Gregory Sandy, 1977-2014

Gregory Allen Sandy, 36, of Kingsford Heights, IN, died unexpectedly on Thursday, April 10, 2014, at his home.

He was born July 4, 1977, in LaPorte to Daniel and Raynell (Kinser) Sandy.

Gregory enjoyed fishing, camping and kite flying. He was a NASCAR fan and had a close relationship with his son Joshua. Gregory was a very caring and loving father. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.

He is survived by his parents, Daniel and Raynell Sandy of LaPorte; one son, Joshua Sandy of LaPorte; one sister, Amy (David) Coney of Bristol, IN; grandmother, Kathryn Sandy of LaPorte; one niece, Ashley Horton of Bristol; and one nephew, Trent Miller of Elkhart, IN.

Gregory was preceded in death by his grandparents.

A funeral celebrating his life will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, April 14, at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, with Pastor James Bouslog officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 3 p.m. until the service.

Janna Brown 001Janna Marie Brown, 13, of LaPorte, died unexpectedly on Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Memorial Hospital of South Bend, IN.

She was born Aug. 29, 2000, in LaPorte to Ricky and Lisa (Mrkva) Brown.

Janna was a sixth grader at Kesling Middle School in LaPorte. She attended Fairhaven Church and St. John’s United Church of Christ in Michigan City, IN. Janna was a very caring, loving child. She wanted to be a nurse when she grew up to help people. Janna loved hugging others. Heaven has a new angel.

Surviving are her mother; one brother, Joshua Brown of LaPorte; one sister, Jessica Boone of Jacksonville, FL; grandparents, Linda (Richard) Mrkva of LaPorte and Dottie Conley of Tennessee; and great-grandmother, Betty Bowlby of Michigan City.

Preceding her in death were her father, Ricky Brown, and uncle, Johnny Stronczek.

A funeral celebrating her life will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday, April 13, at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, with Pastor Bill Fine officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 1 p.m. until the service.

Nora (Houston) Ford, 1919-2014

Nora Kathryn (Houston) Ford, 95, of New Port Richey, FL, and formerly of LaPorte, died Sunday, April 6, 2014, at Melech Hospice Center in Tampa, FL.

She was born Jan. 26, 1919, in Indiana to Guy C. and Evelyn (Cassady) Houston.

Nora was a LaPorte High School graduate, Class of 1936. She moved to New Port Richey from Taylor, MI, with her husband, the late Raymond J. Ford. She was a member of Magnolia Valley Association and the Women’s Magnolia Valley Golf Club for many years. She was an avid golfer and accomplished two holes in one. She enjoyed playing cards and entertaining.

Besides her husband, Nora was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include two sisters, Marilyn Allison of Milton, WI, and Patricia Kellems of LaPorte, and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, April 15, at 11 a.m. at North/Meadowlawn Memorial Gardens, New Port Richey.

Dyer, Paula S. Obituary PhotoPaula S. Dyer, 71, of LaPorte, died April 14, 2014, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Huntsville, TN, on April 12, 1943, to Doffis M. and Lilly M. (Loyd) Wright.

Paula was a dedicated homemaker and a faithful member of Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in LaPorte.

On July 16, 1960, she married Dwight H. Dyer, who survives.

Also surviving are her beloved daughter, Carla S. (Jon) Yung of Hamlet, IN; sisters, Ruth Lane of Huntsville, TN, and Margie Mullins of LaPorte; grandchildren, James (Aron) Mangold and Ariel (Anthony) David; and great-grandsons, Jayden and Landen Mangold.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Joe Dyer; daughter, Terry Dyer; two sisters, Gerald and Shelda; and two brothers, Junior and Donald.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held in Paula’s honor at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 17, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, with Pastor Royce Ford officiating. Family and friends will be received Wednesday, April 16, from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial will follow the service at Patton Cemetery, LaPorte.

Sherry Lilly 001Sherry A. Lilly, 67, of LaPorte, died unexpectedly at 10:03 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2014, at IU Health LaPorte Hospital.

She was born Dec. 7, 1946, in LaPorte to James and Betty (Goodall) Lockhart.

Sherry enjoyed sewing for the Shriners Children’s Hospital and following the Chicago Bears and Cubs. She also loved her eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Sherry was a past Queen of the Daughters of the Nile.

On June 29, 1975, in LaPorte, she married Roger Lilly, who survives.

Also surviving are three children, Gina (Homer) Flores, Wendy (Jim) Stewart and Mark (Maggie) Lilly, all of LaPorte; eight grandchildren, Matt Lilly, Dusty Parker, Jessica Parker, Samantha Stewart, Kyle Stewart, Jason (Kara) Flores, Mike Flores, and Paul Flores; and three great-grandchildren, David Stewart and Kade and Drew Flores.

Sherry was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Jim Lockhart Jr.

Cremation will take place. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Elmer Janda, 1918-2014

Elmer James “Jim” Janda, 95, of LaPorte, died April 15, 2014, at Franciscan Communities Hospice, Michigan City, IN.

He was born in Chicago on Sept. 11, 1918, to James V. and Emma (Mulac) Janda.

Mr. Janda was a U.S. Army Special Services veteran of World War II. He retired from Berkel Company, formerly U.S. Slicing Machine Company. He played saxophone and clarinet in the Dick Anderson Dance Band from the 1940s to 1978. He enjoyed bowling, golfing and the Chicago Cubs.

On Sept. 5, 1945, in New Buffalo, MI, he married Edna Block, who preceded him in death.

His parents and granddaughter, Deborah Morris, also preceded him in death.

 

Surviving are his beloved daughter, Sharon Wilson of LaPorte; two grandsons, Michael (Doni) Rosentreter of Kingsford Heights, IN, and Jeff (Lisa) Rosentreter of Chattanooga, TN; former son-in-law, Roy Wilson; and three great-granddaughters, Kristen Morris of LaPorte, Lauren Rosentreter of Nashville, TN, and Meagen (Lance) Dowlen of Ft. Hood, TX.

A cremation committal will take place at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, and a graveside memorial service will take place at a later time at Patton Cemetery, LaPorte.

He was born Aug. 7, 1961, in Valparaiso, IN, to David and Karen (Stoddard ) Anderson.

Todd enjoyed his family, good times with friends, water skiing and hockey. He loved vacationing. He had a great laugh and smile.

Todd is survived by his mother, Karen Anderson of LaPorte; son, Zachary Anderson of Kerrville, TX; brother, Craig (Donna) Anderson of Virginia Beach, VA; sister, Michele Williams of LaPorte; brother, Doug Anderson; nieces and nephews, Kane Anderson, Cheyanne Anderson and Madison Draves; and great-niece Makayla.

He was preceded in death by his father, David Anderson, and his grandparents, John and Evelyn Mroz and Nelson and Kathrine Anderson.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 19, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, with Rev. Joel Zipay officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until the service. Cremation has taken place.

She was born Nov. 17, 1958, in Michigan City, IN, to Robert and Maxine (Zallas) Kietzman.

Katherine owned and operated Superb Curb Concrete in LaPorte with her husband. She was a member of LaPorte Seventh Day Adventist Church.

On July 5, 1981, she married Paul Moser, who survives.

Also surviving are her beloved children, Brandy (Jonathan) Salisbury of LaPorte and Crystal (Andy) Evans of Victoria, TX; two grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Dylan Salisbury; her mother, Maxine Kietzman of New Carlisle, IN; and eight siblings, Judy (John) Chirco of Grand Rapids, MI, Tom (Cindy) Kietzman of Michigan City, Sandy Palmer of Pennsylvania, Dave (Debbie) Kietzman, Debbie Martinez of Carmel, IN, Joyce Frank of Orlando, FL, Becky Kietzman of Rockledge, FL, and Robert Kietzman of Michigan City.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Kietzman.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, April 21, at LaPorte Seventh Day Adventist Church with Pastor Andre Payne and Chaplain Thandi Chiwaya officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Monday from 5:30 p.m. until the service. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

Sherry-Boardman-200x290Sherry Lynn (Palmer) Boardman, 57, of Indianapolis, and formerly of Wheatland, IN, died at 11:02 p.m. April 14, 2014, at her residence.

She was born March 6, 1957, in Vincennes, IN, to Robert E. and Janice L. (Mitchell) Palmer.

Sherry had a great passion for photography and opened Sherry’s Photography in Vincennes in 1991. She loved being a part of capturing memories for so many important moments in others’ lives. Sherry’s other love, besides the love she had for her daughters and family, was her love of everything Disney. Her dream of working at Disney finally came true when she was hired as a photographer for the Walt Disney Company in 2006. She shared so much magic with those around her and left lifelong impressions on many cast members as well as guests to Disney World.

Surviving Sherry are her two daughters, Julie Boardman of Greenwood, IN, and Staci Boardman and her fiancé C.J. Churney of Greenwood; her brothers and their spouses, Bob and Nancy Palmer of Vincennes and Bill and Billie Palmer of Lawrenceville, IL; brothers-in-law and their spouses, Mike and Jan Boardman, Steve and Linda Boardman, and Chris and Cindi Boardman; sister-in-law, Beth Boardman; nieces and nephews, Jennifer Parker, Erin and Todd Poynter, Bill and Janlyn Palmer, Andy and Leah Palmer, Daniel and Samantha Palmer, Matt and Pam Boardman, Jennifer Boardman, Sydney and Mark Roule, Michael Boardman, Michelle Boardman, Brittany Boardman, Adam and Brittany Boardman, Lindsey and Andrew Cooper, and Chelsea and Benji McDonald; and 18 great-nieces and great-nephews.

Sherry was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Janice Palmer, and sister-in-law, Denise Palmer.

A celebration of Sherry’s life will be held Saturday, April 26, at 4 p.m. EDT at Goodwin Funeral Home, Vincennes, with Rev. Jarrod Chattin officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. EDT. at the funeral home.

Reed, Vicki J. obit photoVicki J. Reed, 60, of rural LaPorte, died Thursday, April 17, 2014, at IU Health LaPorte Hospital under hospice care after a valiant battle with cancer.

She was born March 31, 1954, in Evansville, IN, to W. Garry and Johnie (Stiles) Austin.

Vicki was an avid fan of the Chicago Bears and Cubs. She enjoyed gardening and was very creative. Vicki loved her grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. She and her husband took several trips to visit lighthouses in the U.S.

On Sept. 20, 1975, she married William Leslie Reed, who survives.

She is also survived by two sons, Timothy (Amy) Reed of LaPorte and Jeremy Reed of South Bend, IN; eight grandchildren, Timothy W., Daniel, Dakota, Derek, Dylan and Deanna Reed, Damen Jackson, and Brittnie Sowards; her brother, Garry Austin of LaPorte; her mother, Johnie Kozor of Minneapolis, MN; her father and stepmother, W. Garry and Phyllis Austin of LaPorte; stepsisters, Carol Kozor of Minneapolis and Nancy Kozor Niggli of Switzerland; stepbrother, Mark Kozor of Minneapolis; aunts, Nancy Church and Connie Austin; nieces; nephews; cousins; her husband’s family; and three step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Mitchell Kozor; stepbrother, David Kozor; and her grandparents.

A memorial celebration of Vicki’s life will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, with Pastor Jeff Zigler officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m. A cremation committal has taken place per Vicki’s wishes.

She was born Nov. 23, 1938, in Michigan City, IN, to Fred William and Elsie Marion (Phillips) Mansfield.

Vella was a retired bundler, having worked for House of Fara and American Rubber. She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene. She enjoyed gardening, canning and baking. Vella loved all of her grandchildren.

On May 25, 1959, at the Waterford Methodist Church in Michigan City, she married Jack Lee Pointon, who preceded her in death.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers and three sisters.

Surviving are her beloved children, William “Allen” (Laura) Pointon, Stephanie (Charles) Green and Carolyn “CJ” (Wayne) Wright, all of LaPorte; eight grandchildren, Candice, Eric, Dustin, Angelica, Brittney, DeAnn, Chi, and Charles; 11 great-grandchildren; brother, Earl (Sharon) Mansfield of Rolling Prairie, IN; and sister, Barbara Klosowski of LaPorte.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, with Rev. Dan McDonald and Rev. Roger Ash officiating. Visitation will be Monday, April 21, from 4 to 8 p.m., and Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the service. Burial will take place at Patton Cemetery, LaPorte.

Irwin “Irv” Mellenthin, 1924-2014

Irv Mellenthin PhotoIrwin “Irv” George Mellenthin, 89, of LaPorte, was called home by his Heavenly Father on April 19, 2014, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Oct. 15, 1924, in LaPorte to George and Laura (Munzel) Mellenthin.

Irv was a graduate of LaPorte High School and Valparaiso University, where he received his BA in business administration. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the LST-452 in the South Pacific from 1942-1946, and honorably received the Purple Heart. Irv was division vice president in the Parts Distribution Center of Whirlpool Corp., LaPorte, upon his retirement after a 32-year career. He was a member of the LaPorte Industrial Coalition, LaPorte Hospital Board of Directors, LaPorte Bank and Trust Company Board of Directors and LaPorte YMCA Board of Directors, and was president of the Greater LaPorte Chamber of Commerce. Irv was a Western Senior Golf Association member and a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

On July 13, 1946, in LaPorte, he married Frances “Fran” (Schumaker) Mellenthin, who survives.

Also surviving are his beloved daughters, Cathy (Herb) Hagenow of Rockford, MI, and Lynn (Norm) Daniel of Coloma, MI; six grandchildren, Andy (Char) Hagenow of Rockford, MI, Matt (Karen) Hagenow of Farragut, TN, Jason (Missi) Hagenow of Ravenna, MI, Jennifer (Bill) Klitchman of Coloma, MI, Nikki (Kevin) Needham of Coloma, MI, and Courtney (Ken) Fisk of Howard City, MI; 10 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Marilyn (Gene) Burrows and Dolores (Bob) Keller.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother-in-law and father in-law, Harold and Evelyn Schumaker; and son-in-law, Chet Schlipp.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 24, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, LaPorte. Visitation will be at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, on Wednesday, April 23, from 5 to 8 p.m., and at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the service. Burial will follow the service at St. John’s Cemetery, LaPorte.

Tommy Schlegelmilch, 1932-2014

Tommy Schlegelmilch 001Tommy Lee Schlegelmilch, 81, of LaPorte, died at 11:15 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2014, at IU Health LaPorte Hospital Hospice. He passed away from lymphoma (brain tumor) that was found just a month ago.

He was born Dec. 12, 1932, in Michigan City, IN, to John W. and Ida Mae (Dodt) Schlegelmilch.

Tommy was a 1951 graduate of Elston High School. After high school he worked for the Studebaker Corp. Tommy was a Korean War veteran, having proudly served in the Air Force from 1953-1957 assigned to Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. After the war, he graduated from the Indiana State Police Academy at the IU Bloomington campus in 1958. He then proudly served the citizens of the State of Indiana as an Indiana state trooper until retiring in 1988. He was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Skwait American Legion and ACME Masonic Lodge in Michigan City.

Tommy was a good father and husband. He had great friendships with Gus Christ, John Fegaras and Luis Serrano, Chuck, Sue, and Lennie, along with the waitresses and staff at Lindos and Rodini restaurants. You could always find him every day at those restaurants, as well as at Steak-n-Shake, Lowes, Menards and Bobby Diana’s.

On June 18, 1966, in Michigan City, he married Esther (Katzmarek) Schlegelmilch, who survives.

Also surviving are his beloved children, Erik Schlegelmilch of South Bend, IN, and Kevin Schlegelmilch of Golden, CO; three grandchildren, Adam Lee and Kaitlyn Mae Schlegelmilch, both of South Bend, and Ryan Michael Schlegelmilch of Golden; four brothers, John J. (June) Schlegelmilch of Michigan City, Billy Schlegelmilch of Munster, IN, George (Trudy) Schlegelmilch of Albuquerque, NM, and Noel (Jan) Schlegelmilch of Michigan City; two sisters, Betty Noer of Alexandria, VA, and Shirley Meadows of Arizona; two sister-in-laws, Margaret (Richard) Wroblewski of LaPorte and Marilyn Katzmarek of Chesterton, IN; two daughters-in-law, Laura Schlegelmilch of LaPorte and Julie Schlegelmilch of Golden; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; three sisters, Carolyn Graybill and Joan and Patricia Schlegelmilch; and one brother, Donnell Schlegelmilch.

Cremation will take place. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Tamala Harrington 001Tamala “Tammy” L. Harrington, 53, of LaPorte, died peacefully at 5:38 a.m. Saturday, April 19, 2014, at her home.

She was born March 30, 1961, in Michigan City, IN, to George F. and Karen (Kimmel) Bunce.

Tammy was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in LaPorte. She graduated from LaPorte High School in 1979. Tammy was an awesome and loving mother, wife and memaw.

On March 25, 1981, in Michigan City, she married Roderic T. Harrington, who survives.

Also surviving are her mother, Karen Bunce of LaPorte; three children, Julia (Jerry) Harshman, Sarah (Thomas) Hess and Amanda (Tim) Harrington, all of LaPorte; one sister, Kim Bunce of LaPorte; two brothers, Rory (Jodi) Bunce of LaPorte and Brian (Heba) Bunce of Colorado; brothers-in-law, Mark (Doris) Harrington and Allen Harrington, both of LaPorte; sister-in-law, Sue (Bill) Emerick of Michigan City; mothers-in-law, Pat (Neil) Ulry and Ilene (Paul) Zona, both of Michigan City; seven grandchildren, Lexi, Kenzie, Gavin, Josh, Kylie, Braedon, and Chloe; and several nieces and nephews and extended family.

Preceding her in death were her father, George F. Bunce; father-in-law, John T. Harrington; grandparents; and brother-in-law, Matt Harrington.

He was born July 1, 1922, in Kingsbury, IN, to Paul and Zola (Noakes) McEnterfer.

Dick was the owner of East Side Supply and Service Inc. He purchased East Side Garage, which was located at 708 East Lincolnway, LaPorte, in 1946 from his aunt Noakes. In 1965 he purchased and moved his business to the former Cozy Cab, and later Athletic Shoe Factory, located at 305 Detroit St., LaPorte. On Nov. 27, 1995, he sold the business and retired. Dick was a lifetime member of VFW Post 1130, a member of American Legion Post 0083, a charter member of International Harvester Collectors Chapter 33, and a member of Sunday Farmers.

Richard is survived by his beloved children, Richard P. (Sandy) McEnterfer Sr. of LaPorte, Joyce A. Bernacchi of LaPorte, Jean A. (Larry) Bannwart of North Liberty, IN, and Roger A. (Sherry) McEnterfer of Westville, IN; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Thomas “Steve” McEnterfer; sisters, Edythe Morrison and Anita Carson; half brothers, Gayle, Harold and Louis Bluhm; grandson, Ryan McEnterfer; and great-granddaughter, Angel McEnterfer.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, with Pastor Ron Devenport officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 23, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from noon until the service. Burial will take place following the service at Kingsbury Cemetery.

George D. Stombaugh 001George “Dean” Stombaugh Sr., 86, of Bloomington, IL, died peacefully at 1:47 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2014, at his daughter’s home in North Liberty, IN.

He was born July 26, 1927, in Oak Glen, IL, to George Delbert and Ida Mae (Worthington) Stombaugh.

Dean was a truck driver for many years. He was an avid Cubs and Bears fan who loved attending sporting events. Dean also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and watching “Jeopardy” and John Wayne movies.

On Sept. 13, 1991, in Bloomington, IL, he married Ruth Ann (Van Horn) Stombaugh, who preceded him in death.

Also preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Glenn and John Stombaugh; sister, Marie Clingenpeel; two grandsons, George D. Stombaugh III and Jeffery Michiaels; great-grandson, Seth Patrick Qualls; and stepson, John Van Horn.

Surviving are his four children, Diana (Rich) Hamilton of Mill Creek, IN, Judith (Lewis) Eggert of North Liberty, Pamela (Jerry) Koehn of LaPorte and George (Lynn) Stombaugh Jr. of Grand Rapids, MI; two stepchildren, Deborah (George) Watt and David (Lisa) Van Horn, both of Bloomington, IL; two sisters, Beulah Campbell of LaPorte and Shirley (Pete) Costello of Union Mills, IN; two brothers, Ralph (Marilyn) Stombaugh of South Carolina and Richard (Joan) Stombaugh of Valparaiso, IN; 22 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and former wife and mother of his children, Norma Zeimet of LaPorte.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 25, at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, with Pastor Ron Devenport officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 11 a.m. until the service.

Robert Jones 001Robert E. Jones, 85, of LaPorte, died peacefully at 1:43 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Rittenhouse Senior Living, Michigan City, IN.

He was born Sept. 13, 1928, in Rensselaer, IN, to Ruben and Clara Belle (Mitch) Jones.

Robert was the co-owner of Mickey’s Bar in LaPorte, which he purchased in 1982. He also owned two Phillips 66 gas stations, one on East Lincolnway and on Pine Lake Avenue. Robert was employed with Plimpton Press, LaPorte, for 25 years until it closed. He was a lifetime resident of LaPorte and a member of First United Methodist Church, Northern Indiana Modelers Association and Academy of Model Aeronautics. Robert enjoyed building and flying radio-controlled airplanes. He was also a great mechanic who could fix anything and remodeled his family’s home.

On Sept. 12, 1947, in LaPorte, he married Janis M. (Grandorf) Jones, who preceded him in death.

Also preceding him in death were his parents; one son, Garry Jones; three brothers, Jack Jones Sr., Charles Jones, and Gordan Jones; and two sisters, Juanita Folgate and Gloria J. Davies.

Surviving are his four children, Michael (Rondi) L. Jones of LaPorte, Mark (Cathy) A. Jones of Burlington, NC, Cynthia (Richard) A. Bechinski of Michigan City, and Jeffery (Diane) L. Jones of South Bend, IN; 15 grandchildren, Brian, Jaime, Gail, Chris, Amanda, Brandon, Nick, Tony, Kristy, Christopher, Nathan, Lisa, Stacie, Grant, and Britne; 26 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Sandra Jones; and extended family members, Connie Dennis and Mary Gigliotti.

A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 26, at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, with Pastor JoEllyn Chadwick officiating. Visitation will be Friday, April 25, from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until the service. Cremation will take place following visitation on Friday. Burial will take place in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

He was born Jan. 22, 1935, in LaPorte to Ralph W. and Eleanor Norma (Rotzlitz) Johnson.

Vernon worked as a construction superintendent for Tonn & Blank Construction for 32 years. He ran the Blacksmith Shop at Hesston Steam Show for 35 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of North Liberty, IN; National Rifle Association; National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association; and the LaPorte County Historical Society of Hesston; and a lifetime member of United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners of America Local 1485 of LaPorte.

On Jan. 27, 1968, in Walkerton, IN, he married Margaret Mary (Whitmer) Johnson, who survives.

He is also survived by five sons, William (Pat) Harrold of Villisca, IA, Michael (Becky) Johnson of Phoenix, AZ, Jeffrey (Michelle) Johnson of Walkerton, Timothy Harrold of LaPorte and Thomas Harrold of LaPorte; three daughters, Pamm (Phil) Martin of Goshen, IN, Gina (Dan) Rotermund of New Troy, MI, and Laura (Dion) Winter of New Carlisle, IN; 18 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; numerous great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Cheryl (William) Rotermund of Sun City, IL, and Jacquelyn (Charles) Hollar of Warsaw, IN.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; son, David L. Papp, and one grandchild.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, on Monday, April 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, April 29, from 9 to 10 a.m. A life celebration will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Wayne Joyner officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Mill Creek.

He was born April 12, 1973, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Bradley A. and Rosemarie (Wawok) Emerick.

Brian worked as a press operator at American Rubber and was part owner of the Silver Horseshoe in Wanatah, IN. He was an avid Cubs fan. Brian was a loving father, husband, son and brother.

On Oct. 12, 1996, in Wanatah, he married Peggy (Glick) Emerick, who survives.

He is also survived by his son, Bryce Emerick of Union Mills; daughter, Bailey Emerick of Union Mills; mother, Rosemarie Emerick of LaPorte; grandparents, Harold and Rilla Emerick of Hanna, IN; grandmother, Helen Macher of LaPorte; brother, Kenneth (Carol) Emerick of Fort Smith, AR; brother-in-law, Erik (Denise) Barber of Valparaiso, IN; and sister-in-law, Patsy (Robert) Chavas of Wanatah.

Brian was preceded in death by his father.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Monday, April 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A life celebration will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Dennis Meyer officiating. Cremation will take place. A luncheon will be held at the Silver Horseshoe in Wanatah at 3 p.m. Monday.

Thomas V. DeRyke, 78, of Gilbertsville, KY, and formerly of LaPorte, died April 23, 2014, at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah, KY.

He was born May 22, 1935, in Waukegan, IL.

Mr. DeRyke graduated from Chicago Technical College and was employed as an engineer at Berkel Inc. in LaPorte. He enjoyed retirement and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene; daughter, Anna-Lisa Foster (David) of Park Ridge, IL; son, Stephen (Mari) of Indianapolis; five beloved grandsons, T.J., Jason and Adam Foster and Henry and Elliott DeRyke; one brother, James DeRyke of Florida; one sister, Janet Ochoa of Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary Ann Bluma.
