Eugene Alexander Dollberg, 1942-2020

Eugene Alexander Dollberg, 78, of LaPorte, Ind. passed away peacefully at home at 10:25 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2020 following a brief battle with cancer. 

 He was born June 27, 1942 at St. Michael’s Hospital in Newark, N.J. to Alexander and Alma (Jabs) Dollberg. 

Gene grew up in Cedar Grove, N.J. and graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1960.  He was an excellent athlete and especially enjoyed softball, bowling and golf. After high school, he worked for several companies in the greater Newark area. He then moved to Indiana to start his family after marrying Carol Lynn Kodweis on Jan. 27, 1968 in Rochester, N.Y.  He later earned his bachelor of arts degree in organization management from Calumet College in May 1989.

Gene worked at Bethlehem Steel until he retired in January 2001 after a 33-year career as an engineer at the Burns Harbor, Ind. plant. In addition to being a great family man and father, Gene was well known in LaPorte for his kindness. He could always be depended upon to help his family, friends and neighbors. Gene volunteered countless hours in the community, serving as a Little League coach, a volunteer at Beechwood Golf Course and past president of the City of La Porte Redevelopment Commission.

 Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Carol. 

 He is survived by his brothers, Dr. Allen (Susan) Dollberg of Novato, Cal. and John (Suzanne) Dollberg of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; children, Ehren (Kristine) Dollberg of Newaygo, Mich. and Jennifer Dollberg of Rensselaer, N.Y.; and granddaughters, Addison and Avery Dollberg.

 Per Eugene’s request, no services will be held. Cremation will take place. Inurnment will be in Pine Lake Cemetery, La Porte.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution in Eugene Dollberg’s name to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, Okla. 73123.

Donna Purtha-Gushrowski, 1952-2020

Donna Purtha – Gushrowski, 68, passed away peacefully at 4:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4, 2020 at her home, surrounded by family.

She was born May 20, 1952 in Michigan City, Ind. to Anna Purtha.

On Oct. 22, 1994, she married Richard Gushrowski, who survives and resides in Michigan City. Also surviving are daughters, Angelia (Shannon) Moss of Michigan City, and Amy (Josh) Price of Fort Collins, Colo.; son, Aaron Price, of Michigan City; grandchildren, Ashley and Amber Remmel, Amellia and Aubrey Moss, Aiden Price, and Ava Coffman; sister, Ellen Spencer, of New Buffalo, Mich.; and brother, Richard (Kathy) Purtha, of Three Oaks, Mich.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Victor Purtha.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Ronald Lee Estep, 1945-2020

Ronald Lee Estep, 75, of Jacksonville, Fla. passed away Sept. 10, 2020.

He was born Jan. 13, 1945 in South Bend, Ind. to Charles Dewey and Ella May (Tuley) Estep.  He graduated in 1963 from New Carlisle High School, New Carlisle, Ind.

He worked many years at American Home Foods in La Porte, Ind. and for over 30 years building and remodeling homes with his twin brother for ESTEP Construction in La Porte.

He married his high school sweetheart, Claudia Dee Stoneburner, in 1966.

Ron had a strong relationship with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  He loved to fish and spend time in nature.  He loved animals, especially his pups and kitties. He was a master craftsman and built many beautiful pieces of furniture and participated in many arts and crafts festivals with Claudia.  His pieces were sent worldwide.

He will always be remembered as a kind and gentle man who was loved by all with whom he came in contact.  He was a loving and devoted husband and father.

Survivors include his wife, Claudia; children, Rashelle Shelley (Charles) Spriggs of San Antonio, Tex., Shawn (Jennifer) Estep of Three Oaks, Mich., and Shane Estep of Wichita, Kan.;  twin brother, Donald (Frances) Estep of La Porte; sisters, Janet Hall of Michigan City, Ind. and Nancy (Elmer) Vogelsang of Newland, N.C.;  brother-in-law, Donald (Susan) Stoneburner of New Buffalo, Mich.;  grandchildren, Heather (Travis) Blanton of Frisco, Tex., Nathan Spriggs of Corpus Christi, Tex.,  Ashley (Brandon) Estep-Cheung, serving in the U.S. Navy,  Sasebo, Japan, Emily Estep of Hawaii, and Abigail Estep of Wichita, Kan.; and many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters; and brothers and sisters-in-law: Mary Jane (Fred) Currey, Priscilla (Rich) Alexander, Carolyn (Gary) Wright, Kenneth Hall and Charlene (Felipe) Stoneburner Postigo.

A memorial Service will be held in La Porte in the spring of 2021.

In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Betty Eileen Galloway, 1930-2020

Betty Eileen Galloway, 90, of La Porte, Ind. passed away Saturday, Sept. 12, 2020 at Miller’s Health and Rehab in La Porte.

She was born April 14, 1930 in Knox, Ind. to Maurice and Clara (Johnson) Leonard.

On June 23, 1946, in La Porte, she married Marion Galloway.

Betty was a member of the La Porte Missionary Church. She enjoyed gardening and she enjoyed her  strawberry collectables. Her true passion in life was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter, Joanne Galloway of La Porte; sons, Marion L. (Judy) Galloway, Jr. of Lafayette, Ind. and John (Pat) Galloway of Hebron, Ind.; grandchildren, Todd Galloway of Louisville, Ky., Scott (Josie) Galloway of Lafayette, Ind. Kyle (Mallory) Galloway of Crown Point, Ind. and Stephanie (Aaron) Miller of Hebron; and five great-grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband; parents; nine sisters; and two brothers.

Visitation will be noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18 at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, where a life celebration will be held at 1 p.m. with Pastor Carl Galloway officiating.  Interment will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery.

Kathleen Cantrell, 1949-2020

Kathleen Cantrell, 70, of La Porte, Ind. passed away Sunday, Sept. 13, 2020.

She was born Nov. 23, 1949 in La Porte to Bill A. and Marie (Hurst) Leahy.

Kathleen worked at Little Tavern and House of Fara.  She loved to cook and have family get-togethers.  She adored her grandkids and her dog, Tucker.  She touched a lot of lives, was deeply loved and will be deeply missed.

Survivors include her children, Susie (Jim Ritter) Masterson of La Porte, Tom (Becky) Masterson of Rolling Prairie, Ind., Robert Smith of La Porte, and Bill Smith of La Porte; daughter-in-law, Lily Masterson of Rolling Prairie; grandchildren, Michael Daisy, Michael Jezierski, Brett Masterson, Ashley Simpson, Nicole Masterson, Katie Masterson, and Mason Smith; great-grandchildren, Logan, Luke, Tre and Liam; siblings, Anna Mary Crum of La Porte, Mary Wentzel of La Porte, Mary Jo (Ron) Griesinger of Niles, Mich., Patricia Boyer of Mishawaka, Ind., James (Rae) Manhart of Valparaiso, Ind., and Ann (Charlie) Cepcani of Cincinnati, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James Cantrell; son, David Masterson; grandson, Alex Daisy; and brothers, Robert Manhart, Michael Leahy, and Thomas Leahy.

A celebration of life will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 at the American Legion Post 295, 710 Water St., Union Mills, Ind. Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Ave., La Porte, is handling the arrangements.

Cremation has taken place.

Irma Jean (Hayter) Daube, 1933-2020

Irma Jean (Hayter) Daube, 86, passed away Saturday, Sept. 12, 2020 at Memorial Hospital of South Bend.

She was born Dec. 23, 1933 at Fairview Hospital in La Porte to Ernest Charles and Irma Ruth (Perkins) Hayter.

On Aug. 1, 1953 at Tracy United Methodist Church, Hamlet, Ind., she married Charles “Ted” Theodore Daube.  They enjoyed 64 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on March 3, 2018.

Irma was a graduate of Union Township High School and attended Ball State, where she received her teaching credentials.  She worked as a teacher and substitute teacher at Kingsford Heights Elementary, Walkerton Elementary and LaPaz/Lakeville Corporation.  Irma worked as Johnson Township clerk and deputy assessor for 28 years.  She was also employed as a county government employee in the assessor’s office.  Irma served the Republican Party as precinct committee person for years, but the “jobs” she loved the most were homemaker, farmer’s wife, gardener, mother, and grandmother.

Irma was a lifelong member of Tracy United Methodist church where she was actively involved in sharing her talents, which will be deeply missed.  She was a lifelong member of the La Porte County Farm Bureau as well.

Irma and Ted enjoyed spending winters in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. and were involved at Coronado Methodist Church.  They had many wonderful friends and enjoyed hosting “snow bird” visitors at their home.  Irma’s past times included gardening (especially her flowers), cooking, canning and providing food and meals for others.   She enjoyed watching and feeding hummingbirds – sometimes up to 25 at a time.  She was always entertained by a spirited conversation of politics, but most of all she enjoyed doing for others.

Survivors include her children, Michael (Kelly) Daube of Walkerton and Susan Daube of Indianapolis, Ind.; grandchildren, Julia (Quinn Ricker) Likens of Pendleton and Derek (Kelly) Daube of Walkerton; great-grandchildren, Rosemary and George Likens; brother, Robert (Patty) Hayter of Clovis, N.M.; brother-in-law, James (Lois) Daube; sisters-in-law, Nancy and Joyce Daube; eight nieces and nephews; and numerous beloved cousins.

In addition to her husband, Irma was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18 at and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by a celebration of life service at 10 a.m. with Pastor Bob Coolman officiating.  Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Walkerton.

Due to the recent governor’s order, attendees are required to wear a mask.  Please be reassured the family understands if some folks are unable to attend.

H. Wayne Rosentreter, 1953-2020

H. Wayne Rosentreter, 67, of Clermont, Fla., entered through Heaven’s Gates on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2020.

He was born April 24, 1953 in LaPorte, Ind. Wayne graduated from LaPorte High School and received two degrees in pastoral ministry and Christian education from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago.

In 1972, he married the love of his life, Barbara, who survives him. Wayne is also survived by son, Josh Rosentreter; daughter, Beth (Matt) Irvin; grandson, Isaac Rosentreter; granddaughters, Alysa Kaminskas and Jennifer Irvin; sister, Sharon (Bob) Reuer; brothers, Sonny (Joanne) Theobald, and Ed (Becky) Hildreth, and many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Roberta Rosentreter; brother, Alan Theobald; sister, Nancy (Dale) Owens; and birth mother, Mary Jane (Rosentreter) Theobald.

Wayne was well-known for his love of Christ and his family. Returning from Moody Bible to his hometown of LaPorte, he shared his love for Christ to all who knew him. He served a few congregations throughout his pastoral career in LaPorte, before moving to warehouse management.

He was full of love, life and laughter. There was never a dull moment around him; he was a combination of Billy Graham, Bill Murray, David Letterman, and Curly Howard.

Wayne loved to drive and was an expert at planning road trips, in which he was the self-proclaimed tour guide for his family and friends. He was a NASA-loving, Lionel train-collecting, drum-beating kind of guy, who always enjoyed watching da Bears, da Cubs, and da Bulls. Most of all, he was a family man who loved God. Everyone who remains will miss him dearly.

Due to the current, unprecedented guidelines limiting public gatherings because of the COVID-19 virus, a celebration of life service will take place at a later date.

Shelly Probst, 55, of La Porte, Ind. passed away Friday, Sept. 11, 2020 at Porter Memorial Hospital, Valparaiso, Ind.

She was born Aug. 31, 1965 in Michigan City, Ind. to Melvin and Carol (Weeden) Miller.

Shelly was married to her husband, Tommie, for 36 years before his death. A life-long resident of this area, Shelly enjoyed fishing, swimming, and doing puzzles; she also enjoyed her dog, Lily.

Survivors include her son, Chance Probst of La Porte; daughters, Angel  Probst of La Porte, Alicia Probst of Shellyville, Ind., and Shyann Probst of La Porte; brothers, David Miller and Rodney Miller, both of La Porte; and sisters, Cathy (Dell) Bobi of New Carlisle, Ind. and Toni Miller of Kentucky.

Ramona Irene Dillard, 92, of La Porte, Ind. passed away Saturday, Sept. 12, 2020 at Memorial Hospital, South Bend.

She was born Aug. 19, 1928 in Highland Park, Mich. to Raymond and Blanch Irene May.

Ramona was a housewife and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.  She lovingly enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include her children, Betty (David) Durham of Kingsbury, Ind., Larry (Paula) Dillard of Kingsbury, Jack (Jennifer) Dillard of La Porte, and Billy (Dianne) Dillard of Springville, Ind.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Michael May of Burlington, Wisc.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Dillard; parents; and son, Gary Ray Dillard.

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte. Interment will take place at a later date at Kingsbury Cemetery.

David W. Jablonski, 1953-2020

David W. Jablonski, 67, of La Porte, Ind. passed away Monday, Sept. 14, 2020.

He was born Aug. 2, 1953 in La Porte to William and Helen (Moryl) Jablonski.

On Jan. 15, 1993 he married Pamela S. Kamp.

Dave worked for General Mills as a grocery store representative and he was a manager at Al’s Supermarket in both La Porte and Michigan City.   He was a member of the Polish Falcons in La Porte, PNA (Polish National Alliance), and he was an avid Packers and Cubs fan.

Survivors include his wife; children, Missy (Mike) Jablonski of South Bend, Ind., Mandy (Rob) Lower of La Porte, Nancy (Justin) Jacobek of Tinley Park, Ill., Brent (Patsy) Rydzinski of Galien, Mich., and Brian (Jodi) Rydzinski of Naples, Fla.; grandchildren, Cayden, Ahvanna, Madelynn, Laila, Reese, Henry, Walter, Neve, Quinlynn, and Graham; siblings, Jim (Malinda) Jablonski, Karen (Steve) Crabtree and Mark (Teresa) Jablonski, all of La Porte; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Polish Falcons in LaPorte. Cremation has taken place.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Patricia A. Irk, 76, of Michigan City, Ind. passed away Monday, Sept. 14, 2020.

She was born Oct. 30, 1943, in Michigan City to Robert and Helen Irk.

Patricia retired from the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City as a guard. Patricia had a passion for gardening and a love for animals; she also loved her old country music. She’s going to be missed.

Survivors include her sons, Jody (Karla) Schoff of Michigan City, Doug (Tanya) Hinshaw of Mesa, Ariz., Bill Levendoski of Apache Junction, Ariz., Butch Schoff,  and Robert Irk of Michigan City; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and brothers, Jerry (Barb) Irk of North Carolina, George (Karen) Irk of La Porte, and Norm Irk.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2020 at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Ave., La Porte, Ind., where a funeral service will follow at 7 p.m.

Larry “Joe” Pumroy, 1942-2020

Larry “Joe” Pumroy, 77, of Monticello, Ind. passed away at 7:40 a.m. Tuesday, May 5, 2020 at his residence.

He was born Oct. 14, 1942 in Gary, Ind. to Lawrence and Dorothy (Salrin) Pumroy.

Joe was a graduate of Union Township High School near Kingsford Heights, Ind. and worked as a steel runout operator for Bethlehem Steel.

On Feb. 7, 1975 in Goshen, Ind. he married Marylou Lawrence.

He was a member of Monticello United Methodist Church.

Joe was a wonderful, loving husband, father, and papa. Joe traveled out west in his 20s to enjoy hunting deer and antelope. He then met the love of his life, Marylou, in his 30s and began raising a family.

He was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting, trap and skeet, fishing, golfing, boating, painting, playing guitar, ball room dancing, playing games and telling stories. Joe loved to teach us how to do all the things he loved. Joe had a laugh that you could never forget. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He loved to sing. He sang in the Monticello United Methodist choir and helped with Soup for the Soul. He also played on their dart ball league. Joe loved to spend time playing poker, cribbage, and euchre, with family at his mom’s house, family reunions, & at his house. Joe loved to sit and tell stories to anyone who listened, especially his children and grandchildren. They would sit and listen to the stories of Wampus cats, and going to the river when he was young, and all of his fun adventures with his friends and family growing up. Joe loved his children and grandchildren. You couldn’t get away without him bragging about all of them.

Joe proudly served his country in the Navy from 1959 to 1963. He was on two different ships during his time in the Navy; the USS Salamonie and the USS Arcturus. He was a member of the American Legion Post 81. He was a lifetime member of the NRA.

Joe and Marylou lived in Union Mills, Ind. for 29 years where they raised their children before his retirement to Monticello on Lake Freeman.

He is survived by his wife; children, Leah Hayes of Phoenix, Ariz., Andrew (Lisa) Pumroy of Michigan City, Ind., Lawrence (Kelli) Pumroy of Rolling Prairie, Ind., and Autumn (Micheal) Reese of LaPorte, Ind.; siblings, Penny Derucki of Rolling Prairie, Ind. and Barry (Cheryl) Pumroy of LaPorte; and grandchildren, Bryce, Jordan, Chase, Alex, Joseph, Georgia, and Andrew.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Jack, Jim, Gary, and Robert Pumroy.

A graveside service with full military rites will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3 at Pine Lake Cemetery, La Porte, with Pastor Brian Beeks of the Monticello United Methodist Church officiating.

Memorial contributions may be given to the family or to the Monticello United Methodist Church to benefit Soup for the Soul. Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello handled the arrangements.

Lois Ann Weeden, 85, of La Porte, Ind. passed away Monday, Sept. 14, 2020 at La Porte Hospital.

She was born Sept. 20, 1934 in Cedar Point, Kan. to Jim and Inez (Anderson) Weeden.

A member of Bethany Lutheran Church in La Porte, Lois had lived in the La Porte area since grade school. In 1952 she graduated from Mill Creek High School. Lois retired as office manager at Screw Machine Products after working there for many years.

Survivors include her sister, Ula Mae Godfrey of Lebanon, Ten.; brother, Michael Alonson Weeden of Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, Jim, Mary, Peggy, Annetta, Carol, Harris and Larry.

Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte is handling the arrangements. Cremation has been selected and Lois will be buried with her mother at Pine Lake Cemetery.

Iva Lee Thomas, 1929-2020

Iva Lee Thomas, 91, of Rolling Prairie, Ind. passed away Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2020 at home, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born March 3, 1929 in Democrat, Ky. to Henry and Celeste (Gibson) Cook.

In 1973, Iva married Albert Thomas, who preceded her in death in 1999.

She lived in many places including Kentucky, Ohio and New York, but spent the last 30 years in this area. Iva was a member of the Soul’s Harbor Church of North Judson, Ind., where she was a Sunday school teacher.  Quilting, sewing and gardening, especially gardening with flowers, were some of her favorite pastimes. Because of her passion for helping others, Iva was a Sunday School teacher and enjoyed visiting nursing homes where she and her group would sing and play instruments, like the spoons, for the residents.  Her family and friends were her joy!

Survivors include her sons, James P. (Joyce) Farlie of Michigan City, Ind., Ronnie L. (Robin) Farlie of Rolling Prairie, Ind., and Dexter L. Farlie of Kingsford Heights, Ind.; brothers, Doug (Rose) Cook of Millstone, Ky. and Jesse (Kay) Cook of McRoberts, Ky.; grandchildren, Iva, Jason, Ron, Jeffrey, James, Christopher, Anthony, George, Paula; great-grandchildren, Kasey, Randy, Jessica, Dakota, Joseph, Jason, Julie, Jeffrey, Sara, Austin, Damon, Dayton, and Jonathan; and great-great-grandchildren, Canaan, Rebekah, Owen, Maddie, Liam, Ethan, Natali and Emma.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; son, George Henry Farlie; granddaughter,  Rebecca; sisters, Laverne Smith and Faye Kincer; and brothers, Roy, Eugene, Ralph and Isaac “Bud” Cook.

Visitation will be at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, followed by a celebration of Iva’s life at 11 a.m. with Pastor Philip Ritter, Tabernacle of Prayer, Newnan, Ga., officiating.  Interment will follow at Rolling Prairie Cemetery.

     Adam Keith “Ghetty” Handy Spry, 36, of La Porte, Ind. passed away Sept.5, 2020 at Franciscan  Hospital.
     He was born Aug. 31, 1984 in Merrillville, Ind. to Kimberly Handy and Larry Spry, who survive. Also surviving are Adam’s children, Ligia and Lee; brothers, Mike,  Eric,  Anthony,  and Ian; sisters, Jenny and Sis; uncle, Ted; and grandmother, Julia.
     Adam was preceded in death by his sister, Jessie.
     A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Larry Gene Conner, 1948-2020

Larry Gene Conner, 72, of Walkerton, Ind. passed away Sunday, Sept. 13, 2020 at his home.

He was born July 23, 1948 in Marion, Ind. to Jewell Conner and Rita (Mills) Conner.

There are many fond memories of Larry growing up. He talked about going fishing with his grandpa and spending time on the farm. Larry enjoyed motorcycles and old cars, especially Camaros. He also liked boating, John Deere tractors and lighthouses. Larry loved watching the “Pawn Stars,” home renovation shows and action movies. He collected oil paintings, always looking for that great deal at the Goodwill. But Larry’s true passion in life was his love for his family and spending time with them.

Survivors include daughters, Michele Conner of South Bend, Ind., Brooke (Lorne) Brownlee and Kayla Conner of La Porte, Ind.; sons, Mike Conner, John Conner and Cameron Conner of La Porte; brothers, Ron, Jack and Chris; sisters, Suzie and Gloria; grandchildren, Sarah, Nicholas, Westley, Marley, Mason, Austin, Emma, Brianna, Lennon and Harper; and great-grandchildren, Aiden, Alexia, Dreyden, Christian, Cason and Domnick.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jimmy and Kenny; and sister, Patricia.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23 at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, where a life celebration will be held at 2 p.m. Cremation will follow.

Eugene S. Newland, 1919-2020

Eugene S. Newland, 101, of La Crosse, Ind. passed away Sept. 18, 2020 at his home, surrounded by family.

He was born Jan. 11, 1919 in Hammond, Ind. to Byron G. and Rosa May (Johnson) Newland.

Eugene worked as a machinist at the Kingsbury Ordinance Plant, Allis Chalmers, and Screw Machine Products. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and he loved singing at church.

In 1937, he married Sophie Newland, who preceded him in death Sept. 22, 1981.  On June 5, 1982 in La Porte, Ind. he married Mary Newland, who also preceded him in death.

Survivors include children, Donald (Kathy) Newland of La Porte, Donna (Carney) Butler of La Crosse, and Charlotte (William) Miller of Blair, Wisc.; 19 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; 47 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by his parents; grandchildren, Dan Butler and Ruth Sternitzke; brothers, Orville and Garland Newland; and sister, Vivian Brettin.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, Sept. 21 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, where a celebration of life service will follow at noon with Pastor Randy Schrock officiating.  Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the La Crosse United Methodist Church, 11 N. Indiana Ave., La Crosse, Ind. 46348.

Rebecca Lynn Renfro, 1972-2020

Rebecca Lynn Renfro, 48, of La Porte, Ind. passed away unexpectedly at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, 2020 at La Porte Hospital.

She was born July 16, 1972 in La Porte to Jack Lee and Dorothy (Wood) Renfro.

Rebecca was a lifetime resident of La Porte and was employed at Dwyer Instruments, Michigan City.  Rebecca also bartended at Ringers and cashiered at The Bottle Shop for many years. She was a talented pool player and also loved to play darts. Rebecca was an animal lover and had a special connection with horses. She adored her two cats, Daisy and Jewel, and her two dogs, Sammy and Ace. In her younger years, she enjoyed roller skating at the local roller rink where she met many friends. Rebecca was good-hearted and helped anyone in need.  She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Survivors include her mother, Dorothy Renfro of La Porte; sister, Jackie (Dan) Michaels of La Porte; sister in-law, Rhonda Renfro of La Porte; nephews, Brian (Jamie) Rheinholtz of La Porte, Richard (Tahnee) Renfro of Union Mills, Ind., Christopher (Joslin) Renfro of San Diego, Cal. and Jack and Kenny Eslick of La Porte; nieces, Amy (Zach) Haas of La Porte, Erica (Joe) Lukac of La Porte, Wila (Chad) Harkins of Phoenix, Ariz., and Shantel O’bena of San Diego, Cal.; many great-nieces and great-nephews; and special friends, Leo and Lisa Ruiz of La Porte.

Preceding her in death were her dad, Jack Lee Renfro, and brother, Richard Renfro.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, 2020 at Lambs Chapel United Methodist Church, 6006 N. Fail Rd., La Porte, where a memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. with Pastor Jay Loucks officiating. Cremation will take place.
