Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, LaPorte, is handling the arrangements for Bernice Scherer, 97, of LaPorte, Indiana, who passed away Friday, July 13, 2018.
Bernice was born June 3, 1921 ,in Eastern, Kentucky, to Milford and Cassie (Warrens) Russell.
On June 26, 1948, she married Gilbert E. Scherer, who preceded her in death on Nov. 8, 2011.
Bernice retired from Kingsley Furniture in LaPorte, where she was an expediter for 15 years. She had previously worked at Schaffer’s Laundry and Allis-Chalmers. Bernice was lifetime member of LaPorte VFW Auxiliary and she enjoyed raising roses, gardening, and cooking. She was raised by her maternal grandparents. She attended Grace Baptist Church in LaPorte.
Bernice leaves behind a daughter, Brenda (Roy) Verlinde of Farmington Hills, Michigan; a son, George (Cathie) Scherer of Rolling Prairie, Indiana; three grandchildren, Jason (Linda) Verlinde, Sara (James) Bennett and Jacob (Rayna) Scherer; seven great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Colin, Lillian, Christopher, Elizabeth, Victoria and Anthony; a brother, Franklin (Harlene) Turner of Brighton, Michigan; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gilbert; three brothers, James and Paul Russell and Tennyson Turner; and a sister, Rosalee Jacobs.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 20, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, LaPorte. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 21, at the funeral home, where family and friends may visit one hour prior. Pastor Kim Landrum will officiate. Burial will follow in Tracy Cemetery.
