Harry Smith Berry, 1940-2021

Harry Smith Berry, 80, of La Porte, Ind., passed away Saturday, April 3, 2021, at his home with his wife and family by his side.

He was born in Valparaiso, Ind., on May 20, 1940, to Jack Berry.

Harry proudly served in the U.S. Air Force from March 1960 to November 1963. He earned the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award in 1962 and the Good Conduct Medal in 1963. Harry was a counselor for 26 years at the Indiana State Prison. He was a member of First Church of God. He enjoyed cars and woodworking. For every family graduation and wedding, he would make a special wooden card box for each child or couple. His special, handcrafted gifts have left precious memories for his family.

On Aug. 31, 1991, in La Porte, he married Julie Wilhelm, who survives.

Also surviving are his children, Scott Daily of La Porte, Brandi (Rich) Reinke of La Porte, Kurt (Kristen) Ulrich of La Porte and Stephani (CJ) Bealor of La Porte; 7 grandchildren, Kyle, Klayton and Reese Reinke, Taven and Tannen Ulrich, and Kiaya and Elora Bealor; best and most faithful companion, his little dog, Dottie; beloved dog, Big Boy Dunkin; special cat, Ms. Piggy; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jack Berry.

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service with Full Military Honors will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 17, at First Church of God, La Porte, with Pastor Jeff Zigler officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the service Saturday at the church. Anyone attending the visitation and/or service is required to wear a mask.
