On Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021, Michael “Mike” Howell passed away peacefully at the age of 72.
Mike was born Oct. 9, 1948, in Mill Creek, Ind., to Lloyd and Ruth Howell.
Growing up, Mike worked on his parents’ farmland. He eventually began his career as a heavy-equipment mechanic with Dye Plumbing and Heating and Midwest Operating Union.
Asked what they would remember most about Mike, there was a common response among his family members: his deep love for everyone, his big smile, and the bigger hugs he offered his children and grandchildren. The family shares fond memories of his love for coaching his sons’ baseball teams as they all grew up, and his involvement with 4-H, teaching classes on small engines. Those who knew Mike know he hated being fussed over and preferred to avoid being the center of attention.
Surviving are his sister, Kathy (Greg) Trevillian; sons, Jeremy (Jamie), Nick (Lindsey) and Josh (Allison); four grandchildren, Gabe, Nolan, Addison and Kaley; nieces, Stephanie (Eric) Hoffman and Cari (Greg) Whittler; and a close-knit extended family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. It was in moments where Mike was surrounded by family that he was his happiest, and the list of people who loved him is a mile long.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents.
A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, Aug. 1, at 1 p.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery on CR-600E in La Porte County.
To honor Mike’s memory, please consider a donation in his name to La Porte County 4-H Council, by mail or drop off in person: 2857 W. Ind. 2, Suite A, La Porte, Ind. 46350.
The family sends its sincere thanks for your condolences and for honoring Mike in your memory. We will hold him close in our hearts forever.
