Fern Eddy Schultz, 1928-2021

Fern A. Eddy Schultz, 92, of La Porte, Ind., passed away Thursday, March 11, 2021, at home with her daughter, Lannette, at her side.

She was born Dec. 2, 1928, in La Porte, the daughter of Charles Leroy and Cora Sarah (Stewig) Eddy.

A lifelong resident of the area, Fern was a beloved and well-respected member of the community, serving as the official La Porte County Historian for decades. She worked for the state employment service until her retirement. Fern was past president and charter member of the La Porte County Genealogical Society, member of the Indiana Historical Society, past president of the La Porte County Historical Society, member of the VFW Auxiliary, and a La Porte Rose Rebekah for years.  She was former president of the Pine Lake Cemetery Association and was instrumental in the restoration of the Eason Chapel there. Fern was the leading authority on the Kingsbury Ordnance Plant, the editor of the Historical Society newsletter, and authored the book, “La Porte County and Its Environs.” In addition, she sang and played accordion and piano along with her talented musical family. 

In Michigan, Fern married Kenneth E Schultz, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her two brothers, Charles Eddy, Jr., and Robert William Eddy. 

Fern is survived by her loving daughter, Lannette Crutchfield of La Porte.

A memorial celebration will be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place. Her burial will take place at Pine Lake Cemetery, La Porte. Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, La Porte, is handling arrangements.
