Jerry Mills, 59, of La Porte, Ind. passed away Sunday, Oct. 4, 2020.
He was born Aug. 16, 1961 in La Porte to Richard and Mary (Watson) Mills. He married Rebecca L. Hammonds on May 22, 1982.
Jerry was retired from Dye Mechanical, where he was a heavy-duty diesel mechanic for 20 years. He was a former member of Kingsford Union Volunteer Fire Department. He belonged to the Moose Lodge and Senior Bowling League. He enjoyed volunteering at La Porte Hospital and he also coached baseball and basketball for many years, when his children were younger.
Jerry was a die-hard Notre Dame, Chicago Bears and Cubs fan. He enjoyed going to NASCAR races and playing cards with his family. He was an avid car lover, and he loved working on, and driving, different cars.
Jerry’s greatest passion was his family. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was his family’s biggest supporter and he made sure he was as involved in their lives as much as possible. He had the biggest heart and was willing to help anyone who needed it.
Survivors include his wife; children, Nicholas (Natalie) Mills, Nathan Mills, and Heather (Jeremy) Voorhees, all of La Porte; grandchildren, Jamison Mills, Levi Mills, Avelyn Mills, Henry Mills, Harrison Mills, Charlie Mills, Kaiden Voorhees, Colten Voorhees, and Montserrat Salinas-Voorhees; sisters Mariann Williams, Karen Nieto, and Lorrie Mills, all of Tucson, Ariz.; and brothers, Michael Mills of Michigan City, Ind. and John (Teri) Mills of La Porte.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Richard “Dickie” Mills.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14 at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Ave., La Porte, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City.
