On Jan. 5, 2021, Dortha “Dot” E. Ryan passed away peacefully at home and was welcomed into heaven by God.

Dortha was 97 years young, born June 13, 1923, in Michigan City, Ind., to Alfred and Almeda Oster.

Dot, known to many, was always talking, smiling and enjoying life. Throughout her life Dot touched many lives and worked for many local La Porte, Ind., retailers, Levine’s, Harvey’s, and JC Penney to name a few. In 1985, she retired from Bernel Foam. She was a member of La Porte Missionary Church, VFW and the La Porte YMCA. Dortha loved her girls and big family, church, dancing and music. She enjoyed her summer Thursday nights at Arts in The Park, Sunday church services, and countless hours of family times and events. She is the matriarch of the large family and will be missed by us all more than words can express.

On July 3, 1954, in La Porte, she married James “Jim” Ernest Ryan, who preceded her in death on Oct. 12, 1994.

Scott was a graduate of La Porte High School. He began working at age 15 at Round the Clock Restaurant and followed the owner to Christo’s Restaurant in La Porte, where he worked for 35 years. He especially loved his dogs, Shelby, Angel and Izzy. Scott was also a longtime fan of the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears, and loved going to concerts. He and Jan’s last concert was Pearl Jam at Wrigley Field, an experience he talked about fondly. Scott will be remembered by his friends and family as a hard worker. James David “JD” Kasinger, Sr., 1937-2021

James David “JD” Kasinger, Sr., 83, of Michigan City, Ind., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2021, at Northwest Health – LaPorte surrounded by his somewhat dysfunctional family.

He was born Aug. 15, 1937, in Truman, Ark., to Elmer and Freddie Louise (Perkins) Kasinger. He was the oldest of four children, the others being Elmer C. (Peggy) Kasinger, Jr., Anna Louise Hicks and Doris Ellouise (Joe) Silakowski.

On Dec. 25, 1956, JD married Linda Lou (Keeler). Together they had four children: Delona (Roger) Beadles, Geta (Ernest) Thomas of Arkansas, James “Casey” (Clessie) Kasinger, Jr., and Elmer “Buddy” (Norma) Kasinger.

JD was the official proud “Papa” of 10 grandchildren, but most of the county also called him Papa. He always connected with his grandchildren and asked lots of nosy questions of every one of them. He knew, and had good relationships with, his 20 great-grandchildren.

Anyone who knew JD would not want to pull his finger, never offer him a potato with skin on it, or heaven forbid, a bowl of pasta. It was always amusing to have someone offer him a Coke because without fail he would adamantly claim he’d “rather suck on an exhaust pipe than drink a Coke!” He was a Pepsi man to the end.

From a young age, he had a love of cars (especially Volkswagen Bugs from the ’60s), motorcycles and garages. He always wanted to learn how to fly so in 1954 he joined the U.S. Air Force.  He never got the chance to fly a plane in the military, but boy, did he have a gross medic story that he told anyone who would listen! Later he pursued his pilot’s license at the Joe Phillips airport, where he had an interesting late-night run-in with Bill Haley and his Comets over the FM radio that nearly made him take an impromptu skydiving trip.  In 1981 at the age of 44 years old, he was tricked into joining the Army National Guard with his son, Casey. Casey soon went Active Duty Army, but JD stayed in The Guard until 1985.

JD was proud to be a member of the Midwest Operating Engineers Union and could carry on long conversations about bulldozers and payloaders. And if you had an hour or two, he had lots of stories about his 41 years at the mills.

JD was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Linda, sister Anna Louise Hicks, sister-in-law Peggy Kasinger, his son and best friend Casey, his grandson Jason Beadles, and his two great-grandchildren Ryan and Elizabeth Beadles.

Because his children were exposed to COVID-19 during his illness, a private family service will be officiated by his former pastor, Daniel McDonald. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City.

John Michael Okrzesik, 81, of La Porte, Ind., passed from this life on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2021, at Northwest Hospital – La Porte.

He was born March 25, 1939, in La Porte to Frank and Rosalie (Cebrat) Okrzesik. John was the youngest of seven children.

John was proud of his Polish heritage and took great pride in being an amphibious reconnaissance Marine Corps veteran. His proudest achievement was marrying his wife, Shirley, on June 25, 1960, whom he still referred to as his bride after nearly 61 years of marriage.

John retired from Modine Manufacturing Company after 39 years of service, where he served as president of its union.  After retirement he never slowed down; he was always working on home projects out of his love for Shirley.

Family was the pivotal essence of John’s life. He was proud and honored to be the Patriarch, Father, and Grandfather of a very loving family. Fondly referred to as “Unkie,” he has been a major presence in the lives of nieces, nephews, extended family and many good friends.

John was always intellectually ahead of his time and a forward thinker. He was fascinated by astronomy and eagerly followed celestial events. Another love of his life was music of all genres and he entertained family and friends while strumming his guitar and singing around a summer’s eve outdoor fire. He loved pinochle club, mushroom hunting, fishing and all things nature.

John was a rare combination of someone who had a love of life and a firm understanding of what was important. He had an acute awareness of the importance of a life lived with the ones you love over any material possession. John cared about people in the purest way. He loved them for who they were and always wished the best for them.

John was a member of First United Methodist Church in La Porte. He had a longstanding relationship with God and was very blessed with his faith to his dying breath.

John will be remembered for his ever-present smile and the warmth, depth and intelligence behind it. Most of all we will remember the sheer pleasure of being in his company, how good he made us feel, how free we were to be ourselves around him, and how much we will all miss him. Although our hearts are heavy, we will celebrate his life and find comfort that he is in heaven watching over us.

John is survived by his cherished wife, Shirley (Jones) Okrzesik; loving children, Pamela (Phil) Miller of La Porte, Gregory (Vickie) Okrzesik of Atlanta, Ga., and Regina (Gary) Kriadis of Sanibel, Fla.; and grandchildren Amber, Jeremy and Matthew Noel, Haley (Jeremy) Gazerro, and Gregory and Alexandra Kriadis, all of whom he was immeasurably proud.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joseph, Walter (Barbara) and Frank (Margaret) Okrzesik; and sisters Margie (Ralph) Cannan, Helen (Amel) Draves and Virginia (Elbert) Harness.

His family would like to thank all the healthcare professionals for their great care in the last years of his life and is sincerely grateful to the wonderful staff at Northwest Health, Duneland Dialysis, and especially Dr. Brady and his nurse, Sky, for their comfort, compassion and care for him in his last days.

Family and friends are invited to attend his services, which will be held at Haverstock Funeral Home, La Porte, on Tuesday, Jan. 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by a memorial service. Military Honors will be presented with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery.

The service will be live-streamed on the Haverstock Funeral Home Facebook page.
