William “Bill” Edward Burkhart, 75, of LaPorte, died Thursday, May 15, 2014, at IU Health University Hospital, Indianapolis.
He was born Oct. 5, 1938, in Logansport, IN, to James Gilbert and Bernice Evelyn (Laymon) Burkhart.
William was a retired laborer, having worked for Modine Manufacturing in LaPorte for 39 years. He was a member of the LaPorte Lions Club and was coordinator of its Lions Alert Program. He was involved with Meals on Wheels and was an active member of First United Methodist Church. William was a veteran of the Marine Corps and Air Force. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed nature.
On April 18, 1959, he married Sandra Straub, who survives.
Also surviving are his beloved children, David Burkhart of Indianapolis, Teri Burkhart of LaPorte and Kevin (Linda) Burkhart of Indianapolis; two grandsons, Zachary and Ethan Burkhart of Indianapolis; and brother, Tom Burkhart, and sister, Sharon (Sonny) Green, both of LaPorte.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jim Burkhart.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 19, at First United Methodist Church, LaPorte, with Rev. Evan Lash officiating. Visitation will be at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, on Sunday, May 18, from 4 to 8 p.m., and at the church on Monday from 9 a.m. until the service. Interment will follow the service at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte, with full military honors.
