine (Iselman) Johnson.

Marcelline worked for Essling Cleaners for more than 25 years as a clerk, retiring in 1991. She graduated from LaPorte High School in 1939 and married her husband, Leroy W. Breese, on June 29 of that same year; they had been married for 45 years when he passed away. Marcelline was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in LaPorte and a member of St. John’s Evening Circle. Marcy was a woman of astounding inner strength and genuine compassion. She and her husband provided a loving, supportive home not only for their two daughters, but also for numerous nieces and nephews who were often included in the loving atmosphere at their home.

On June 29, 1939, in LaPorte, she married Leroy Breese, who preceded her in death on Oct. 3, 1984.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters.

Marcelline leaves behind two daughters, Jean (Clifford) Bruce of Glen Falls, NY, and Jane (Robert) Lesher of Lexington, VA; four grandchildren, Robert (Ingrid Hoeppner) Bruce of Keil, Germany, Deborah (Frank) Muller of LaPorte, Todd (Christine) Lesher of Fredericksburg, VA, and Jonathan (Melissa) Lesher of Buena Vista, VA; seven great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, on Tuesday, March 24, from 4 to 8 p.m., and Wednesday, March 25, from 10 to 11 a.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

Thompson, Jane obit photo (2)Jane M. Thompson, 76, of New Buffalo, MI, and formerly of LaPorte, died Wednesday, March 11, 2015, at Franciscan Hospice Communities in Michigan City, IN.

She was born March 4, 1939, in LaPorte to Ward J. and Alberta (Wilson) Schwenk.

Jane was a member of Galena Baptist Church, Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 9423 in Rolling Prairie, IN, and International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP). She enjoyed gardening, car shows, her church, and spending time with family and friends.

Special thanks to Dr. West, Franciscan Hospice and Cancer Center for the wonderful care they extended to Jane as well as her family and friends.

On Sept. 26, 1970, she married Sid Thompson, who preceded her in death.

She was also preceded in death by her grandparents, parents and nephew.

Surviving are her brothers, John, Mark, Paul and Dale Schwenk; her sisters, Doris Schwenk and Mary Pearce, both of LaPorte; and her special friend, Michael Kline.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, March 21, at 10 a.m. at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, with Rev. Floyd Wilcox officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, March 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until the service. (All times are LaPorte times.) Burial will take place after the service at Pine Grove Cemetery, New Buffalo.

dorothy kalsowphotoDorothy Theresa Kalsow, 86, of Hamilton Communities in New Carlisle, IN, died Tuesday, March 17, 2015.

She was born Nov. 3, 1928, in Mishawaka, IN, to Philemon and Bertha (Van Haver) Ardeel.

Dorothy was a homemaker and later worked at the Ruth Sabin Home in LaPorte from 1979 until her retirement in 2003. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and a volunteer at St. John Lutheran Church Thrift Shop. Dorothy was a wonderful cook and enjoyed decorating for the holidays.

On Oct. 22, 1949, in LaPorte, she married Donald W. Kalsow, who preceded her in death on July 16, 2013.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; granddaughter, Kali Kalsow; brother, George Ardeel; and sister, Julia Wozniak.

Dorothy is survived by three daughters, Janis (John) Sauter of South Bend, IN, Judy (Keith) Johnson of LaPorte and Jennifer (Ross) Olling of LaPorte;  three sons, Larry (Diane) Kalsow of Newport, RI, Dennis (Ella) Kalsow of LaPorte and Steve Kalsow of LaPorte; 14 grandchildren, Rachel Enright, Natalie Kiff, Lindsay Wathen, Shanon, Jason, and Tony Barnhart, Ryan, Stephanie, Sean, Joshua, Lucas and Karli Kalsow, and Ashley and Austin Olling; 18 great-grandchildren, Dakin, Willow, Julia, Emma, Colin, Kenna, Gavin, Landon, Wesley, Cora, Lyla, Vivian, Jaiden, Gabby, Dylan, Cohen, Alaina, and Brenden; three sisters, Martha Lewis of Lakeland, FL, Jean (Charles) Herrold of LaPorte and Sylvia (James) Reed of Clifton, TN; brother, Eugene (Carol) Ardeel of Lizton, IN; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, on Thursday, March 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Friday, March 20, from 10 to 11 a.m. A funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in St. John Lutheran Cemetery, LaPorte.

Jeffrey Box 001Jeffrey “Jeff” A. Box, 59, of LaPorte, died unexpectedly at 12:38 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, 2015, in his home.

He was born April 12, 1955, in LaPorte to John and Elizabeth (Cockshott) Box.

Jeff loved sailing, spending time in KOP, stargazing and watching wildlife, working puzzles, spending time at the LaPorte County Fairgrounds and spending time with his cat, Socks, who was nicknamed “Kitty.” Jeff was a very gentle person who was kind to everyone.

Surviving are two brothers, Phillip (Paulette) Box of Michigan City, IN, and Michael (Joy) Box of LaPorte; one brother-in-law, Michael Workman; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents and one sister, Susan E. Workman.

A memorial gathering for friends and family will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 12, at W.A. Cummings Lodge in Soldiers Memorial Park, 350 Grangemouth Rd., LaPorte. Food will be served. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

She was born Oct. 30, 1933, in Kingsbury, IN, to Grover Harold Collings and Violet (Anderson) Collings-Cattron.

Violet worked for 19 years at Roll Coater in LaPorte, retiring in 1999; she also had worked at Uniroyal in South Bend, IN, and American Home Foods in LaPorte for nine-plus years. Violet enjoyed gardening and swimming in her pool.

She is survived by two sons, David P. Davidson of Crete, IL, and Dan Davidson of LaPorte; three grandchildren, Mathew Davidson, Michael Davidson and Christopher Brockshire; and three brothers, Jack Collings of Kingsbury, Ira Lee (Owen Lafferty) Collings of New York City, NY, and Gene Collings of Ohio.

Violet was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Dawn Arlene Davidson; sister, June Deditch; and three brothers, Burl Collings, Harold Collings and Norvan Collings.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Monday, March 23, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. A life celebration will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor JoEllyn Chadwick officiating. Interment will follow at Kingsbury Cemetery.

Dolores Johnson, 1923-2015

Dolores JohnsonMrs. Dolores F. Johnson, 91, of LaPorte, passed away into the presence of her Lord on Thursday, March 19, 2015, at Brentwood Assisted Living in LaPorte.

She was born July 22, 1923, in Chicago to Raymond and Marie (Braun) Schleyer.

Dolores was a faithful member of Faith Community Church in LaPorte. She enjoyed quilting, oil painting, reading and Bible study. Dolores was a loving mother and grandmother.

On April 29, 1943, in Chicago, she became the beloved wife of Richard Wilcox Johnson. He preceded her in death Oct. 19, 2004.

Dolores was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Donald Schleyer and Ray Schleyer; and sister, Charlotte.

She was a devoted mother to her children: four sons, Michael A. (Amy) Johnson of West Des Moines, IA, Kenneth (Sarah) Johnson of St. Peter’s, MO, Richard A. (Cinda) Johnson of LaPorte, and Steven (Mary) Johnson of Glendale, AZ; three daughters, Susan (Kenneth) Korinko of Oak Forest, IL, Roberta (Mike) Quattrocki of Alsip, IL, and Linda (Alan) Ruehl of Ingleside, IL. She was a loving grandmother of 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Tuesday, March 24, from 9 to 11 a.m. A life celebration will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Jonathan Bonomo officiating. Interment will follow at Rolling Prairie Cemetery, Rolling Prairie, IN.

Phyllis Colvin, 1921-2015

Phyllis G. Colvin 001Phyllis Glee Colvin, 93, of LaPorte, died peacefully at 8 p.m. Friday, March 20, 2015, in her home.

She was born March 29, 1921, in Monticello, IL, to Phillip and Gladys (Foster) Winder.

Phyllis worked as a crossing guard for 10 years, as well as at Pam’s Pastry, Chesterton, IN, and in the Westville School cafeteria.  She had a great love for stock car racing and spent endless hours at racetracks with her family while watching her husband and sons race. That love continued for NASCAR and her favorite driver, Mark Martin. She loved country music, crafts, gardening, reading, crossword puzzles, spending time with friends, and traveling.  Phyllis’ most memorable excursions were two cruises. She also enjoyed her travels to Arizona, Mount Rushmore, Disney World, West Yellowstone Park, Branson, MO, North Carolina, and the Smoky Mountains.

On Jan. 30, 1943, in Monticello, IL, she married George E. Colvin, who preceded her in death on Jan. 16, 1981.

Also preceding her in death were one sister, Josie Fought; one brother, Dean Winder; two sons, Gary Colvin and Dennis Colvin Sr.; and three grandchildren, Mark and Matthew Godfrey and Chad Cuma.

Surviving are five children, Douglas Winder of Lexington, KY, Larry (Judy) Colvin of Rolling Prairie, IN, Linda (Steve) Fox of LaPorte, Denise (Zad) Highsmith of Lexington, KY, and Dale Colvin of LaPorte; two brothers, Lester Winder of Monticello, IL, and Warren (Jeannette) Winder of Buckley, IL; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; close friends, Audra and John Saylor of Michigan City and Mary Jane Zacharias, all of Michigan City, IN; daughter-in-law, Kathy Colvin of Michigan City; and friend, Diana Combs of Michigan City.

A special thank you to the hospice staff, who provided Phyllis with loving care in the last months of her life.

Entombment will be held at a later date in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Michigan City. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling the arrangement.

Florence Meyer, 1925-2015

Florence A. Meyer 001Florence Adele Meyer, 89, of LaPorte, died peacefully at 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, 2015, at Miller’s Health and Rehabilitation, LaPorte.

She was born March 22, 1925, in LaPorte to William and Emma (Cramer) Krueger.

Florence started her career at Franklin Stroud Insurance from 1943–1948, then transitioned to Allis-Chalmers from 1949–1959. She later retired from Ophthalmology Inc., LaPorte, after 27 years of service. Florence was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church, LaPorte. She belonged to the Quilting and Social committees at the church. Florence could be relied on to assist with funeral meals and the American Red Cross drives held at Bethany Lutheran Church. She was a past member of Pine Lake Grange, LaPorte, for 15 years. Florence loved singing for church, weddings and funerals. She will be remembered most for the love and care she gave to her family.

On July 19, 1948, in LaPorte, she married the love of her life, Frank William Meyer, who preceded her in death in September 2012.

Also preceding her in death were her parents; one sister, Alice (Krueger) Reese; and two brothers, Bill and John Krueger.

Surviving are her only daughter, Kim (Ron) Shaw of LaPorte; two grandchildren, Briana (Brian) Scanlon and Lauren Shaw; and one great-grandchild, Wyatt C. Scanlon.

A funeral celebrating her life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 27, at Bethany Lutheran Church, LaPorte, with Pastor Dennis Meyer officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Thursday, March 27, from 4 to 6 p.m. and on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the service. Burial will be at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte, following the service. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Uncle RonRonald Glen Hasselfeldt, 84, died March 22, 2015, in Hamilton, Montana.

He was born Oct. 17, 1930, in Rolling Prairie, IN, to Roy and Vera (Ewald) Hasselfeldt.

Ronald was a retired La Mesa, California, police officer. He had served as an aviator in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a Golden Glove boxer.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo; daughters, Rhonda and Karen; grandchildren Haley, Corrinne and Garett; and great-grandchildren, Mikaela and Trey.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Eugene.

Betty Colston, 1936-2015

Betty Joe Colston, 78, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, March 4, 2015.

She was born April 30, 1936, to George and Bonnie Spradling.

Betty’s memory lives on through all who loved her.

She is survived by her husband, Bobby Ray Colston; daughter, Shelley (Randall) Boone; grandchildren, Rachelle (Jordan) Vander Kolk and Michelle (Jonathan) Key; great-grandchildren, Carter, Elsie, Mallory and Wyatt Vander Kolk and Allison and Robyn Key; nephew, who was like a son to her, Charles (Brenda) Bunch; sister, Mary Cowgill; brother, Albert Thomas (Judy) Spradling; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Betty Elkins, Ann Dagley, Lonnie Bunch and Eddie Bunch; and many friends, nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Annie Miller; brother, Robert Spradling; in-laws, Ray and Nancee Colston and Clyde and Mae Bunch; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Beverly Spradling, Jim Cowgill, Lloyd “Corky” Elkins, Robert and Norma Colston, Sidney and Jeanette Bunch, Emma Dean Bunch, Faye Cooper, Johnny Bunch, Boyd Bunch, and Hoy and Violet Bunch.

Betty’s memorial service will be held Saturday, March 28, at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 1808 I St., LaPorte, with Pastor Curtis Southwood officiating. Please join her family for visitation from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Saturday. Betty’s burial has taken place at Patton Cemetery, LaPorte.

Jacqueline Rachelle Beard, 60, of Michigan City, IN, died Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at IU Health LaPorte Hospital.

She was born July 12, 1954, in LaPorte to Edward L. and Nancy J. Wolfe.

Jacqueline loved to play bingo. She loved her great-grandson, Noah, and especially loved and received so much enjoyment from her relationship with her grandchildren, CJ, Alexis, Sierra, Duane and Jasmin.

She is survived by her mother, Nancy J. Wolfe of Ft. Myers, FL; longtime companion, Alden Charles Hopper of Michigan City; daughter, Shawnee M. (Kenny Parks) Beard of Michigan City; son, Charles M. (Danyelle Henry) Beard Sr. of Michigan City; sisters, Vicki Herren and Mildred Hines, both of Michigan City, Alice Adams of Ft. Myers, and Colleen Wadlington of Michigan City; brother, Theodore Wolfe of Winamac, IN; and special friends, Cindy Alumbaugh and Bill Streeting Jr., both of Michigan City.

She was preceded in death by her father, Edward L. Wolfe, and son, Dana L. Beard.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, March 27, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, with Pastor Roger Ash officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, March 27, from 3 p.m. until the service.

Gerald Erickson 001Gerald L. Erickson, 64, of LaPorte, died peacefully at 7:10 a.m. Sunday, March 22, 2015, at Miller’s Health and Rehabilitation, LaPorte.

He was born Dec. 2, 1950, in La Crosse, WI, to Lester G. and Mary Lou (Mallette) Erickson.

Gerald was a graphic engineer at Liquid Packaging Solutions, Kingsbury, IN, for many years. He previously worked at Allis-Chalmers in LaPorte. He enjoyed racing, bowling, golfing, softball and canvas painting, and was a NASCAR fan.

Surviving are five children, Theresa Erickson of LaPorte, Scott Erickson of California, Vicky Sanders of Colorado, Candy (Joey) Venable of Hawaii and Becky of Virginia; one brother, Todd Erickson of La Crosse, WI; two sisters, Pat Stanfield and Dawn Verthien, both of La Crosse, WI; best friend and brother figure, Jeff (Michele) Pugh of LaPorte; and special friend and boss, Teresa Mago, on whom Gerald could always rely.

His parents preceded him in death.

A funeral celebrating his life will be held at noon Saturday, March 28, at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, with Pastor James Bouslog officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until the service.

Connie FloresConstance S. “Connie” Flores, 57, of LaPorte, died Friday, March 20, 2015, at IU Health LaPorte Hospital.

She was born Sept. 4, 1957, in LaPorte to Emil Jr. and Rosemary (Lindgren) Gust.

Constance was a beautiful and simple person who loved the small things in life. She enjoyed Jazzercising regularly and sipping on Diet Pepsi. She was an animal lover and cared so much about her dog, Max. She was a wonderful mother, sister and friend.

Surviving are her beloved sons, Jason (Kara) Flores, Mike Flores and Paul Flores, all of LaPorte; brothers, William (Mary) Gust and Jeff (Hope) Gust, both of LaPorte; two grandchildren, Kade and Drew Flores; and her dog, Max.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Mike Gust.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Visitation will be held Thursday, March 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte. A cremation committal has taken place.

She was born Aug. 29, 1919, in Plymouth, IN, to George and Ada (Cox) Weigle.

Bertha was a loving homemaker. She was a member of First Church of God in LaPorte. Bertha loved to travel and cook. She especially loved sharing time with her family.

On Dec. 24, 1943, in South Bend, IN, she married Harmon Jackson, who preceded her in death June 21, 1980.

She is survived by her son, Roger L. (Pam) Rosebush of Argos, IN; five daughters, Mabel F. Jackson of LaPorte, Madelyn C. Jackson of Hopkinsville, KY, Martha A. (Larry) Gillen of Puyallup, WA, Rebecca L. Groll of Tacoma, WA, and Tina J. (Pete) Jackson Reed of St. Augustine, FL; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Friday, March 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A life celebration will be held Friday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Roger Ash officiating. Interment will follow at Patton Cemetery, LaPorte.

Stephen M Yuhasz 001Stephen Michael Yuhasz, 70, of LaPorte, died unexpectedly at 7:43 p.m. Monday, March 23, 2015, at Health Park Medical Center in Fort Myers, FL.

He was born July 5, 1944, in South Bend, IN, to Zolton and Mary (Bujtas) Yuhasz.

Stephen retired in 1999 as vice president of First of America Bank in LaPorte. He was a past member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, LaPorte, and attended Sacred Heart Church, LaPorte. Stephen was an active member of the LaPorte community, belonging to the LaPorte Chamber of Commerce, LaPorte Kiwanis Club, American Red Cross, United Way of Greater LaPorte, LaPorte County Personnel Association, Michiana Antique Auto Club, and Knights of Columbus. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, whether it be attending sporting events or calling them. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle with his dog, Max, and had a great love for antique cars, which he collected over the years.

On June 5, 1965, in South Bend, he married Mary Martha Yuhasz, who preceded him in death April 9, 2012.

Also preceding him in death were his parents and one sister, Mary Jones.

Surviving are his three children, Kathy (Garry) Lenard, Elaine (Jeff) James and Stephen (Natasha) Yuhasz, all of LaPorte; one sister, Helen (Robert) Prekosovich of South Bend; seven grandchildren, Jordan, Connor, Jacob, Trevor, Emma, Joseph, and Olivia; and his best friend and companion, Marilyn Montgomery of Owensville, MO.

Stephen will also be missed by his many friends in LaPorte, Florida and Owensville, MO.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. CST Monday, March 30, at Sacred Heart Church, LaPorte, with Rev. Ian Williams officiating. Visitation will be at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, on Sunday, March 29, from 3 to 7 p.m. CST, and at the church on Monday from 9 a.m. CST until the service. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend, IN, following the service.

Ralph Niles Sr., 1921-2015

Niles, Ralph PhotoRalph A. Niles Sr., 94, of LaPorte, died March 24, 2015, at Millers Health and Rehabilitation, LaPorte.

He was born Feb. 8, 1921, in Rockport, IN, to Arthur and Maude (Frank) Niles.

Ralph graduated from Richland High School in Richland, IN, and from Lockyear Business College in Evansville, IN. He worked at Servel Corporation in Evansville and then at Whirlpool Corporation in Evansville and LaPorte. He represented Whirlpool in the Administrative Management Society. Ralph was on the board of the Whirlpool Federal Credit and then the Grand Heritage Federal Credit Union, serving as secretary for many years. During World War II, he served in the 8th Air Force as a tail gunner with the 388th Bombardment Group in England. He was a member of LaPorte VFW and American Legion Post 83, where he served as past commander. Ralph loved to play golf and was treasurer of the Beechwood Men’s Club for many years. He also loved to bowl and still went to Casey’s Lanes to watch his daughter and other seniors bowl on Monday mornings. He was a good bowler and won trophies when he bowled in the Whirlpool Bowling League. Just a few years ago, he came in first place in single and doubles in the 8-pin no-tap tournament for seniors at Casey’s Lanes. Everyone who met and talked to Ralph thought he was a special person and loved him. He will be greatly missed.

Ralph married the love of his life, Bettye Doane Scherer, on Sept. 19, 1942, in Rockport, IN. They were very devoted to each other. They were married for 72 years and had two children, Ralph Jr. (deceased) and Connie.

Surviving are his loving wife, Bettye Niles of LaPorte; daughter, Connie Niles of LaPorte; grandchildren, Tina Clowers and William (Carol) Niles; four great-grandchildren, Bethany Baumgartner, Travis Clowers, Brice Niles and Brandt Niles; and three great-great-grandchildren, Madelyn Farlie, Ethan Baumgartner and Lydia Byers, all of LaPorte.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Ralph A. Niles Jr.; sisters, Melba Niles, Eileen Falkenstein and Kathryn Tremper; and brother, William Niles.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 31, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, with Rev. Evan Lash officiating. Visitation will be held Monday, March 30, from 4 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the service.

Jean ChlupacekJean M. Chlupacek, 75, died March 24, 2015, at South Bend Memorial Hospital.

She was born Jan. 12, 1940, in LaPorte to Harriet (Maciag) and Joseph Janas.

Jean was a lifelong resident of LaPorte. She attended both Rolling Prairie and Westville schools growing up. She graduated from Holy Cross Central School of Nursing, South Bend, earning her RN degree. Jean began her nursing career at Holy Family Hospital in LaPorte, then worked with Dr. Smith and retired from I Street Clinic. Jean was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, but could often be found attending Mass at all the Catholic churches in LaPorte. Jean was committed to helping others and was involved in many community organizations, such as Swanson Center and Council of Aging. She was a life member of VFW Post 1130 Ladies Auxiliary, American Legion Post 83 Auxiliary and Polish Falcons.

Jean will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She touched many lives through her tireless commitment to helping others.

On Aug. 11, 1962, she married her beloved husband of 53 years, Ray Chlupacek, who survives.

Jean is also survived by her sister, Joan (Joe) Wisniewski; brother, Joe (Patty) Janas; brother-in-law, Allen (Marilyn) Chlupacek; and sisters-in-law, Joanne (Paul) Janisch and Monica (David) Ellis.

Jean has a large, caring, extended family, which includes many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Jean Marie.

Cremation will take place. Burial and memorial service will be held at a later date.

She was born Sept. 25, 1928, in LaPorte to Paul and Edith (Haskin) Kepplin.

Phyllis retired after 18 years of service in the LaPorte Hospital business admitting office. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the LaPorte Hospital Retirees Club.

On Nov. 25, 1950, she married John P. Crook, who preceded her in death on Feb. 25, 2010.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Lloyd “Jack” Kepplin, Pat Kepplin and Eugene Kepplin.

Phyllis is survived by her sons, Douglas L. (Robyn) Crook of Indianapolis, David P. (Betty) Crook of LaPorte and Dale J. (Josephine) Crook of LaPorte; grandsons, Brian P. (Leslie), Jordan C. (Bree) and Zachary D. Crook and Robert M. (Jo Ellen) Whorwell; and a special niece, Cheryl (Alan) Good.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 1, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte. A funeral service will be held Thursday, April 2, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

She was born Sept. 21, 1934, in Michigan City, IN, to Fredrick “Fritz” W. and Esther J. (Schaefer) Krause.

Gloria loved to bake birthday cakes and cook for her family and make ceramics and crafts. She was a wonderful homemaker. Gloria was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She loved traveling with her husband. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

On Oct. 20, 1956, in Sawyer, MI, she married Dean Schmidt, who survives. They were married for 58 years.

Gloria is also survived by two sons, Stephen (Sarah) Schmidt of Huntsville, AL, and Ricky Schmidt of LaPorte; two daughters, Brenda Robbins of Greenfield, IN, and Cheryl (Ronald) Wilson of South Bend, IN; sister, Sharon (Richard) Barnes of LaPorte; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandchild, and only brother, Eugene Krause.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Tuesday, March 31, from 4 to 8 p.m., and at Trinity Lutheran Church, LaPorte, on Wednesday, April 1, from 10 to 11 a.m. A life celebration will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the church with Dr. Joseph Loftis officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.
