Charles “Charlie” Boston, 1927-2015

charlie Boston obit photoCharles “Charlie” Boston, 87, died at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, at his home in LaPorte.

He was born Oct. 17, 1927, in Edinburgh, IN, to Paul and Mamie (Asperger) Boston and had been a resident of LaPorte for over 60 years.

Charlie graduated from LaPorte High School in 1945 and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1949 from DePauw University, where he was a Phi Kappa Psi. He also received a Masters in Business Administration degree from Indiana University in 1950 and was a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter. Charlie was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean Conflict.

Charlie was a proud LaPortean and very active in the LaPorte community. He was a partner in the insurance agency Hargrave, Hargrave and Boston (now General Insurance). Over the years, he had instrumental roles in the Jaycees, Kiwanis Club, LaPorte Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, LaPorte Salvation Army, LaPorte Hospital Board, and Meals on Wheels. He was also a longstanding member of the LaPorte Presbyterian Church. Charlie was known for his sense of humor and quick wit, and along with his wife he traveled around the world and made friends wherever he went.

On June 25, 1950, he married Gharyl “Geree” Frye, who preceded him in death in July 2011.

Charlie is survived by his daughters, Tamara (Stephen) Anderson of Apex, NC, and Martha (Dragan) Boston-Majetic of Oberursel, Germany; five grandchildren, James (Jane) Anderson, Lauren (Christopher) Steffen, Meredith Anderson, and Katarina and Peter Majetic; and one great-grandchild, Finley Steffen.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Katheryn Boston Bartlett.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held Sunday, Jan. 18, at 3 p.m. at the LaPorte Presbyterian Church. The family will be receiving friends from 2 p.m. until the service. Interment will take place in the LaPorte Presbyterian Church Columbarium. Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the LaPorte Presbyterian Church, 307 Kingsbury Ave., LaPorte, IN 46350; LaPorte YMCA, 901 Michigan Ave., LaPorte, IN 46350; and LaPorte Salvation Army, 3240 Monroe St., LaPorte, IN 46350.
