Jack Gilley Sr., 1944-2014

GilleyJack Lane Gilley Sr., 70, of Michigan City, IN, died July 21, 2014, at his home.

He was born May 26, 1944, in Booneville, Mississippi, to Willie C. and Verdie Lou (Johnson) Gilley.

Surviving are his beloved children, Angie (Craig) Dryden of LaPorte, Willie Gilley of Michigan City, Jackie Gilley Jr. of Michigan City, and Lou Ann (Aaron Polan) Gilley of LaPorte; and granddaughters, Zoey and Emma Dryden of LaPorte.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James, A.C., Billy and Bobby Gilley; and sisters, Maxine Tennison, Christine Miles and Betty Poff.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at noon Friday, July 25, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Activity Center, LaPorte. A time of gathering with the family will follow the service until 4 p.m. at the church. A cremation committal has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte.

Judith Benjamin, 1946-2014

Judith Elizabeth Benjamin, 67, of New Carlisle, IN, died Wednesday, July 23, 2014, in her home following a long-term illness.

She was born Nov. 23, 1946, in LaPorte to Guy and Ruby (Farber) Byer.

Judith was a retired floral designer.

On March 26, 1982, she married Duane Benjamin, who survives.

Also surviving are her children, Gary (Esmerelda) Werner, Susan (James) Bruck, Pamela (Joseph) Pask, Lori Long (William Stayback), Michael Benjamin, and Angela Benjamin; grandchildren, Chad Werner, Trent Werner, John Bruck, Amanda (Sean) Cummins, Jason Bennitt, Nicole (James) Sutter, Jared Long, Joseph Pask Jr., and William Stayback III; great-grandchildren, Halyn Pumroy and Fae Sutter; siblings, Fred (Eileen) Byer and Linda (Bernard) Mickevicius; numerous nieces and nephews; and her dog, Lucy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Scott Lucas; and her brother, Daniel Byer.

A private family service will be held at a later date. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Loretta Sauer, 1915-2014

Mrs. Loretta M. Sauer, 99, of LaPorte, died July 25, 2014, at Hamilton Grove Nursing Home, New Carlisle, IN.

She was born June 8, 1915, in Ethan, South Dakota, to Fred and Annie (Erpenbach) Hohn. She had lived in the area for 38 years, coming from North Judson, IN.

Loretta was a self-employed restaurant owner. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and its Rosary Sodality, and Business Girls Club. She had served as manager of the Curiosity Shop and loved to play canasta at the Swanson Center.

On Oct. 1, 1935, in Fox Holm, SD, she married Alphonse Sauer, who preceded her in death on Jan. 13, 1978.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, daughter Linda Sauer, five brothers and one sister.

She leaves one daughter, Carol (Frank) Davis of New Carlisle; two sons, Daniel (Peggy) Sauer of Crown Point, IN, and Lester (Terry) Sauer of Valparaiso, IN; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, July 29, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, LaPorte, with Rev. Eduardo Malagon officiating. Visitation will be at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, on Tuesday from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Burial will follow the Mass in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

The family would like to thank the nurses and aides of Hamilton Grove for the care they gave Loretta.

Betty Benninghoff, 1936-2014

Betty Benninghoff 001Betty Jane Benninghoff, 77, of Michigan City, IN, died peacefully at 6:52 a.m. Friday, July 25, 2014, at Golden Living Countryside Nursing Home, LaPorte.

She was born July 27, 1936, in Michigan City to Arthur and Clara (Killingbeck) Bailey.

Betty worked as a press operator and finisher at Stelrema Corporation in Knox for 16 years. She enjoyed watching television, crocheting, jigsaw puzzles, bowling, fishing at Tucker Lake, and collecting salt and pepper shakers as well as miniature bottles.

On May 28, 1955, in Michigan City, she married Wayne J. Benninghoff, who preceded her in death.

Also preceding her in death were her parents; one sister, Patricia Floyd; three brothers, James Bailey, Robert “Gene” Bailey and Donald Arthur Bailey; and one grandson, Byron.

Surviving are her four children, Barry (Linda) Benninghoff of Chesterton, IN, Brad Benninghoff of Michigan City, Bruce (Joe Ann) Benninghoff of Paoli, IN, and Brenda (Bart) Koss of Fish Lake, IN; one sister, Shirley Mae Hunt of Michigan City; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two daughters-in-law, Ann and Arlene Benninghoff.

A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, with Rev. Kerry A. Robinson officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:30 p.m. until the service.

Long TroyTroy William Long, 38, of Fish Lake, IN, died unexpectedly Friday, July 25, 2014, in his home.

He was born Oct. 25, 1975, in LaPorte to John H. and Audrey (Peterson) Long.

Troy graduated from LaPorte High School and worked for Nova Basement Systems. He was a volunteer fireman for Pleasant Township and loved to spend time with his nieces and nephews. Troy loved hunting, fishing and mud bogging. He was a 10-year member of 4-H as well as a member of SAL Post 400.

Troy is survived by his parents, John and Audrey Long of Fish Lake; sister Kelly (Tim McCoy) Wolff of Fish Lake; brother Johnny (Wendy) Long of Rolling Prairie, IN; grandparents, Harry and Jenny Peterson of Fish Lake; nephews, Christopher, Cortney, Cody, Matt, and Maverick; nieces, Brittani and Jaiden; and great-niece, Kinsley.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Margaret and Raymond Long, and his favorite uncle, Terry Long.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Tuesday, July 29, at 10 a.m. at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte. Visitation will be Monday, July 28, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the service. A cremation committal has taken place.

Troyce VickTroyce Vick, 73, of LaPorte and formerly of Drakesboro, KY, died peacefully at 11:35 p.m. Saturday, July 26, 2014, at home with his family by his side.

He was born Jan. 31, 1941, in Muhlenberg County, KY, to William Robert and Vollie Mae (Croft) Vick.

Troyce retired from Johnson’s Blacktopping after 25 years of service.

On Nov. 14, 1963, in Kingsbury, IN, he married Margaret Louise Vick, who survives.

Also surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Steve Benson of LaPorte; one sister, Ruth Gill of Clarksville, TN; five grandchildren, Tyler, Giavanna, Vincent, Livianna and Tyty; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters, Katherine Stelzried and Ruth Nill Vick; and four brothers, Robert, Paul, Ralph and Norman.

There will be no services. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Susan Gresham 001Susan M. Gresham, 68, of Rolling Prairie, IN, died peacefully at 12:10 a.m. Monday, July 28, 2014, in her home.

She was born May 3, 1946, in Michigan City, IN, to John J. and Eleanor C. (Barnoski) Pytynia.

On April 24, 1972, in St. Joseph, MI, she married David A. Gresham, who survives.

Also surviving are her daughter, Melissa M. Gresham, and one sister, Barbara (Gerry) A. Werdin.

Her parents preceded her in death.

At the request of Susan, there will be no visitation or memorial service. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

He was born July 7, 1951, in LaPorte to Duane Fritz and Pauline E. (Barr) Elder.

Larry loved fishing and fixing computers. He was also a tornado spotter and was on CB radio. Larry loved Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Surviving are his father, Duane Fritz of California; stepfather, Conway Elder of Kingsbury, IN; brother, Dale Fritz of Garden Grove, CA; sisters, Connie (Jeff) Greenlaw and Theresa Keller, both of LaPorte; and caregiver and best friend, Barb Allard of Kingsford Heights.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Pauline E. Elder, and his brother, Ron Fritz.

A cremation committal has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte.

She was born March 17, 1931, in Michigan City, IN, to Amos and Maude (Ott) Juckett.

Evelyn had worked for Howmet (Austenal), American Rubber, American Home Foods and Fountainview Terrace Nursing Home. After retirement, she was a caregiver for seniors. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of LaPorte. Evelyn loved her children and grandchildren. She was a great cook and was always there for anyone who needed help.

On April 2, 1949, in Michigan City, she married William England, who preceded her in death in 1997.

Evelyn was also preceded in death by her parents; son, Richard England; and all her sisters and brothers.

She is survived by her daughter, Tracy (Rick) Kosinski of New Carlisle, IN; five sons, Wesley (Eleonora) England of Buchanan, MI, Steve (Tina) England of LaPorte, Wayne England of Union Mills, IN, Randall (Kristine) England of LaPorte, and Spencer (Erka) England of LaPorte; 27 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Thursday, July 31, from 4 to 7 p.m. and Friday, Aug. 1, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. A life celebration will be held Friday at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Curtis Southwood officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

Bernice Roth, 1918-2014

Attachment-1Bernice Roth died peacefully in her sleep on July 28, 2014, after a night of visiting and reminiscing with close family members.

She was born Jan. 17, 1918, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Jacob and Julia Saperstein. Thereafter, her family moved to LaPorte, where she graduated from LaPorte High School.

Bernice met and fell in love with her future husband, the late Richard Roth, while they were students at Indiana University, where she majored in English and minored in Music. They married on June 14, 1942, in her family’s home. They were married for 64 years, as Richard preceded her in death in 2006.

They were also the very proud parents of one son, Jack A. Roth, M.D., who was born Jan. 29, 1945. Dr. Roth is currently a professor of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, as well as a cancer researcher, at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

While in LaPorte, Bernice was a leader in literary, theatrical and educational organizations. She taught public speaking and worked as a buyer in Levine’s Boston Store, which was managed by Richard and by her cousin, Maurice Levine. In 1980, Bernice and her husband retired and moved to California.

She is survived by her loving son, Jack; her daughter­‐in­‐law, Elizabeth; and two granddaughters, Johanna and Katherine, whom Bernice loved dearly.

She will be buried alongside Richard in LaPorte. A memorial service will be held at a future date.

She was born Oct. 14, 2013, in Indianapolis to Amelia Wilke and Joseph Dunbar.

Brooklynn was a beautiful little girl who enjoyed music and loved to hear people talk and interact with her.

She is survived by her parents; sister, Laci Wilke of Michigan City; brother, Elijah Dunbar of Michigan City; and grandmothers, Annie Wilke of Michigan City and Rebecca Dunbar of Elkhart, IN.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Ronald Wilke.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, with Rev. Jermaine Sanders officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, Aug. 1, from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until the service. Burial will follow the service at Pinhook Cemetery.

Larry Imes 001Larry Alan Imes, 56, of LaPorte, died unexpectedly at 11:12 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 2014, at Franciscan St. Anthony Health Hospital, Michigan City, IN.

He was born May 29, 1958, in Michigan City to Glen and Edna (Mahler) Imes.

Larry attended Rogers High School and Purdue University in Lafayette, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts. Larry loved animals, especially his dogs. He enjoyed the outdoors and being at home with his children. Larry was an outstanding father and husband. He was a dad to many outside of his own, and was a great guy with a huge heart, who would do anything for anyone.

On May 30, 1991, in LaPorte, he married Rebecca (Kniola) Imes, who survives.

Also surviving are two children, Abigail and Hazen Imes, both of LaPorte; one sister, Kay Walker of Michigan City; two grandchildren, Adrienne Imes and Charlotte King; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, non-biological children, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law.

Preceding him in death were his parents; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Gail and Gerald Kniola; and two brothers-in-law, Michael and Scott Kniola.

No services will be held. Cremation will take place. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Virginia GemberlingMrs.Virginia Gemberling, 88, of LaPorte, died Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at Golden Living Center Fountainview in LaPorte.

She was born June 8, 1926, in LaPorte County to John Ray Amor and Mary Louise (Bealor) Amor.

Virginia was a member of Salem Chapel United Methodist Church. She graduated from Kingsbury High School. Virginia loved to do quilting.

On March 16, 1946, in LaPorte, she married James J. Gemberling, who preceded her in death on March 30, 2014.

Virginia was also preceded in death by her parents; son, Terry J. Gemberling; grandchild, Dana Carson; three brothers, Keith Amor, Russell Amor and Alan Amor; and one sister, Elverta Coyer.

She is survived by her two daughters, Sherry (Travis) Shipley of LaPorte and Shurla E. (David) Clark of St. Augustine, FL; son, Ed (Gail) Gemberling of LaPorte; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one sister, Marjorie Scarborough of Union Mills, IN.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Monday, Aug. 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 9 to 10 a.m. A life celebration will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Robert Raschka officiating. Interment will follow at Union Mills Cemetery.

Bobby Joe Lehman, 1935-2014

He was born March 3, 1935, in LaPanto, Arkansas, to David and Daisy M. (Baxley) Lehman.

Bobby Joe worked as a Union roofer for 50 years and retired in 1997. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served as a sergeant in the 101st Airborne Unit “The Screaming Eagles.” He was a member of the American Legion and the American Rifle Association, and he loved to dance. He was a jokester; he loved to make everyone laugh, and loved to tease his family.

On Oct. 20, 1960, in Michigan City, IN, he married Mary Jo Buchan Lehman, who preceded him in death June 30, 2014.

His parents also preceded him in death.

He is survived by his two daughters, Janet (Bobby) Smith of Jacksonville, FL, and Jody (Milan) Lehman of LaPorte; five sons, Larry W. (Sue) Lehman of Michigan City, and Billy (Kim) Lehman, Robert (Linda) Lehman, Norman (Lainie) Lehman and Mathew (Jackie) Lehman, all of LaPorte; nine grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two brothers, Billy N. (Vivian) Lehman of Westville, IN, and David (Beth) Lehman of LaPorte; and three sisters, Dora (David) Martin of Florida, Winnie (Bob) Comfort of Ohio and Lola Davis of Florida.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday, Aug. 6, from 9 to 10 a.m. A life celebration will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Roger Ash officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

Helen Wandell, 1930-2014

img010Mrs. Helen T. Wandell, 83, of LaPorte, died peacefully Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014.

She was born Dec. 21, 1930, in LaPorte to Leo and Elizabeth (Wagner) Minich.

Helen had worked as a loan officer at Federal Land Bank before her retirement. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she was an active member and volunteer of the St. Joseph Parish. Helen enjoyed spending time with family, friends and KOP circle neighbors of 50 years, and especially enjoyed playing bridge.

On June 27, 1959, she married William Wandell, who survives. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2009.

Also surviving are one son, Eric Wandell of San Diego, CA; two brothers, Richard (Jackie) Minich and Thomas Minich, both of LaPorte; and three sisters, Mary Biegel of Brookfield, MO, Rosemary DeWolf of LaPorte and Sister Helen Minich of Mishawaka, IN.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Virginia Biegel; and brothers Andrew, Robert and Leonard.

A funeral Mass will be held Thursday, Aug. 7, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, LaPorte, with Rev. Eduardo Malagon officiating. Visitation will be at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, on Wednesday, Aug. 6, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. and Thursday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. The Rosary will be recited by Sister Helen Minich on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow the Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, LaPorte.

Doris Louise Hall, 78, of LaPorte, died Aug. 3, 2014, at her home.

She was born Nov. 4, 1935, in Holcomb, MO, to Noah J. and Martha A. (Cooper) Sullivan.

Doris was a past matron at the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office. She enjoyed her grandchildren.

On Aug. 21, 1954, in LaPorte, she married William Hall, who survives.

Also surviving are her beloved children, Rick A. Hall of Seminole, FL, and Tonya K. Gross of Walkerton, IN; grandchildren, Caroline Hall, Hanna Hall, Madyson Gross and Dylan Gross; sisters, Melba Bettuo of Westville, IN, Linda Johnson of LaPorte, Paula Sullivan of Georgetown, KY, and Jo (Virgil) Metcalf of Kingsford Heights, IN; and brother, Ralph (Jeanette) Sullivan of Cookville, TN.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Lenny H. Hall and William (Greg) Hall; brothers, John L., Melvin Jackson and Jerry Sullivan; and sister, Pat Sullivan.

Joan Martin 001Joan Makina (Sacks) Martin, 75, of Kingsford Heights, IN, died peacefully at 2:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014, at home with her family surrounding her after a seven-year battle with cancer.

She was born Dec. 5, 1938, in LaPorte to Frank and Ada May Makina.

On Feb. 12, 1999, in Beverly Shores, IN, she married William Martin, who survives.

Also surviving are three children, Deata (Rich) Sacks of Michigan City, IN, Danny (Stacy) Sacks of Denver, CO, and John (Teresa) Pierce of LaPorte; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, non-biological children, nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; one son, Bryan Sacks; two brothers, Leo and Stan Makina; and one nephew, Danny Makina.

A graveside service will be held at a later date at Patton Cemetery, LaPorte. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Melonie Burgess Obit PicMelonie Gay Burgess, 55, of North Judson, IN, died peacefully at 9:45 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014, at IU Health LaPorte Hospital.

She was born June 10, 1959, in Michigan City, IN, to Charles Dickey and Augusta (Krickhahn) McMahon.

Melonie was an avid reader and movie buff. The thing she enjoyed most was her family. Her children and grandchildren were her greatest love. Melonie had three brothers and a sister. The closeness she shared with her sister was a special, unique bond.

Surviving are three children, Jason E. Burgess, Michael N. Burgess and Jennifer L. Burgess; one sister, Margaret M. (Dickey) Kedelis; three brothers, Mark A. Krickhahn, Charles N. Dickey Jr. and Richard N. Dickey; and five grandchildren, Andrew Nieman Burgess, Danielle T. Burgess, Kalee N. Burgess, Derrius Blackmon and De’Shon Blackmon.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, with Pastor Dennis Pickens officiating. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until the service.
