Gwendalyn “Gwen” Alene Broviak, 1958-2020

Gwendalyn “Gwen” Alene Broviak, 62, of La Porte Ind. passed away peacefully at 9:49 a.m. Thursday, June 11, 2020 at La Porte Hospital.

She was born March 25, 1958 in La Porte to Buddy and Audrey (Holt) Berry.

Gwen was a registered nurse for 27 years, spending most of her career at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Michigan City. She loved to cook for her family and friends. Gwen also enjoyed gardening, her roses, and especially nursing her Dogwood tree.

Surviving are three children, Angela Neumann of Mishawaka, Ind., and Brandon Neumann and Tyler Broviak, both of La Porte; three sisters, Rose Bogart of La Porte, Belinda Siebe of Orlando, Fla., and Connie Westerlund of Portage, Ind.; and two grandchildren, Brandon and James.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, and two brothers.

A celebration of life memorial gathering will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 17 at the American Legion, 228 E. Lincolnway, La Porte.

Thomas P. Minich, 80, of La Porte, Ind. passed away Saturday, June 13, 2020.

He was born Dec. 15, 1939 in La Porte to Leo and Elizabeth (Wagner) Minich.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Tom retired as the head of maintenance with Boston Middle School, St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Joseph Catholic School.  Tom was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, hunting, landscaping and gardening.

Tom is survived by a sister, Sister Helen Minich of St. Francis Convent in Mishawaka, Ind.  He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Rosemary A. DeWolf, Mary Biegel, Virginia Biegel, Helen Wandell, Leonard Minich, Richard Minich, Robert Minich, and Andrew Minich.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 17 at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Ave., La Porte, Ind. where a rosary will be recited at 6:15 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 18 at St. Joseph Catholic Church; burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.  Family and friends may gather at 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Patricia Barnhart, 86, of Valparaiso, Ind. passed away Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at Brentwood Assisted Living, La Porte, Ind.

She was born Sept. 13, 1933 in La Porte to William Seidler and Mary Louise (Via) Seidler.

Pat was a member of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church of Valparaiso. She loved genealogy and was an avid collector of dolls.

On June 14, 1953 in La Porte she married Roger Barnhart.

Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Barnhart of Valparaiso and Julie (Jim) Burke of La Porte; granddaughter, Krystle; and great-grandchild, Landon.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother, David Seidler; and grandson, Jimmy.

Private interment will take place at St. John Lutheran Cemetery, La Porte with Pastor Foy officiating.

Gary Ray Dillard, 1949-2020

Gary Ray Dillard, 70, passed away Saturday, June 13, 2020 at his home.

He was born Nov. 29, 1949 in Pontiac, Mich. to Billy and Ramona (May) Dillard.

Gary married Linda Cooper Joseph.

He was a carpet installer and enjoyed taking long drives.  Gary dearly loved his family and friends.

Survivors include his children, Stephen (Victoria) Leonard of Mount Juliet, Tenn., Lori Leonard of Antioch, Tenn. and Shawn (Jennifer) Joseph of La Porte; seven grandchildren, Landon Leonard, Emma Leonard, Deven Deiotte, and Brecken, Anondi, Sumayah, and Remie Joseph; his mother, of La Porte; siblings, Betty (Dave) Durham of Kingsbury, Ind., Larry (Paula) Dillard of La Porte, Jack (Jennifer) Dillard of La Porte, and Billy (Diane) Dillard of Springville, Ind.; uncle, Michael May of Burlington, Wisc.; five nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, father, and daughter, Amy Joseph.

The family would like to sincerely thank Denise Morrison for her love, care and comfort provided to Gary and his family.

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.  Interment is planned at Kingsbury Cemetery at a later date.

James “Jim” A. Albertson, 50, of Rolling Prairie, Ind. passed away Friday, June 12, 2020.

He was born Dec. 4, 1969 in La Porte, Ind. to Robert and Patricia (Humphrey) Brewer.

Jim was a machinist.  He enjoyed fishing and being outdoors.  Most importantly, Jim loved his grandchildren.

Survivors include his sons, Daniel (Charlee) Albertson of La Porte and Justin (Segen) Albertson of Roswell, N.M.; his mother, of Westville, Ind.; six grandchildren, Hailey, Jayden and Layelle Albertson, Bailie Albertson, and Denice and Anabelle Hansen; significant other, Raeann Alexander of Rolling Prairie; step-children, Thereasa (Tito) Alexander and Brandon Alexander, all of Rolling Prairie; step-grandchildren, Taven Alexander, Alizay Martiniez and Joseph Zavala; sister, Bridget Vogel; brother-in-law, Brad Biege; 10 nieces and nephews, Adam Albertson, Zack Albertson, Samantha Albertson, Kyle Albertson, Brittany Albertson, Bradley Albertson, Erin Albertson, Brittany Vogel, Jake Vogel and Caleb Vogel; step-nephew, Colin Biege; and great-nieces and great-nephews, Coraline Beach, Eris Albertson, Luna Albertson, Olivia Albertson, Kyndall Albertson, Kase Albertson, Baylee Mintchell, and Mya Stark.

Jim was preceded in death by his father; brothers, Robert Albertson, Jr. and Paul Albertson; step-father, Jim Brewer; grandfathers, George Humphrey and Charles Albertson; and grandmothers, Colleen Humphrey and Betty Albertson.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, June 18 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.

Cremation has taken place.

George Edward Lasky, 80, of La Porte, Ind. passed away Sunday, June 14, 2020 at Porter Regional Hospital.

George was born July 30, 1939 in Little Falls, Minn. to Walter H. and Mary K. (Matis) Lasky.

On Dec. 27, 1974 in La Porte, Ind. he married Phyllis (Hunt) Wright.

George was a store manager for many years and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.  George enjoyed watching sports, including Cubs baseball and La Porte High School football, baseball and basketball.

Survivors include his nine children, Robbie (Cindy) Lasky of Jacksonville, Fla., Scott Lasky of Texas, Shauna (Jack) Sandig of Texas, Sheryl (Ricky) Turner of Nenana, Ark., Teri (Rick) Strieter of Rolling Prairie, Ind.; Su (Douglas) Glesner of La Porte, Toni (Fred Moryl) Lenard of La Porte, Richard “Rick” Wright of La Porte, and Dale (Karen) Wright of Orlando, FL; 21 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one  great-great-grandchild; sister, JoAnne Thompson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife on March 10, 2019; and twin brother, Jerry Lasky.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 21 and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Monday, June 22 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, after which attendees will proceed to Saint Joseph Catholic Church for a 10 a.m. mass of Christian burial.

Cremation will take place.

She was born May 13, 1948 in La Porte to Kenneth and Alberta (Hillman) Bradley.

Survivors include a cousin, Steven Nation of Indianapolis, Ind. and friend, Lynn Lisarelli of La Porte.

Helen served in the United States Army.

Michael A. Biege, 33, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2020 at Porter Regional Hospital.

Michael was born Jan. 6, 1987 in Batesville, Ark. to Peggy L. (Biege) Albertson.

Surviving are his children, Sarah and Haley; brother, Cody Bean of South Bend, Ind.; many aunts, uncles, cousins; and loving family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother; brother, Brandon Biege; and his grandparents.

Cremation has taken place. A private family service will take place at a later date.

John George Vapensky, 1936-2020

John George Vapensky, 83, died June 15, 2020 in Chicago, Ill.

Born Dec. 21, 1936, John was a proud resident of LaPorte for over 40 years.  He was a long-time parishioner of Sacred Heart Church, where he served as an usher for much of that time. He was also very dedicated to the church’s fundraising by running various booths at the Polish Fest for many years.  He was also a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus.

John worked at Bethlehem Steel as a chemical lab foreman for 33 years before retiring. After that, he loved traveling to Chicago to see his kids and grandkids, proudly touting his “secret route,” Highway 41, to anyone who would listen … hilariously rendering it a non-secret. He had a great sense of humor.

He was also a lover of anything sports.  He was especially fond of the Baltimore Orioles, the Indianapolis Colts, everything Notre Dame and, of course, the Cubs. He was thrilled to see them finally clinch a World Series championship.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Joan.  Survivors include his daughter, Nikki Marvel (Scott); his son, John (Aimee LeBlanc); and three grandchildren, Alex Vapensky, Mia Marvel, and Molly Vapensky.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 23 at Pine Lake Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Robert M. Adams, 1946-2020

Robert M. Adams, 73, of La Porte, Ind. passed away Sunday, June 21, 2020.

He was born July 18, 1946 in Rensselaer, Ind. to William Maurice “Mauri” Adams and Ethel Pauline (Warren).

Bob was the owner of Kendall’s Service, which he purchased in 1997 before selling the business to Kaiser Auto in 2013. He served in the Army Reserve and was a member of the American Legion. He served on the La Porte County Lake Patrol and was an advisor for the La Porte County Police Cadets.

On Sept. 18, 1965 Bob married Christine Wilkey, who survives. Also surviving are their children, Paul (Kristie) Adams of La Porte and Karen Parkerson of La Porte; grandchildren, Jake (Sarah) Adams, Heather Macher, Zachary (Sarah) Adams, Kayla (Shawn) Miller, Lexie Adams, Taylor Adams, Bryon (Amanda) Parkerson, and Jessica (Josh) Fawley; 11 great-grandchildren; and brothers, William (Chris) Adams and Michael (Patty) Adams of La Porte.

He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Jeff Parkerson.

Bob was a loving son, husband, dad and grandpa “paw-paw.” He will be truly missed by all those lives he touched.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 25 and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, June 26 at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Ave., La Porte, Indiana, where funeral services will be held with Pastor Bob Vale officiating. Burial will follow at Rolling Prairie Cemetery.

William “Bill” Neil Unger, Jr., 75, of La Porte, Ind. passed away Saturday, June 20, 2020.

He was born July 3, 1944 in La Porte to William and Billie Lorraine (Ott) Unger, Sr. He retired from La Porte High School’s maintenance and mechanical department after many years of service. He had also been employed with Allis-Chalmers, Wirecraft and Plimpton Press. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and was a member of the V.F.W. Post 1130 in La Porte.

Survivors include a sister, Rebecca L. (Robert) Werner of Union Mills, Ind. and a brother, Robert G. (Pearl) Unger of Mooresville, Ind.

A sister, Patricia Unger, preceded him in death.

Dyllen John Hoffer, 36, of New Carlisle, Ind. died unexpectedly Sunday, June 21, 2020 in New Carlisle, Ind.

He was born Feb. 9, 1984 in Elkhart, Ind. and moved to the New Carlisle area at a young age.

Dyllen loved his music, with Nirvana being his favorite group. He enjoyed cooking and gardening, and was an avid reader. He loved spending time with his family.

Survivors include his grandmother, Donna Brown of New Carlisle; father, Michael Hoffer of Florida; great-grandmother, Jeanne E. Hatten; aunt, Mary L. Mills; uncle, Rodney R. Hoffer; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Dyllen was preceded in death by his grandfather, Richard L. Hoffer and great-grandfather, John A. Hoffer.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 28 at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, Ind.; cremation will take place afterwards. Inurnment will be in Hamilton Church Cemetery in Hamilton, Ind.

Ronald Craig Cowser, 52, of Walkerton, Ind. passed away Sunday, June 21, 2020 in Walkerton.

He was born May 10, 1968 in Hammond, Ind. to Donald and Sharon (Mullen) Cowser.

After living in Arizona for a few years, Ronald returned to the area in 2000. He was a welder by trade who worked in the construction industry for many years. Ronald enjoyed fishing and mushroom hunting, loved music, especially classic rock, and loved spending time with his family and friends. Although not a member, he enjoyed hanging out at the Fish Lake American Legion. Ronald owned a “gentleman’s farm,” where he gardened and kept chickens and turkeys. He just loved to be outside and explore nature. A kindly soul, he loved kids and always put others first.

Ronald was preceded in death by his wife, Cassandra and his father, Donald.

Survivors include his loving mother, Sharon; a brother, Jeffrey Cowser of Homewood, Ill.; and an aunt, Beverly Sharo of Lansing, Ill.

A celebration of life service will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 1 at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 602 Maple Ave, La Porte, Ind. 46350 with Pastor Bob Vale officiating. Cremation has taken place.  The funeral home respectfully requests that those who attend wear a mask or face covering and abide by the CDC guidelines for six-foot distancing and hand washing.

Judith “Judi” Susan Kingsolver, 59, of Kingsford Heights, Ind. passed away Friday, June 19, 2020 at La Porte Hospital and Health Services.

She was born Dec. 9, 1960 in La Porte, Ind. to Lowell and E. Delores Kay (Turner) Kingsolver.

Judi was a member of the American Legion.  She enjoyed baking, cooking, fishing, gardening, soaking up the sun, any outdoor activities, spending time with her grandchildren, and taking care of those around her.

Survivors include her children, Dee Dee Kingsolver of Mount Washington, Ky., Anthony “Tony” Kingsolver of Atlanta, Ga., Robert Hawkins of Michigan City, Ind. and Cheyenne Wheeler of Koontz Lake, Ind.; grandchildren, Erica, Camden, Skylar, and Chloe; sister, Jodie Kingsolver of Phoenix, Az.; and longtime companion, Patrick “Pat” Hux of Kingsford Heights.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 28 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, where a celebration of life memorial service will follow at 4 p.m. with Pastor Bob Vale officiating. Cremation has taken place.

The family respectfully asks that masks be worn and that other CDC guidelines be followed at the visitation and service.

Michael Lee Klement, 1946-2020

Michael Lee Klement, 73, of La Porte, Ind. passed away peacefully at 8:20 a.m. Monday, June 22, 2020 at his home.

He was born Oct. 7, 1946 in La Porte to Joseph and Wilma (Zook) Klement.

Michael loved classic country western music, The Gaithers and Lawrence Welk. He was also a daily home contestant of “Let’s Make a Deal” and “The Price is Right.” He loved all animals. Friends and family would send him pictures of farm animals and newborns for him to enjoy. Michael loved visiting zoos and was a zoo parent to animals in zoos across the USA. Michael lived a simple life, being a happy fellow with a happy disposition.

Survivors include his two siblings, Sharon and Greg (Mary Jo) Klement; niece and nephew, Allison and Joe Klement; and adopted sister, Sandy Drnek, all of La Porte.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

Cremation will take place. There will be no service.

Karen Lynn Toll, 1957-2020

Karen Lynn Toll, 63, of Knox, Ind. passed away peacefully at 8:40 a.m. Tuesday, June 16, 2020 at her home surrounded by loved ones, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She was born June 14, 1957 in Mobile, Ala. to Harlan McMann Jones and Kathleen Virginia (Brownlee) Jones.

On July 30, 2005 in Grovertown, Ind. she married the love of her life, Richard Allen Toll.

Karen enjoyed time with her family and friends, and recently celebrated 24 years of sobriety, during which she was a savior to many. She possessed a wonderful spirit, faithful energy and an amazing forgiveness.

Survivors include her husband; her father, Harlan “Cap” Jones; sisters, Crystal (Chuck) Gross and D’Avona Richardson; sister-in-law, Carolyn (James) Mosier; grandchildren, Kayla (Tavion) Hurley, Bryon (Taylor) Whitaker and Bilinda (Jojo) Hurley; four great-grandsons; two great-granddaughters; and many nieces, nephews and other loved ones.

Karen’s grandchildren were one of the joys of her life.

Preceding her in death were her mother, Kathleen Jones; son, Vernon R. Hurley Jr.; and father and mother-in-law, Richard Neal Toll and Josephine Toll.

Dominic B. Laneve, 22, of Kingsford Heights, Ind. passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at Memorial Hospital, South Bend, Ind.

Dominic was born Sept. 24, 1997 in Valparaiso, Ind. to Dave Laneve and Stacy (Battleday) Moore.

On Dec. 30, 2018 in Kingsbury, Ind. he married Alexandrea Eberhart.

Dominic was a general laborer.  He loved his guns and his truck.  Dominic enjoyed spending time with his beloved dog but, most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his daughter.

Survivors include his wife; his daughter, Caterina; mother, Stacy (William) Moore of La Porte; sisters, Stephanie (Tyler) Searing of Kingsford Heights, Deanne Laneve of La Porte, Simone (Dylan Seeley) Laneve of La Porte, Delanie Laneve of La Porte, and Ashley Moore of Mishawaka, Ind.; brother, Cory Moore of La Porte; grandmother, Lea Ann (Charlie) Battleday of Valparaiso; father-in-law, Eric (Dorothy) Eberhart; mother-in-law, Sylvia Eberhart; sister-in-law, Juliana Wolozanski; three nieces; one nephew; his beloved dog, Mary “MarBear”; and many other loving family and friends.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, July 3 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, where a celebration of life service will be held at 6 p.m.

Cremation has taken place.

Kelly J. Snyder, 59, of Rolling Prairie, Ind. passed away unexpectedly Thursday, June 25, 2020 at her home.

She was born Sept. 27, 1960 in La Porte, Ind. to Leland and Shirley (Gierkey) Snyder.

Kelly graduated from La Porte High School in 1978.  She was a bookkeeper at La Porte Tool Supply for many years.  She enjoyed cooking, tending to her flowers, and participating in her bowling league.  Most importantly, Kelly enjoyed the 44 years she spent with the love of her life, Nick Principe, of Rolling Prairie, who survives.

Also surviving are her siblings, Kyle Graber of Fountain Hills, Az., Kary (Bob) Henning of South Bend, Ind., Kathy James of La Porte, and Christopher (Angie) Foster of Hobbs, N.M.; special niece, Ashley Downen of La Porte; as well as her beloved cockapoo, Alli, and her cat, Forrest.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Howard and Ruth Snyder, and beloved cockapoo, Lady.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held at a later date.

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the La Porte County Small Animal Shelter, 2855 West State Rd. 2, La Porte, Ind.
