Krista Smith MacLennan, 53, a lifelong resident of La Porte, Ind., passed away Wednesday, April 7, 2021.
She was born Dec. 26, 1967, in La Porte to Mayor Dennis F. and Sylvia M. (Meltinos) Smith.
Krista graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor’s degree in 1990 and from Notre Dame Law School in 1994. She practiced law in La Porte and worked for many years for the La Porte Circuit Court as director of Juvenile Court Services. In recent years she worked as a grant writer for the Sisters of the Holy Cross, and as volunteer coordinator for the Center for Hospice. Krista was always active with her kids, helping out at schools, working in the concession stands and cheering from the sidelines.
On Feb. 29, 1992, Krista married Thomas P. MacLennan, Jr., who survives along with two sons, Joseph MacLennan of Indianapolis, Ind., and John MacLennan of La Porte; her mother, Sylvia Smith of Dunedin, Fla., and her brother, David (Jamie) Smith of Fort Wayne, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her father, Mayor Dennis F. Smith.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 11, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, La Porte. A Parish Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, April 12, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, La Porte, with Rev. Ian Williams officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, La Porte. Family and friends may gather at 9 a.m. Monday in the funeral home.
