Roy McGinty, 1952-2013

Roy McGinty 001Roy Wayne McGinty, 61, of LaPorte, died peacefully at 7:17 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at IU Health LaPorte Hospital.

He was born May 2, 1952, in Dyess, Arkansas, to Frank and Erma (Jenkins) McGinty.

Roy loved his church family. He was a member of Praise Tabernacle of LaPorte. In Roy’s earlier years, he was an active participant in local drama programs. He was a poet who wrote many poems, loved music and was a talented guitar player. In his spare time he enjoyed crossword puzzles and spending time in his garage, which he called his “man cave,” with his extensive collection of tools. Roy was a lifelong baseball fan, especially of the Detroit Tigers. He worked as a correctional officer for 38 years at the Indiana State Prison. Roy loved to work and was very proud of his attendance record. He was invited to the Governor’s Long Term Employee Reception, where he received an award for 35 years of service by Gov. Mitch Daniels. Roy will be greatly missed by all of his friends and family.

On April 8, 1998, in LaPorte, he married Linda (Koth) McGinty, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Douglas McGinty of Michigan City, IN; one stepdaughter, Shelley McGinty of LaPorte; two stepsons, Daniel (Renee) McGinty of East Moline, IL, and Jonathan (Carrie) McGinty of Michigan City; nine grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

His parents and brother, Don McGinty, preceded him in death.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20, at Praise Tabernacle Church, 1901 Ohio St. (off of Boyd Blvd.), LaPorte, with Pastor Barry Brown officiating. Visitation will be at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, on Friday, July 19, from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 1 p.m. until service time. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte, immediately following services.
