Jo (Josephine) Herbst, 1942-2020

Jo (Josephine) Herbst of Lisbon, N.D. passed away in rural Walcott, N.D. May 12, 2020 under the care of hospice while surrounded by family.

Jo was born May 26, 1942, in La Porte, Ind. to Joseph and Ceycelia (Ellenwine) Miller and was raised in Rolling Prairie, Ind. She graduated from Rolling Prairie High School in 1960.

On July 16, 1960 in La Porte she married Donald Wayne Herbst. She was employed by Spiegel’s catalog store and Rolling Prairie Elementary School. The couple lived in Rolling Prairie until April of 1976 when they moved to Lisbon with their family.

While in Lisbon Jo worked many years at the Sears catalog stores. Her love of crafting and painting led her to start a business, “The Cellar Door,” with her husband; they worked out of their home for many years and they travelled to many craft shows and visited nearby casinos. That led into owning and operating Talents & Treasures with Joann Saxerud in Lisbon for five years. Jo finished her working career in the deli section at Remily’s Supermarket.

Jo was a member of the St. Aloysius Catholic Church.

Jo is survived by her five children, Deyon (Jim) Suchla, of Leonard; Alanna (Dan) Schmidtke, of Devils Lake, N.D.; Kara (Jen) Meslow, of Walcott N.D.; Kathleen Groettum and Donnie Herbst, both of Lisbon;  12 grandchildren, Lindsay (Dustin) Morro, Jade and Nate Suchla, Jordon (Jake) Elbert, Dani Schmidtke, Michael (Ronni) Carter, Kelsey (Tom) Lund, Aavyn Meslow, Kortney (Tim) Vesel, Kendall Groettum, Kasey Groettum and Karli Groettum; 13 great-grandchildren, Zane, Issac, Zoe, Cody, Aly, Bristol, Carter, Russell, Davis, Ivan, Ian, Isabella, Austin, Taylor, Shelby, and Payton; sister, Jane (John) Slater, LaPorte; and brother Dave (Sherri) Miller, Valparaiso, Ind.

Jo was preceded in death by her husband; parents; mother- and father-in-law, August and Jesse (Smith) Herbst; brother, Michael J. Miller, daughter-in-law, Kari Herbst; and granddaughter, Donna Lee Gilbertson.

Private services will be held Saturday, May 16 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Lisbon, N.D. Internment will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Lisbon.

Armstrong Funeral Home of Lisbon is handling the arrangements.
